We’ve done a couple artists on this show now where we link the music of an artist back to their image. I think it’s crucial to look at the bigger picture when analyzing a musician because understanding where someone is coming from will often give you important clues about their reasoning behind certain musical choices... - Hudba
Noah "40" Shebib (Drake's engineer and producer) did an interview on Pensado's Place and said Drake has the worst timing ever, "he can't even tap out eighth note hi-hats, let alone triplets." But Drake told him "I don't hear the beats, I hear the spaces in between the beats" which is something I thought would be interesting to add to your breakdown of how he skips the downbeats.

🤔
This was 40's interview with Dave Pensado on Pensado's place. By far one of the funniest Batter's Box segments ever.
Ethan Williams a link to this?

yup, i found that interesting. you can tell that by the way he raps too.
This is a mind-blowingly deep analysis

Don't stop these kind of videos until you run out of ideas. Dope.
"The less you say, the more you sing" Thank you so much for putting that into words and within this context! It helps to have it framed even if your intention is to say more. Always good to have a clear idea of what you're going for!
This is great f*cking content. Very impressed. I’d love to do something with you on my channel someday.

Blacky! Let's have a discussion about this
Roddy Ricch 😂
Last night I was genuinely thinking about how Drakes music is so lofi and his voice takes over the music, in a thin but controlled way, and kind of leads you into his world. You analysed everything and more the exact same, amazing !

The day I understand wtf you’re saying in this video is the day I’ll know I’ve grown as an artist LMAO
@@SkiSavesLives haha
It's mostly nonsense. Like looking at a painting and then filming a video expressing what you perceived the artist meant. The only thing accurate was the #hashtag ... The one thing EVERYONE already knows 😆😆
@@rathesungod4 no his focal point are actually quite technical, from keeping the cadence of your vocals separate fromd the cadence of the beat to give a "Floaty realistic feel" to being creative with spacing in every sense, from melodically to lyrically to metaphorically. and the making and maintaining an iconic subculture is essential if you want a long lasting and evolving fan base

@Pay...
Ur clueless bro.
Dude worships Lucifer clear as day...he puts it right in your face and puts it in his music too of course.
You can’t hear the “6 6 6”... at the end if some of his songs?
You can’t see that OVO is just an amateur way of ‘hiding’ the Minerva Owl (a demon) that he worships?
This isn’t that hard to see bro.
Unless you just don’t want too.
This is singlehandedly one of the most important videos to watch, analyze and study continuously over time if you’re an aspiring artist. Hella gems! 🖤💯
I'm still waiting for Frank Ocean... 😩
What About Lana Del Rey
he's gone.... hes never coming back

Rap Genius made a video on Frank Ocean's music, and how he uses certain lyrics to "brand" himself, like mentioned on the Ed Sheeran video on this page. Hope that helps.

I can almost guarantee that Drake isn’t this scientific about his craft. He probably just does it 🤣

It really shows man! you got a instant subscribe from me lol. Luv from London :)
YES! I’ve been waiting for more videos in this series!
Friedemann! I'm so happy to see the artist melody series again! I confess I didn't think much of Drake's music but your analysis is incredible! Hope the series continues flying high! Hire me!
Amazing, this is such a good video. As a huge Drizzy fan and as a music producer listening to his songs differently now
ay man you're really smart and I really appreciate all the time you put into making these super valuable and informative videos, theres so much to learn from them and you did all the hardest parts for us. so thankyou. I just want to say though since ik you arent american and idk how big of a hiphop guy you are, that what you called "hashtag rap" in this video wasnt popularized by drake but actually was popularized lil wayne. it had been a style since the 80s but lil wayne being such a megastar in the 2000s hes the one who really made it the popular style of rap I became. lil wayne is actually one of the most influential rappers ever and as of today in sure hes influenced 90% of all rappers between like 15 & 25yo. you impeccable research and study though, it's actually quite amazing. thanks again for the awesome video. love from wisconsin, - D 🤘🏻
IM SO HAPPY I DISCOVERED THIS VIDEO ON THE DAY IT WAS RELEASED.
Your videos are so thorough and inspiring, thank you for everything and keep up the great work.
Awesome video, Drake's flow is incredible and so many people don't realize the subtlety of it. Seriously, try to rap one of his songs like him, his delivery is super precise. Also, The Six comes from the six boroughs that formed Toronto; Etobicoke, North York, York, Scarborough, East York, and Toronto.
I bet you know Drake's techniques better than he does. These 'trademark skills' you've highlighted are most probably not deliberate.
Taiwo Asiwaju exactly, I feel like videos like this are cool to watch but the artist does this naturally and not intentionally
I completely believe Drake does all of this naturally and not intentionally but trust me producers and managers know their shit and know exactly what they want and need. Definately intentional, not from Drake directly though.
Yeah, that’s called having your own sound
This is the most ridiculous comment ever to think that an artist as established as he is is just winging it get out of here
definitely not consciously deliberate but 100% subconsciously. who sits there breaking down the nuances of every action they make lol we all just act and what's within us comes out.
Everything about this video is amazing. Keep up the good work, the views will be in the millions soon.
Absolutely brilliant!! One of the best CZcams videos connected to music I’ve watched in a longtime, well executed 🏆💯🙌🏾😎
Please man, we need Frank

Whoooo its baaack!
How about the killers, I know somebody else has to like them.
D'Juann Mar-Que I never of the killers
I love the great deconstruction of the artist but also the way you throw in super inspiring messages at the end.
Thank you for your job! Really huge volume of specific information. Great acquisition for today!
just amazing!! thanks for showing us the bigger picture!!! thats valuable information what you have just posted
This video has been showing up in my recommended for a while. So I felt like I should just watch it. I'm a rapper myself this was very insightful. Thanks youtube.
Ive been waiting for this one thank you
This probably my 5 time watching and as a artist I learn more and more... or at least finally coming to the recognition of majority of the points
"Unifying principle of 2+2"=4-1=3 that's quick maths
Evri dai man's on teh bluk..... Smok treéś!
As a writer, there are certain elements to his breakdown that are purely assumption. As in, assuming these things are done purposefully. It's just a Drake's style. If you let 20 rappers listen to the same beat, you'll have 20 different songs afterwards. Sure, there are a lot of copycat rappers out here (Drake included) but when writing naturally, everyone should vibe with certain elements of the beat and the flow should mimic that. The part about the "breath" that can easily be edited out by the engineer.
90% of this is assumption. 0% of "how drake writes melodies" 😂.
I just love your videos, man. I currently study songwriting at Berklee College of Music, and most of the times your videos go so much deeper than anything i see inside the classroom!!
Thank you so much for this comment - I made this video for people like you!
He leaves the beat to breath . giving the instruments to pop out with confidence
It's called the 6 because of the 416 area code but also because Toronto is an amalgamation of 6 different smaller cities/neighborhoods.
Yup. Six burroughs in Toronto. Hence, the "6".
That shit a disrespect to the ORIGINAL 6 in the A
6 was his childhood address
You should do a video about XXXTentacion since his is style is so erratic it would be extremely interesting.
You once said you made videos for above beginner levels for quality control, like that was a year ago... now after learning basic music theory I get a lot of value from it
I'm amazed with how much you can cram in one video! Thanks for showing us all these different styles!
Daft Punk would be an interesting one
Yup!
YEA
Actually, we call Toronto "The 6" in reference to the 6 boroughs that make up the city. North York, East York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, York, and Old Toronto.
Loved this vid! I appreciate the effort you put in, def reading your book!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼⚡️
I didn’t realize this was all so technical. Great video!
The crazy part is he probably doesnt plan any of this stuff he just gets on and sings the music lmfaooo.
That’s why he’s a legend
😂😂 I think it’s just the sound he developed over the years, it’s talent and work. Anyone can work for it
You don't think he knows about frequency, flow, emotion... I disagree completely. Look at the change in his music
@HipHopNewz 40?
Toronto has 2 area codes and they both have 6 in them.
this channel should have best/most quality award
The amount of work u put in here is really appreciated , best CZcamsr for sure 🔥
Hashtag rap is really the "Supa Dupa Flow" Big Sean started that.
Rize X Lol, Big Sean did not start that.
Joe Sonner yes he did drake even said he got the flow from Sean

Ramon Silva good point
Rize X no he didn't start that I did he stole it from me
Your videos are just amazing.
Can you make some more content about the weeknd because i am really really interested in his music.
This is incredible; your channel and Lost in Vegas (They breakdown lyrics to songs) deserve al the fans you get!
thank you for this. the last section about branding/ building a sub-culture was powerful.

At 9:41, Drake admits to having been inspired by Big Sean for the "hashtag" flow.
Dude... you’re awesome for real for real.
I've read your book and watch your vids, you've changed the way I analyse music
I always knew Drake had something special. He's not one of my favorite rappers personally but Drake was a lot more innovative and fresher than people give him credit for. His smooth and somewhat unorthodox flow with those #hashtag lines undoubtedly influenced a new generation of rappers. #Yolo
he just copied the weeknd
Hashtag rapping was popular when Drake was in a wheelchair

"He's real & honest???" 🤔
Let's pause on that.
Your shirt is amazing. Your video, too, but your shirt, though!
As a fellow German I never heard Drake's music on mainstream radio. Hotline Bling is the only song I've ever heard of before because it got meme'd to death.
Ugh... that song's awful too. "One Dance" and "Too Good" are much better.
This was one of the most informative, helpful videos I have had the pleasure of watching - incredible job.
Love that you're back mate! And trust me, I am rarely active in the CZcams comment section
Glad to hear it Mikael, thanks :)
PARTYNEXTDOOR! You would LOVE analyzing him, he writes a lot of Drake's songs
Kendrick Lamar next?
This was awesome! So insightful...this is definitely my favorite video so far. Thank you for this!
This changed my entire perspective on my music. Thank you.
"It doesn't have to make sense, which brings me back to religion."
Ziiiing
You're videos are great man
Thank you for sharing
I just want to say this
As a producer:
We normally eq drums not reduce sample rate just eq the lows so that they are fuller and they sound better, I personally do this a lot. this also gives the most bass. this is trap hip hop producing 101.
We also cut of low frequencies of the vocals so they dont clash with the low frequencies, to also make the bass sound louder. also trap also removes breathing in songs and the vocals are very compressed also the tracks so if anyone wants these effects, this is how.
He took my whole theory of drake rap style. I said this a long time ago that drake sound like he having a conversation with you and you in the room. Glad to see I'm not the only one that noticed this.
«He’s a black jew from Toronto» I died bruh!

Lost for words. Amazing. Love your analytics.
Really great content. Looking forward to the audio book. Thanks!
2+2 is 4, minus 1 thats 3, quick mafs.
I haven't watched this video yet...but I'm just gonna say that I'm 100% positive he literally just reads the lyrics and makes up his melodies on the spot. That's what they sound like.
clearly u know nothing about rap and how ppl actually record tracks

Another insightful video! Just bought the audio book and excited to give it a listen. Keep em coming!
Amazing video! Thank you Holistic Songwriting!!
I bet even Drake doesn’t know he is doing this😅
Oh trust me he does. He mastered the art of music. That’s how he’s stayed relevant for the past decade
I would totally pay for a course in which you explain secrets artist use to make hit songs, such as Taylor swift, Katy, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber etc. I know all of these artist have some kind of tools (if not a formula) that they keep on using within their songs. We just don't notice them but they do it on purpose
the formula's you can find by breaking apart the songs but you will never be able to write a hit song just using formulas. You either got it or you don't. Of course there are certain rules that all hit songs have, but to people that write them it just comes naturally. Its inspiration. The difference between a hit melody and a regular melody is the hit melody is so natural, it is like talking but with music. The first time you hear it, it's like you already heard it before because it speaks to your soul. The melody in itself is perfect. Writing a hit melody is about listening to your soul, and your spirit, for inspiration. If you try to write you will only write boring unoriginal music, even if it sounds good it will be unoriginal.
Biggest dribble ever written.
This video really made me realize how much of my love for drakes music made it into my own... crazy
You just helped me...a lot....Thankyou 🙌🙏
