MX5 Rust Repairs - Welding In New Metal. Front Arches, Wing, Wheel Well

  • My MX5 failed it's MOT because of corrosion, I could either scrap the car, pay big bucks for a bodyshop to fix it, or I could buy a welding machine and learn how to patch up car panels myself.
It soon became apparent that there were many more rust holes and areas in need of rust treatment than I was expecting. The wing/fender, the inner arch/wheel well, crash bar and floorpan all have areas of corrosion.
This is my first experience welding and properly repairing rusty car panels, so obviously nothing in this video should be taken as advice, you are just watching me work on my car.

Thanks mate. Yea I should have but I did make sure the back surfaces were all coated in cavity wax after they were welded in. I'll use weld through primer on the other corner and see if one rusts out quicker than the other.... Then do it all again LOL.

You should really use weld through primer. Bare metal on the inside will start rusting again very quickly.

Been watching your videos a long time now. Glad to see you are back. I am about to tackle all of that myself. all four corners look like yours. Plan is to completely rebuild the underside of the car free of rust for another 10 years of smooth motoring.

Awesome, I wish you good luck with it. Just focus on small bits at a time, its easy to get overwhelmed when you think about it as a whole.

Awesome videos man, really helped me along the way with my own NB. It needs a bit of welding too and for the prices I’ve been quoted I’ve been wondering if it’s worth trying my hand at a bit of welding too (wanted to since I was a kid). Keep the videos coming though such a good series :)
