I just cannot thank you enough. Until this video, I never knew there were 2 curtains in my camera. I have a Lumix S5, and "light" has always been the limit line of my creativity. Now I feel like I can enter this world and take my photography to the next level!!
This by far the best explanation of this technique, great job! Thank you
Mark Wallace is the shit. Explanations that I really get quick
One of The easiest to grasp explanations I’ve seen. Thanks.
This was a fantastic video that concisely explained something which I have always previously had difficulty understanding - thank you so much!
Thanks, Mark. Terrific explanation of sync speed and controlling the light. Good luck on the motorcycle trip.
Marvelous explanation!!! Went to college to study photography and they would always explain this in such a confusing way.
Best explanation of sync speed I've ever seen. Mark Wallace has been the man for many years now
Thank you! You explanations are so clear!
Another clear, concise helpful video!
best explanation of this concept i have ever seen!
Clear explanation, short and to the point - thank you!
Incredible explanation! Wow!
Great explanation of shutter curtains and sync speed. 👌
great explanation, very simply and understandable.
Brilliant tutorial. Thank you so much.
I would love to see a channel just with your animations. They are very clear and well done
Thank you so much for the scientific explanation, really helped a lot..
Thanks so much, this is as basic as valuable knowledge, I really appreciate it 👍 👍 👌👏
Thanks. I knew what my sync speed was but not why. Great explanation!
Thanks so much, Mark.......a very thorough explanation. Good to see you back. I don't do Facebook (WHAT??), so where in the world are you now. And when will we see a travel video?
Best explanation I’ve ever seen.
perfect explanation! thanks
great video..
thank u Mark
Great video, great model!
Thank you it finally makes sense!
Wonder who the 4 knuckleheads are that gave the video a thumbs down? Marks explanation was accurate and well illustrated.
haters are going to hate no matter what, we just keep on loving and shooting.
LOL @ 4 knuckleheads!
I wish they would take the thumbs down away. You either like or not.
jaaa those who hate light meters
Fabian said it, haters. Can't live without them :)
Excellent demo thanks
NICE finally someone explained it
Damn! thanks for this my problem solved!
so.... do I always have to match the f-stop of the ambient light with the f-stop of the flash? after metering both?
Fantastic explanation of sync speed Mark...my only disappointment is there was only one picture of that gorgeous model.
This is great info, it still can be the same with LED light in stead of flash .
On my Sony a7iii I have live view, how would I see my subject through my view finder with no ambient light to see them??
Great video....She's beautiful too!
Could you use an ND filter instead on shutting your aperture down? That way you can still get the depth of field of your aperture at widest opening or use the sharpest aperture of your lens?
yes
Does this work for videos as well?
basically to sum this up: keep aperture hole small but increase strength of the flash to make it bright. light meter to calibrate between these 2 variables
If I use modeling light do I have to kill it or modeling light doesn’t matter .? I use it for focusing my camera
awesome
Can you cancel the ambient light if you you a continuous light, instead of flash /softbox?
Gorgeous model! 😍
Please explain how works high speed sync. Thank's!
Austris Photo In hss your camera works the same but your flash or strobe fires a multiple number of times
Thanks for the great video. but i was wondering if I can make the same effect without having a light meter?
you don't need a light meter to make it work, it's just to measure the light. you can just take a picture and adjust from there
what if i want shallow depth of field, let's say I want to shoot at f1.4 or 2.8?how do you set the camera in this case with hss? lowest iso, highest shutter speed possible and than you play around with the flash power to find what's good for you?
If you have HSS your problem is solved, just crank up the shutter speed. Or use an ND filter
Great video, Mark. I have a question: I understand the principle of adjusting the exposure so that none of the ambient light is reading through the camera before you introduce the flash. I've actually seen this in many other videos online. My issue is, I'm now looking through the camera and I can't see anything, until the flash fires. How do I frame for the model? How do I set focus? How do I know the exact moment to release the shutter? Am I missing something? Please advise.
if you have a mirrorless camera turn on active preview or whatever your brand calls it. otherwise get flashes with modeling lamps
@@evocati6523 Thank you so much for posting this response as I couldn't figure it out either!!
But how do you see the model if you use a mirrorless and you have set your camera to get rid of ambient light. If you cant see her you cant focus.
Great explanation of sync speed. Would have liked to not see the wrinkles on the backdrop from the strobe, though -- just a pure black background.
allontana il soggetto dal fondale
If you have the room, you can also pull your subject away from the background even more.
I'm new to flash photography. Your comment confirms what I thought. Thanks.
great
After the settings eliminate the ambient light, what exactly do I do next?
Lock the Diaphragm aperture and then change the shutter speed to control exposure. He's using a photometer, so he just has to place it in front of the model and it'll tell him at what speed he has to shoot to get the perfect exposure.
Turn on your flash and adjust the power to get where you want
Hello Mark....how to aim and compose after the ambient light is completely eliminated? As the viewfinder is totally black out...
Turn on active preview if you have a mirrorless camera. Otherwise get flashes with modeling lamps
i feel for you kelly.
how do you find out your cameras sync speed??
With a flash attached raise the shutter speed until it won't let you go up any more
And the most important : It depend on your flash power / time to reload :)
Where are you now. Still in Columbia?
lol
How do you focus when your camera doesn't capture any light without the flash?
If I understand correctly, the AF system is independent from the camera sensor.
Did you ever figure this out? Because in my experience you can’t which is why I’m buying a strobe today
@@simmonskrystal most modern mirrorless cameras will raise the ISO while you preview the shot so you can see what you're going to be shooting
But the background wasn't pitch black. It was a little illuminated by the flash, and the curtain behind the model is visible.
But since that light is coming from the flash, you could have the background totally black, if that is what you want, by positioning your light so that it casts light on your subject but blocks any light from spilling onto the background. :)
Super
where is the link to kelly instagram, fb, twitter? she is stunning
who is the model?
hahaha..
same question!
that's it you shot the flashmeter
Gee,it,s the best tool in daylight without h.s.s.
I think.
The Slow Mo Guys did a high frame rate video of a camera shutter. You can see it here: czcams.com/video/CmjeCchGRQo/video.html It's interesting and clearly shows what Mark is talking about in this video.
It seemed an impossibility until you demonstrated it.
He snatched the equipment from her.
i lost u when that model came in...
Samtagri lol yeh she was but still sexy :)
maybe Happy go lucky nice guy Mark shouldn't get models that look like they're going through a divorce.
hahahhahaha
Maybe we should actually focus on what the video is about.
Can this young lady be any more disinterested?
