Animal Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi - As Ranbir Kapoor enters the film interrupting YET another wedding, with yet another embarrassing song performance, a sort of 4th wall breaks, reminding you how many times you’ve seen the actor do this before. Almost like reading our minds, then it goes “AHA! So you think you know Ranbir haan? Now let me show you what your wildest imagination could not have anticipated”. And that’s what Animal boils down to, intended to provoke “snowflakes” and opinionated critics of Vanga’s last outing, Kabir Singh, very carefully picking out commentary on that film, and giving it just a bit of a twist. So you were concerned at men applauding when Kabir slapped Preeti? Sure, Vijay will never slap his wife Geentanjali, played by Rashmika, she will slap him, so when you bring up Vijay’s misogyny, these slaps can be invoked. Oh you didn’t like how Kabir debased Preeti? Look how Geetanjali debases herself. It's almost like Vijay fancies himself as a Napoleonic king. There is a scene in BOTH Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and Animal where this “conqueror” returns home to his nubile, attractive wife and makes her take her clothes off in front of the house help, presenting her body for him to admire and touch. While Ridley Scott’s Napoleon is seen through a comedic lens, as a pitiable fool who doesn’t realize all his heinous actions are leading him towards an embarrassing end, Vanga’s Vijay is heroic and tragic right till the end. Asking his audience to empathize with and love this sad, broken but strong man, who kills people because his father didn’t cut a birthday cake or two.

Gangs of wasseypur was a very violent film infact in the end Nawaz keeps shooting at Ramadhir Sing even if he is dead but none of the violence is glorified or justified. Infact the movie ends with a rebounding resolution that violence only leads to more violence. If the characters are not held accountable for their actions in some way there is no resolution to their arc .

5 years ago Anupama interviewed Ranbir on Film Companion which is still available on CZcams. It's a 32 minute interview. This is the last 10 minutes of that conversation.
Anupama: You are doing a film with luv Ranjan whose films are steeped in misogyny.
Ranbir : ...yaa but I was not part of those films. I'm quite conscious of the kind of parts I do and if it's a part which belittles society or is unfair to someone, I wouldn't do it because to understand the position I'm in I have to be conscious, I've to be aware. I have to represent a certain value system that I want to express.
Later he says, ( in context with misogyny )
…You know certain things you have to be aware of like who you are as a person . What are your ideologies? What do you stand for? Because film is a true representation also about you as an artist you have to be aware of what you are standing up for. Your films have to kind of reflect that. Certain things I probably believed that are instilled in my value system that I wouldn't do.
Cut to the present day 😁

Such a well-caught example of hypocrisy. If only "commercial actors" were conscious enough of the impact of such ideologies on the big screen and didn't associate with these projects, what big difference would that make to keep such movies away from the large-scale audience.

Watch it as a movie not as a fucking social message film holy. The first half is enjoyable and the second half is a slog. But idk why u guys can’t watch a movie as a movie, bad or good in terms of quality is different, but judging a film based on messaging when its point is not to send a message is just wrong. This film has misogyny but that’s the character and how he is written, it doesn’t make others involved misogynists.

I, for one, agree with everything she says. But she talks about the moral responsibility of the movies i lost it. I mean, does she talk about the moral responsibility of movie makers when women in the movies are shown immorally and distasteful. When the movies and shows are responsible for spoiling entire generation of women into thinking their natural inclination is just to have sex as much as possible, drink, smoke, etc When men are written from women's perspective and lack depth and are shallow and most often then not are shown as predators. Men in such movies or shows have no complexities. But that is celebrated as women empowerment and complex female characters.
Animal is a movie of complex male character and masculinity. Ranbir's character is troubled.
Anyways, there is definitely scope of improvement in Vanga's writing, but it should be conveyed as such not attacked because you don't agree with the movie. Definitely, women in Vanga's can be more fleshed out.

Another conversation that we need is why supposedly "brilliant" actors choose such characters and films in the name of cinematic vision. Leave Ranbir and Anil, Tripti Dimri, who delivered Bulbbul, is a part of that film. Vanga's Tarantino fetishim is palpable and we can wait another 50 years for him to admit like Karan Johar that the politics of Kuch Kuch Hota Hain is flawed. But if actors' drive for movies is only "to show range" and "make hits" who openly claim "I don't care about critiques, only box office", how does that represent an industry at the global platform?

For someone who craved that love from his father, I was surprised at how LITTLE he spent time with his own son?!
Wish the film had dived deeper into the Anil/Ranbir father son dynamic instead of focussing on protection & revenge.
I went in thinking I'd hate the movie, as I struggled with Arjun Reddy (took a month to finish it) & refused to see Kabir Singh.
The screenplay was, at times, incoherent. The scene where he's suddenly in his beard, as he goes to his brother in law, seemed so outa place to start with.
But, I have to say, I cant recall the last time Ranbir, the actor, shone like this.
Yes, the character isn't someone I agree with, but as someone who really likes the actor, he had alota moments in which he left such an impact!
Rashmika, too, gave a damn good performance, she was bloody impressive in that karwa chauth scene.
I'm not the target audience for this movie, but truthfully didn't mind it.
Are there issues with the representation of masculinity, entitlement & character arc?? Yup.
So whilst I enjoyed Ranbir, I wasn't rooting for his character.
The movie is definitely stylish, and judging by the audience reponse in my screen, will appeal to many - and maybe that in itself will create an opportunity for people to discuss issues of such character traits in people they idiolise onscreen 👍🏼
Still, loved your analysis, though 🙌🏼

    • @mrgyani
      @mrgyani Před 8 měsíci +16

      The problem isn't that.
The problem is this seems the output of a shockingly immature mind - a man child who never grew up. And is fascinated by power, control, dominance, chaddi jokes, dick jokes and cringe dialogbazi.
Also there is a psychotic fascination with anger as some sort of virtue.
It will appeal to the public because this has always been the maturity level of the Indian public. Quite sad really.
I believe what YOU liked were the action bits, the aesthetics, the acting and the style & glamor. That's fine.
Also great how you don't approve of the problematic aspects (but this isn't even about that, even if you ignore all that, as Suchita refused to get into the misogyny argument 4:56) - this movie isnt art, is glaringly dumb, vacuous and silly (immature). That is the problem.

    • @seemonjena659

Finally got to see some sane comments after a lot of glorification! Ranbir Kapoor's acting is marvellous but the character is beyond redemption. No matter how much a person has been neglected by one's parents but that will mot justify his narcissistic, obsessive behaviour and treatment of women as objects! Had the father son dynamic been more detailed just maybe the reaosnable half of Indian audiennce would have pittied Ranvijay Singh!

it won't create a oppurtunity for people to critically Analyse the character, as we have seen before. he will be idolised as the case with Kabir Singh. The problem is not decpiction of sensitive topics and issues. the problem is that it should be handled in a mature and sensitive way. This movie moral compass is in itself broken so handling the topic carefully is too much to ask.

I don’t think that if a son is neglected by his father but still loves him will spend more time loving his own son and not keep looking for his father’s love. The movie showcased perfectly that his disease of a love for his father has ruined all of his relationships, and how resorting to violence also ruined it. It’s a non linear narrative but was coherent. It wasn’t like Japan where it was linear but felt disjointed as hell

  • @nagasuryadurgaprasadpetta4887
    @nagasuryadurgaprasadpetta4887 Před 8 měsíci +11

Oh My God the entire movie went so much over her head,
The Plot of the movie is about the constant love and approval Vijay needed from his father which he never got and all the violence is ignited for the sole reason of murder attempt on his dad one of the most powerful men in the country and the guy who helped for the assualt is none other than his brother in law with whom he already shares a troubled relationship.
Not even once she talked about the father being attacked and his body double being killed violently and the reveal of brother in law connection right after that wouldn't make someone most violent they can be.
Whenever you review a movie you have to talk about everything in it not just the parts you want to get your bites on, Harshvardhan did an extraordinary job scoring for the film he didn't deserve to get a one liner from reviewers afterr the end of their ranting. and all the songs by different artists fit perfectly into the films screenplay each deserves a mention atleast.
The action choreography was good and not trying to over achieve or overdo
Rashmika did a great job at the confrontation scene, I personally hating the protagonist choices at this point and wanted to rage it all out ehich was done very well by her, i was hooting for her like hell yeah but god forbid we appreciate the female lead in this movie we want to brand as misogynistic and father of all evil.
The protagonist was not presented to be loved especially in the second half.
The film is not perfect in a writing point of view but you never talked about the merits that could've been made in the screenplay.
The film is strictly rated for adults who are supposed to be separate fiction from reality and art from the artist. If you are not one please stop watching movies rated for adults.
The men you are complaining about enjoying this movie also enjoyed kill bill with a female lead and whoever may not watched it yet will definitely love it too.
People bashing about responsibility of the film maker but what about the section of people who are praising your review and targetting the personal life Ranbir and Sandeep including their wives, are the not worse than the keyboard warriors you talked about at the end if not the same. Do you take responsibility on that madam ??

India is going through a cultural upheaval it seems with women not afraid or perhaps less afraid to use their voice against the traditional ways that they are being held back and the same traditions that they were forced to uphold. This movie is a reflection of the frustrations of the average basic man who feels his privilege is being pulled out from under him, who whilst not having any or at most very little power in society as a whole, could at least count on his manhood to give him default authority over any women. But life and progress will march on, these type of men will have nothing more than these types of movies to hold on to to assert their masculinity

You need to self reflect and understand that you are NOT a film critic.. you are a Feminist only who cannot look beyond ideology to do a film critic's job.
It's ridiculous to see the quality of work of self-proclaimed film critics in India.
A film critic's job is to analyze direction, acting, plot, cinematography, depth of thinking, authenticity, music writing and originality etc of a film.
And NOT get hung up on your feminist views only about a film..

The problem with the critics is that they can not accept that a character like vijay, aka animal, can't exist.
    Let me break it down
vijay sees his father Balbeer as an alpha man because Balbeer gets everything as per will. Balbeer is like a king of the kingdom.
Now Balbeer doesn't have time for his son or his family. so in the absence of Balbeer, vijay thinks he should be in charge like a prince and do whatever is possible to save the kingdom (in this case it's Vijay's family ).
Vijay has grown up thinking like that, and his father was not there to teach him the values of being king. Hence Vijay by himself isn't able to see that thin line between being an empathic king and an arrogant king so he becomes an animal.
this is a story arc of a character which this so-called critic isn't able to see and coming up with shitty arguments like morals and all. there is no way you should be like Vijay. He is a complex and fucked up guy but that doesn't mean people like him don't exist. it's a fictional character so stop obsessing with him whether you are a critic or an audience. the movie should be treated like a movie, not a morality class unless it's not fictional.

It’s not about accepting a character like him. The issue with the film is not this. The issue is how the story is being created and told. As she mentioned about the loosely connected sub plots. Taking time to show things which in no way contribute to the story and only distracts and confuses audience. So she’s right. There were scenes just for the shock value and there were many. Also couldn’t agree more on the last scene between bobby and ranbir. The background song made no sense and audience could not even feel those emotions. The scenes were stretched and at many points. Romantic song with tripti- the song is nice but audience couldn’t feel the lyrics with their storyline. So most of the movie was just plain embarrassing. Such a badly made movie.
So the problem is not the topic or the character. The problem is there was no story, bad dialogues and execution. Not at all entertaining.

Being in 2023, your argument is completely baseless. Just because we should accept it as a movie and move on, doesn't mean all the teanage boys who will secretly download the movie, watch it and gain valuable insights on how to disrespect women should be ignored. We as audience should make the directors KNOW that we ain't taking such bullshit in the name of JUST a movie ! There is no positive impact this movie has! It's giving a nudge to other animals in this world(like you say exist) to bloody keep doing what they doing. Excuse me sir, this 2023. Keep your opinions to 1675! Thank you

What a lot of people are not realizing is that this was a movie critiquing toxic masculinity manifested in different forms in desi society. The movie attempts to show the problems in different sections of society in which men have been burdened to project what they think it means to be a man. The punjabi jatt men, muslim men, marathi men, rich men, poor village men, labor workers, thugs, businessmen, politicians, etc. This is also reflected in both Bobby and Ranbir’s characters. Both destroyed their lives in an attempt to fulfill their self prescribed duties towards the elder men of their families. There are so many angles in the movie on this topic. People are only looking at the surface of the movie but not understanding the depth. It wasn’t glorifying any of it. In fact it showed how these men ended up broken in the end. The women in their lives also in their own way propagate and support this behavior as they have done in real life as well. It’s a cycle. The root of which is the father son relationship. A father has to teach his son what being a “good” man means. The definition of which needs to change. But, when that presence isn’t there then boys create their own definitions with their own ideas. This usually doesn’t turn out well. Look beyond the surface of the movie, this is an incredible social commentary on the burden on men as well as women in their own ways as human beings.

Having to be the breadwinner of family. Having to go out, work hard, be treated like crap to earn some money and still maintain a tough exterior. Having everyone expect a lot of success and money from you but get no emotional support. NONE OF WHICH is shown in the movie. The men in the "social commentary" and loaded with money. Honestly, That's just a point of view as humble a counter. lot of good characters are left unresolved and they and still very effective. This need of a necessary arc of change is not essential in storytelling. That's the anti-hero aspect of the human experience. Besides Animal is a downright satire on violence and on toxic personality of males and the insecurity associated with that. Not masculinity, which is so subtle throughout the film and can go easily unnoticed and below the nose "Animal Park Come...visit soon".
And the filmmaker is making the perfect statement about this misguided perception of masculinity, its just that people have different sensitivities. He stood by his words when he said I will show them what a violent film really is. There was a time non linear story telling was almost crime to commit but then someone like a Sergio Leone or a George Lucas went and broke that regime. Animal is smart movie with all clues to obvious problems of society and men's personality and thinking not masculinity, "what are you essentially buying and selling?!" - as an open question to anyone.
Of course its not a genre breaking film and a typical style of commercial dram on steroids. Nothing in it is that new but what it does with narrative is tips it on its head. I can sense the storytellers sipping on whisky just laughing at all the commotion when the message is so obvious, I wish Adipurush guys had brains like this. It's ANIMAL!!
If it really was try hard garbage, then no one would care about it. Audiences are not that stupid. Watch Clock Work Orange for example, does Alex change? Or Fight Club? Dr Strangelove? Joker? aren't they....satires or violent with a lot of layering? You must listen to Chuck Palahnik talk about fight club and subverted storytelling.
There's no requirement that the filmmaker has to take responsibility every time, especially when things are this obvious. he is given everyone an equal blast of a time. Imagine the amount of "how could you show that?!" moments to filmmakers, artists, Impressionists or storytellers across time. That's a Zero Sum Game!!
