Lou Holtz built a machine while at ND. He was the perfect fit for that school. I hope he doesn't leave us too soon. After this game, Dr. Lou never took the Spartans lightly ever again while as HC.

Pat O'Brien was at Spartan Stadium for this game, along with some NYC High Hat friends. They were walking along the end zone in front of the student section. I may not have been the first to see him, but I was certainly first to speak up, yelling "Hey, Pat! Your Hair! It's Perfect!!" That got a whole bunch of people going about these big shooters in our midst. A good game for State, though seeing Dave Yarema doing a dance at 11:53 was a little unsettling. I went to Northwestern for the last road game and dubbed them "The best 5-5 team in the country." George P. was learning how to win at this point.

Great game, was there - At 12:26 that's me third from the left doing the 'hat dance'. Good times.

Andy, I would love it if you could find Perles' first win against the Irish at ND in 1983. We were 28 point underdogs that year. I remember it well!

The 1966 10-10 tie was 20 years prior. I was at this game and at that time 1966 was ancient history to me. Its strange to think how now its been 34 years since this game, and it seems anything but ancient history; in fact, it seems like it was yesterday. Time has gone in the blink of an eye. I remember tailgating with a big group of friends between Demonstration Hall and Munn. Several of us parked in the metered parking on Dem Hall Road which is the little street between Dem Hall and Munn. You can't get anywhere near the stadium on game days anymore without huge donations to the Ralph Young Fund.

Yeah! Good call! I was there, and I remember telling my dad, "That Drew Brees kid is stud! I think he has a bright future in the NFL!"
I think Purdue may have had five running plays that entire game. 90% of the formations were Brees alone in shotgun, and five receivers out wide. Future HOFer or not, Sparty came away with a big win! Go Green!

...And this would be the last time that Michigan State would beat The Irish under George Perles...

And the year Perles left is the last time the Irish would beat the Spartans until 2002
