  • Date: 12/6/23
Location: 4th St & 5th Ave, Minneapolis, MN
    Temp: 40°F
Signal: 1 minute alert, 1 minute attack
    Units Heard:
    Vortex R4 (main unit) - 175 feet
Several other Minneapolis & Golden Valley sirens within a ~5 mi radius
First off, I want to apologize for my mic having an absolute stroke whenever the siren faces the camera. This was very loud and we we were within 200 feet at eye level, and I stupidly forgot to set the gain down before the test. Anyways, this test was AWESOME. This was a last minute target that Sam and I chose earlier today after the St. Croix test and it was so worth it!! Tons of sick echoes in both alert and attack on top of it being loud as all hell. Thanks for watching, and enjoy!
Hennepin County tests their siren system on the first Wednesday of every month at 1 PM.

I wonder how long does a typical Whelen Vortex last until replacement since these are made of Fiberglass am sure in the decades ahead another system wide replacement is possible

These newer ones are made of plastic like the 2900 series. Considering that there are still a number of WS-3000s from the 80s still standing I'm sure they'll hold up just fine over the years aside from the drivers when they inevitably blow after 10-20 years of service.

Interesting how this runs on a ESC 2020

How do you tell the difference between this and a 2030?

Ayo, I think this siren threw hands with Thor at some point and couldn't catch the fade... It has an ESC-2020 logic board instead of a 2030, and judging by the cracks and dent in the driver cover it looks like either one of the drivers may have literally exploded in the process or that was the point of entry.

This siren was installed in 2017 so that would be some fucky shit on Frontline’s end if it’s not a 2030.

@@mnsirens They probably had the drivers on hand at the time when they repaired it but didn't have a newer board and used what they had in the shop instead of waiting to get one from Whelen. It wouldn't be the first, but it's interesting to see it done with this system. MobilComm did that to a siren in Houston County, GA and downgraded one of their 2909s to a 435 Hz 2020 board and MWS downgraded a Vortex in Peach County from a 2030 to a 2020 when the original panel wouldn't process the activation tones. The encoder emitted them too slowly for the board to comprehend.

@@DJ2226I’m a little late but per Adam himself the siren was installed with the board it currently has.
