Dangerous Cave Scuba Diving in Hospital Hole @ Weeki Wachee River Florida

  • I went cave scuba diving in Hospital Hole on the Weeki Wachee river in Florida. Hospital hole is a 130 foot deep natural underwater cavern on the Weeki Wachee river, the river is fed from Weeki Wachee Springs state park and is crystal clear cool fresh water. Scuba diving in the hole is a little scary and can be very dangerous if one is not careful. As you dive deeper into the hole the water changes clarity in differing layers. At about 75 feet deep you almost completely lose visibility. Florida has so many unique dive spots and is filled with natural beauty like the Weeki Wachee river.
    While I was getting ready to scuba dive the hole I met Brandon Jordan from one of my favorite CZcams channels ‪@JigginWithJordan‬ . He was out here metal detecting a popular swimming spot on the river. Check out his latest video at Weeki Wachee • Searching for GOLD Tre...

      I second this. Cave diving is dangerous, you NEED training and equipment. If you don’t hold a proper cave diving certification stay out of holes. So, good on you man. I’m glad to see a CZcams diver making good choices for his viewers.

      Yes, once you drop below the hydrogen sulfide layer you lose all natural light. The sinkhole being hour glass shaped it is possible to be unable to make an unobstructed ascent. I highly suggest a minimum of cavern or cave training for this dive. (NACD Full Cave Certified 1991)

    Thanks for the tour. Jiggin with Jordan was why I went searching for someone else exploring hospital hole. It would seem that Florida would install some kind of netting in the hole to prevent people from going lower than 80 feet or so. I'm afraid of heights, so there's no way I would venture close to something like that.

    • @JoeOceanside
      @JoeOceanside  Před 4 lety

      Thats awesome! Glad you enjoyed the video! Brandon Jordan is a great guy. Yeah it is a little scary how deep that hole is. Hospital Hole is a sink hole technically not a cave or cavern. And the "murky water" he speaks of is deadly poisonous hydrogren sulphide that typically occurs around 70-80 ft depth. THAT MURKY WATER IS VERY DANGEROUS, YOU DON'T WANT TO HANG OUT IN IT, PUNCH THROUGH IT AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. Stay safe out there and keep the fins water. God Bless.

    Great video, thumbs up and new sub for sure. Good on you for mentioning how dangerous this dive is. This is one of my favorite spots because of how interesting it is. What I have gathered is the "murky" layer is hydrogen sulfide. It is toxic but not like battery acid toxic, more like mild irritant toxic. The hydrogen sulfide is created from organic materials that fall to the bottom of the hole and decompose. The layer is created by the difference in salinity of the water. The water below the hydrogen sulfide has a higher salinity, aka salt water, and above is fresh water. The salt water being more dense creates a layer for the hydrogen sulfide to rest on.
    That means that this hole is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico! Margarita time!
    BUT it has not been explored enough (or is not possible to explore enough) to confirm this, however....the depth of the hydrogen sulfide layer does change, and it moves with the tides.
    I have nothing to back this knowledge other than the limited info out there and my time spent at hospital hole. I very well could be wrong, sry if I am.
    The swiss cheese hole is a vent that water used to flow through. Good on you for not swimming through it! I made the other decision and chose to swim (free dive) through it and did in fact get stuck. I was able to wiggle free but you better believe I wont be dong that again.
    Cheers!
