The single version is vastly better than the somewhat leaden album version but still did not chart in the top 40 in Britain. The eighties saw diminishing returns for OMD in the UK as their fortunes rose in America. Forever (Live and Die) was their last substantial hit in Britain in 1986 from the same album The Pacific Age. It is a very good album although it was probably rushed after Crush in 1985. Shame just goes to show that even a catchy song by an established band who have had major success can fail to land when the tide turns. Still, number 4 in America with If You Leave in 1986 and number 16 with Dreaming in 1988 must have been some consolation for the decline of their popularity in Europe in the latter part of the eighties. Dreaming was released twice in Britain but failed to make the top 40 despite being a brilliant song.

Thank you, they had in Germany 3x Top 10, 5x Top 30 and 8x Top 50.
Maid of Orleans #1 Forever Live and Die #8 , Sailing on the Seven Seas #9

@@MaxisMaximal I knew they were popular in Germany but not chart positions. Their reformation occurred due to an appearance on a German television show in about 2006-they decided to resume the original band and make an album. History Of Modern is excellent. Sailing On The Seven Seas got to number 2 in Britain and was a major turnaround when McCluskey recorded as OMD with other musicians following the split in 1989. I would not be bothered these days in my older and possibly slightly wiser years, but in 1989 I wrote to the fan club urging the band not to split. I did not expect a reply but Andy McCluskey wrote back blaming the split on musical differences. I lost the letter in a house move in London in the 1990s. Not as bad as Blancmange losing a letter from Abba praising their ( sublime)version of The Day Before You Came, in a pub in London! Now that is a letter no-one would want to lose.

The single version was produced by Rhett Davies who has produced almost all of Roxy Music's classic albums (and Dazzle Ships that wasn't exactly his sound). Somehow "Shame" was closer to Davies's sound than OMD's experimental masterpiece from 1983.

@@annexzero3398 Dazzle Ships is not a masterpiece. It has a few good tracks but it is not surprising that it did not sell as much as Architecture and Morality and that the public were lukewarm towards it. The notion that it is brilliant is relatively recent revisionism.

@@annexzero3398 I can totally hear Roxy Music in this song! Good connection!
