  • Deep dive into GTA 4's nitty-gritty details! To my knowledge, these haven't been showcased on YT before and so they are quite obscure pieces of Grand Theft Auto IV trivia. From secret features to crazy attention to detail, all these could easily be missed. I'm honestly curious to know if you knew any of these or not, so tell me if you wish to!

Now, I ain't sure if you know this but it's not necessarily a detail but something I kinda figured out with the police scanner. It's been here since GTA 2. Now by compass direction, we got North, South, East and West. But, there's one compass direction that you possibly haven't noticed during a car chase, shootouts, etc. And that's the center (central part of a location.) For example, if you commit a crime in the central part of Schottler, the police scanner will say that's there's "shots fired" in "central Schottler." Kinda of an obvious fact but I didn't realize this until a year and half ago.
It's also the same with GTA EFLC (obviously) and GTA 5.
Also, the police scanner doesn't give out the intercardinal compass directions (North-west, North-east, South-west, and South-east.) when the other GTA games did. Pretty weird. (It's the same thing for GTA 5 as well.)

GTA IV generally was ahead of its time. It has details that even modern games fail to include. GTA V did a lot of things right but I'm always sad when I think about all the cool little things from GTA IV they missed. All the cool interiors you can visit, hotdog vendors, destructible environment, car damage, gradually deflating tires, ability to pick up objects and throw them, really cool ragdoll physics and more. I hope GTA VI combines the best elements from IV, V and RDR2 to create an ultimate GTA experience. We've been waiting so many years they need to come up with a banger now. Yeah but as we can say "people prefer V for some reason", we can also say "people prefer San Andreas for some reason", as this comment mentions. Maybe nostalgia is a big factor in this. SA uses the same engine as III, yeah we all know it has TONS of features that III doesn't have, but in the end, the base was the same.
In only 4 years the change from SA to IV was huge. I don't know if any of us could have a objective opinion. Plus, I don't if we can compare a game from 2004 to one from 2008.

Same, me and one of my best friends at that time were around 13 - 14 and went to nearly every shop in the inner city (germany) to look for the game. It was sold out everywhere. At last we went to this huge old traditional family owned toy store and saw from a couple meters away the one copy left. We both started to run to get the game and right when we got into a fight about who gets it, a employee comes along with a hand full of copies. Then we had to get someone to buy it for us. The first girl we asked was around 25 who laughed and immediately said yes when she saw the joy in our eyes. We waited outside, got the 2 copies from her went home and were blown away calling each other talking about how insane the game is.

There are quite a lot more details I've run across since I played this game for years. Concerning the rusty beater vehicles:
    - Tires have noticeably less grip since nobody would put any kind of fresh rubber on a beater car.
    - Brakes are very weak and the suspension is all beaten up with really bad damping from all the use and abuse and you can feel it in the handling
    - The catalytic converters and exhausts on them are old and worn and will crackle and pop compared to newer and better maintained cars
    - Beaters will have a hard time starting up and most likely won't start on first crank
But there's also some various nice touches:
    - Different shoe types make different sounds
    - Manhole covers make a sound when you drive over them
    - Tire rolling noise and screech noise is different in the dry and in the wet
    - Fistfights are incredibly different depending on who you're up against, some regular fat guy on the street will punch slow and won't defend himself, while a strong gangbanger moves fast, hits in flurries of punches and deals more damage
It's small things like these that make this the best game in the series and a benchmark for the genre to this day.

There is an absolutely amazing detail that I want to tell. You can put your own music to the game and listen it through the channels on GTA IV. I've noticed that every car has a different audio system quality. Since I had the ability to test a song that I knew very well how it sounds, I tried it. *Fun Fact* : Open-top cars have less depth to the music and if you are in a tunnel or somewhere small, your open top car actually blasts music out the car and it Eco's.

When the engine billows white smoke at low but still decent health, it sounds like its radiator is leaking and overheating; at very low health, the engine makes rattling and knocking noises. Also, sports cars that backfire when off the gas have said backfire develop brown smoke with lower engine health.
