  • In this video we're diving deep into the recent changes with Chamberlain's MyQ smart garage door platform. Let's just say, things aren't looking good for customization and convenience.
    Chamberlain Group, the folks behind LiftMaster, recently made changes that stripped away features and broke integrations with popular smart home platforms like Google Assistant and Alexa. This move essentially locked out thousands of users, including YOU, our awesome community.
    We'll be discussing what features are gone, how this affects your smart home setup, and why Chamberlain might have made this decision. Is this the end of MyQ? Is there any way to regain control?

    I appreciate your sharing and one of the reason I got their product was because of what you brought up.

    When Lift Master/Chamberlain first came out with MyQ, I believe they use to charge a monthly fee for it?! I thought it was smart doing away with the monthly fee. I "WAS" a Lift Master/Chamberlain fan boy and recommended them to everyone. I was getting ready to replace a perfectly good garage door opener for a jackshaft, now I am reconsidering. I did purchase a RATGDO but not happy I am being forced to take those actions. I am very disappointed Lift Master/Chamberlain. Thanks for the video.

    That's useful information, thanks!
    I would definitely consider other brands if I was looking and I'd be mad if I bought something that worked for free, then they later changed it to a subscription or paywall. All these companies going to subscription base services just for a few extra bells and whistles suck, they hold that over you if you buy their product.
    Other home automation companies have gone that route, brick the devices if you don't toe line and pay every month.

      What features of MyQ do you use most?

    I bought my opener with the understanding it would work as a smart home device. My hope was to use geofencing to open and close door while on my motorcycle. Well needless to say they removed that feature right after I got it set up. MyQ was a huge waste of money, they will never receive a dime from me for a subscription. Thank you for putting this out.

    I am one of those unfortunate 20,000+ MyQ Chamberlain users left in the cold. Are there any alternative garage door openers? I am ready to remove and replace the locally working Chamberlain with another brand.

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  Před 5 dny

      That is a fair decision. It's sad when these companies offer free features and services just to later charge them to you down the road.
      I hope this gives LiftMaster the opportunity to do something for their current MyQ customers.

    Bad decision imo its gonna hurt them in the long run. I'm not much of a chamberlain/liftmaster fan anymore but I've always loved the myq app, really nice UI and really easy to set up and get working. But killing off 3rd party apps just doesn't make sense to me, and the statement from the CTO saying they did it to "continue to provide myq users with the best possible experience" makes it seem like they're downplaying it, especially giving the 0.2% figure. 0.2% isn't much but 20,000 people is a lot, they're so focused on making as much money as possible you'd think they keep the 3rd party support to appeal to those people go make more profit. All they're doing is giving us more reasons to get a genie or a linear

      Hey Andy! Thanks for all your great feedback.
      What have your customers said about these changes?
      Do you see many moving to the Genie product because of this?

    • @TBHD724
      @TBHD724 Před 2 měsíci +1

      I'm not sure what our customers here think. We haven't switched brands yet we mainly use liftmaster for resi, we're switching to Manaras for commercial though

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  Před 2 měsíci

      Manaras? I haven't heard of them. Tell me more.

    • @TBHD724
      @TBHD724 Před 2 měsíci +1

      It's the yellow and green ones, I think we switched because of the price increases and I guess they aren't too fond of DC motors in commercial openers. We installed one on one of our dock doors and it seems to be a decent opener and it's quieter then the liftmasters were

    The comparison to Apple is appropriate. However, that move only caused Linux users to explode in numbers.

      That is a very good point!
      There are so many that are upset about this move. I wonder who will answer the call in the garage door industry to bring out a strong competitor to both MyQ and Aladdin connect.

      What model of LiftMaster do you own? The older models still have some of the functionality.

    I’m glad my new home came with Guardian openers. Now I won’t have to purchase from that evil corporation and can just hookup my Tailwind interface. That saves me a boatload of money.

    Great video! Thanks for posting it.
    I'm in the market for a new garage door opener. I currently have a 2007 Craftsman 139.53918D. I was initially looking for an opener with built-in Apple HomeKit integration. But since Chamberlain discontinued third-party MyQ access, and others may follow, I'm now thinking about getting a basic but super reliable garage door opener and a separate third-party HomeKit-compatible controller like the Tailwind iQ3.
    What basic garage door opener do you recommend for a 2007 Clopay 16' x 7' builder-grade insulated garage door and is there a 3rd party HomeKit compatible controller you prefer? Thanks!

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  Před měsícem +1

      Hello! Thank you for your feedback!
      And thank you for sharing your situation. The Tailwind should still be able to work with the LiftMaster openers. Their product serves as a bridge as you say. Thus you can have the confidence to use it with any of the GDOs from the Chamberlain corp.
      AS for which 3rd party bridge I do not have a preference. I feel they all offer a way to work around the issue MyQ has now created.
      Might I suggest the LiftMaster 84504R. It offers all the bells and whistles you might want in a GDO?
