    @ageoflove1980 Před rokem +3

Its really unique in the way that this project was financed, by creating this outer layer of condo's. They are quite in demand, as it is right in the center of The Netherland's second city, Rotterdam, so the building almost payed for itself. A project such as this is unique in the country. Unfortunately the city center of Rotterdam suffered catastrophic damage when it was bombed in 1940 by the German airforce. There is an upside however to this terrible event, an event in which 1000's of people died, so " upside" with all the respect to those who lost their lives in the bombardment.
Anyway, like I said the city is completely unique in The Netherlands because they obviously had to rebuild it from scratch after the war. This means that there is loads of interesting modern artchitecture and the only city in the country that is dominated by downtown skyscrapers. The Markthal also fits into this theme. While most Dutch cities are naturally appealing by their historical beauty, Rotterdam had to work really hard and think really creative to "invent" tourist attractions from scratch and this building is a very succesful example of that.
I can really recommend Rotterdam for people who want an authentic " off the beaten track" Netherlands experience. We all know the canals with the old buildings, the windmills and all that, but in Rotterdam you will get a completely different experience. Its the largest port in the world outside of Asia, in the 20th century it actually was the largest port in the world, because this is the point where Europe's largest river, the Rhine, flows into the North Sea. It is a real down to earth, working class city that remains largely unknown to people outside the country. By itself its not that big, the municipality of Rotterdam only has 623,000 inhabitants, but the entire urban area has around 2.7 million, making it one of the larger urban centers in Europe, yet people from outside the country often dont even seem to realise its there at all. Very underrated and recommmended when you want to see actual Dutch people going about their business.

'Pepernoot' which translates to 'pepper nut'. Due to its 17 th. century original Dutch South African settlers recipe. Yes, back in the day there was pepper and pepperish like spices inside. They ate them while having beer and coffee.
The Rijksmuseum and pastry chef Cees Holtkamp of Amsterdam did a study into its origins. A couple different recipes in old VOC (United East Indies. Co.) documents showed more light on the origins of the 'pepernoot'.

On the outside of the Markthal are a Japanese curry shop and a ramen shop, would be fun to try that out for comparison. Inside are an all-you-can-eat sushi shop and Asian supermarket.
Close by are also a small Japanese specialty shop (Pannekoekstraat) and Japanse themed store (Nishi Market at Meent)

The north sea shrimp are boiled directly on the ship with sea water, that's why they are a bit salty in taste. I love those x3 my favourite fish roll is with the north sea shrimp. There's nothing better than a Krabbenbrötchen for me in that regard. Sadly they are also expensive and if I go to Hamburg I'd have to pay around 10€ for one and sometimes they skimp out on the Krabben. (Sometimes you can get them unpeeled which is a fun TV-snack imo xD)

Hi guys, love to see your video on Rotterdam. I love Rotterdam, yet I avoid the Markthallen because it's so expensive in there. The peanut butter and pepernoten/ pepernut stores are just tourist traps. The holes in the cheese are not a mistake but are formed during the ripening stage of the cheese. It originates from the Swiss cheese called Emmenthaler. BTW there are lots of good little restaurants in Rotterdam. 🙂

Majority of Rotterdam is kind of "character-less" (all new buildings) as it was levelled during WWII, but there is a small part of the city that was spared. The best way to see it is to take a boat from Hotel New York to the old part of Rotterdam. Of course you could do it by foot as well, just not as special.
It is very common to have a cold fish platter with the Dutch shirmps, smoked eels, crab/surimi salad, egg salad and smoked makerel served with an assortiment of bread as a festive meals, such as on Sinterklaas or Christmas. It also makes a very nice easy partyy platter for anytime of the year.

1:55 both of you are technically correct. It can be considered a gravy but it all starts with a roux. Both are however also incorrect as it is not "just a roux" (which is just flower and butter). It is also not really a gravy but a Salpicon (the actual name for the filling) which is similar to a gravy but tends to have more body.
3:37 That is a dud (or "losse flodder" in Dutch), a proper vendor with replace that one for you.
4:20 It is not that hard of a word now, is it? :P btw, lekker means so much more than just delicious. It is the same as the word gezellig, we use it for many many things. Food can be lekker, the weather can be lekker, even going out can be lekker. Ladies/Gentlemen can be lekker, temperature can be lekker. In Dutch one might say that it has "a thousand applications and you know just a few, lekker puh" "Puh" in itself... no meaning. "Lekker puh" however is said to express a form of sarcasm.
Unless I missed it I haven't seen you both in Utrecht or Den Haag, the other two major cities (Major...... whahahaha). As someone from Utrecht I can't tell you if Den Haag is worth going (But I am pretty sure it is absolutely worth going) but I can tell you that visiting Utrecht (or our smaller sister Amersfoort, Shoutout to the reading keietrekkers) is a unique experience.
6:22 tbh, this is fairly unique in the Netherlands as well.
7:38 uhm no... Jong Belegen (slightly matured) is in between Jong (Young) and Belegen (Matured). Not between Belegen and Old (extra matured).
8:25 also not a correct explenation, it has nothing to do with "air". During the making of the cheese a Lactic Acid bacteria is used. This bacteria eats the milksugars which causes it to "fart", these farts are what causes the holes. A famous joke
Mum: Be sure to share the cheese with your sister
Me: I did, I did, I took the cheese and gave her the holes
Gouda Kaas: Many people think it is called that because it is made in Gouda. Although there might be cheesemakers in Gouda, this is not the reason for the name. The reason for the name is the Cheese Market where all the cheese from the region is sold. Cheesemongers from "the olden days" would travel to Gouda and buy there cheesewheels there, marketing it as Gouda cheese. The name stuck and is now worldfamous. Edam is another famous Cheesemarket with cheese named after it. I remember a time where there was "Alkmaarder" at the cheesemonger. Alkmaar is the town with the oldest and most famous of all cheesemarkets in the world. I don't see that name anymore in the shops though.
14:31 flashes of 80's "Shrimp Cocltail" horror flashing in my brains....brrr (shrimp in a wineglass smothered in coctail sauce)
14:50 another word for "Paling" used in Dutch is "Aal". It is the same fish but Aal used to be the name given for the fatter eels. Don't know if this is still the case though.
16:00 Kibbeling used to be made with Cod, However with rising prices nowadays, many fishmongers opt to use pollack instead. There is hardly any difference in taste. The sauce is probably Ravigotte sauce. made with Mayonaisse, Mustard, Capers, gurkings, chive, dragon and parsley.
The Ladies did very well albeit with some errors in explenation. I don't blame them though. Especially if youu can't eat certain things or don't eat them often.

      1:55 Another word is "ragout".
6:22 Every turkish//middle eastern/morocan shop or toko has these spices, just not displayed in that way. Probably for hygiene reasons.
