  • A rather curious tale about how I was almost recruited into a 'Mastermind Group' that uses Amway (a multi-level marketing company, MLM) to generate cashflow. I explain the vetting process of the group, and my reasons for turning down this opportunity.
    I know there is a lot of anti-MLM content on YT, and others are all for it. I try to remain impartial on the subject and weigh up the opportunity in the context of my own life.

    You're very perceptive - multilevel marketing companies like Amway have a 99% failure rate. You spend a ton of money and when you're not succeeding, you're told you need a better mindset, which costs more. It truly is a deceptive scheme disguised as a business. Thanks for helping raise public awareness!

      @@therichfailure Check out the small business administration. MANY other businesses have a far better success rate than MLM. Network Marketing isn't the only business that has a low start up cost. For instance, a CZcams content creator.
      I made it to the top 1/10 of 1 percent in MLM and defended the industry for years, so if you are in MLM at present, all I can say is: keep a profit and loss statement and have everyone in your organization do the same. If you're really daring, read Robert Fitzpatrick's book, Ponzinomics.

    Thank you so much for this, I'm literally going through this now! It's been 'marketed' to me as a mentor group / personal development group (not sure if it's Amway or not). I've been approached by a trusted individual who said they were going to quit their job in a few months thanks to this, I was impressed too. I was given the exact same e-book to read this weekend but I've just had this 'gut' feeling the whole time that something about this was ...scammy. Instead of products, this one was something to do with helping franchises.
    I've got a 'follow up' meeting about this tonight and all the meetings have been really forced on me, I didn't know what I was saying yes to really. I even when I said I was literally away on that day for a meeting and he was very adamant to make it. I'm going to push back vehemently now and make sure the meeting tonight is the last. I feel quite annoyed that I've been poached and seen as an 'easy target' but I'm so glad for people like you for putting this out there so I've been informed and dodged a bullet!

      The problem with most people (Academically Educated) is that they narrow their options to Doctors, Engineers, Lawers, or general employees. What they are not told in schools and collages is that these professions cannot get you financial freedom. You can spend money to get educated and get a degree.
      But learning people skills, mentoring people, selling skills and leadership skills cannot be learned from these institutions and there is no degree for these skills. The result is your certificate.
      Amway is a platform where we invite people who are fed up doing the same thing their entire life and are ready to invest a few years in changing their mindset and direction in life.
      You can choose to see the big picture and work for financial freedom in spite of rejections and criticisms.
      Or you can choose to continue doing the same thing and going the same direction you are in.
      Albert Einstein defined "Insanity" as "Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
      Your next 5 years will never be the same as your last 5 years. It can be better or worse.
      Amway is an option that many of us used. You may choose differently.
      We are OK with that. But the question is are you OK with what you might get in the next 5 years?

    It's Amway's way of selling products, to sell mostly to the people who sign up for being an IBO. For the most part most people in the business don't sell retail to customers and push the products to those who get into the business instead. The retail prices for most of Amway's products are not competitive at all, so it's hard to find retail customers. They don't tell you that when they are trying to "recruit" you, naturally. You can't just open up an Amway store and hang a sign out, it's against the rules! It would be a tough sell anyway as customers would be few and far between due to the high prices for the products. If I wanted a business selling things, and can't open a store up, well.... that's not for me.

    Almost half the time I go grocery shopping somewhere such as Walmart or Target, someone comes up to me trying to recruit me into this. I’m a college student so that makes me a perfect target for these people. The conversation always goes the exact same way, it always starts with a compliment about something I’m wearing and then it goes on about their mentors and them wanting to set up meetings and all that. I almost fell for it the first time and even joined one of their zoom meetings but luckily I did my research before it was too late. I also work in retail and so that makes even more of these people come up to me. I’ve always tried to be kind and respectful but the problem has gotten really bad and I lose more of my patience every time I encounter one of these people. The Amway infestation has gotten really bad in the Phoenix, Az metro area!

      It absolutely is astonishing! BUT! When you actually learn the history and understand how wildly corrupt everything is, it definitely makes more sense. Amway has VERY deep political ties (DeVos family) and spend millions in lobbying to keep the MLM business model “legal” and virtually regulation free. Even in 2022, they don’t even have to follow the “business opportunity rule” (which seems like it was literally written for an MLM model if you read through it- it’s absolutely baffling!). The fact that franchises have extremely strict rules and regulations and MLMs don’t for example tells you everything you need to know! Money, power and greed have kept them “legal” and it all stems from Amway specifically.

    • @TheRealStevenBritton
      @TheRealStevenBritton Před rokem +2

      @@kimr6482 When you look at it completely technically, there's nothing different from the Amway business model and any other business - you buy a product from a wholesaler, and then sell it at a profit. That's the base, underlying business model. Where you get tripped up is you get presented the opportunity as a case of "selling to yourself" (they might use different terms, like "shop at your own store," but it's essentially the same). Now, in principle, it makes sense - if you owned Walmart, would you shop at Target? However, what happens is the focus then immediately shifts from developing a product-focus business into a recruiting-focused business, where, instead of moving product, you're focusing on finding new people to join your "team" and then "shop at their own store."
      The point is, it's the recruiting aspect of Amway that turns people off. Those "in" tend to become like sharks - always looking for that "next" person to recruit.
      -Can- someone make a lot of money in Amway? Probably. - WILL - someone make a lot of money in Amway? Probably not.

    personally it makes me quite sad that there are people who go about the Amway business in this way (the cult-vibes I mean). I joined Amway just over a year ago & it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I never went through a vetting process and my upline was transparent about everything right from the get-go. The people in my line of sponsorship are literally amazing, and it's stories like this that make me realise how fortunate I am to be in a team of Amway where the people are genuine and transparent about what they do and how they make their money. It's definitely not for everyone but if you commit to it and take advice from your upline it's so worth it, and a viable way to make stable income long-term income. Too often people forget that you have to spend money to make money, and obviously this business model won't be viable for everyone (especially if you're not already spending this type of money on a monthly basis, but if you are, the products are amazing quality if you know what you're getting).

If you dont believe in your business it already failed. You also didnt mention any of the team building which is the best way to increase your revenue. Your mindset has to understand that your building your business by helping others. If your focused just on the money then yes its not for you. Im part of a mentor group where the people are excellent, good hearted caring people. Their passionate about what they do and that type of energy is contagious. Therefore ill say like my mentor told me threes 3 types of people. Those who just get it once thye hear what its all about and what is being offered. Second, the one who has a bunch of questions. Third, the one who just thinks is a pyramid scheme not knowing all businesses technically work like one but at least with Amway I dont get paid for who i recruit or nor do i take money out of the pocket of someone underneath me. I went through the exact same startup process 3 years ago. I had debt issues with my property about a year ago and had to remove myself from the MLM because it wasn't financially sustainable for my personal circumstances. I think that the reality is that you need to be really good at selling and know how to persuade people to make any decent income within an MLM program. I just don't have the personality type to persuade people and when I was a car salesman for 5 months I always felt guilty closing a deal by pressuring people. Like everyone else I want to make a side income but I want to do it without having to sell an idea or dream to people. In summary I think very few people will find success with these MLMs but the majority will definitely not.

      It doesn’t matter how good you’re at selling or convincing people. You’re always at the bottom of the pyramid, which probably already has thousands of people in the upline stream above you (remember, this book by Kiyosaki says that you need to have 500 or more to be considered a business). Why pyramid schemes are illegal is that at one point, when there are millions of people in this, there are simply not enough people left in the world that you can recruit and so you cannot make an earning at the bottom, while the top guy, who actually does nothing, lives the dream. Once you’re recruited, there is no mentoring or guidance as you’re no longer important to them. They’ll spend time on finding a new fool for their downline.

      It’s MLM. You have to recruit people to make money. After 1 year you pay $132 each month in fees. Based on the information I have, you start off making about $43 a month, this jumps to about $300 a month after recruiting 6 people. And the Amway products are very expensive. I don’t know why anyone would stop shopping at Target to pay triple at Amway. Anyways, I declined.

It was hard though because many of the good principles of "working hard" and "surrounding yourself with good people" make sense and I liked. But the numbers were no good.

    • @helenan866
      @helenan866 Před měsícem

      You cannot sell amway products in wallmart, it is against their code of conduct, it's encouraged to sell directly. It isn't advised to buy in bulk because they don't want it to be a huge financial investment upfront, therefore accessible for anyone to start. I have seen some amway business owners start their own servicing business such as skin consultations, health consultations, personal training, etc where they promote and sell amway products. Seems to me like the most effective way to develop an amway retail business, i met a girl who completely replaced her job income this way. Of course to gain financial freedom and passive income, you'd need to "select" and teach others to do the same.

    Amway works. Like any other business you could start, it takes money to make money. It’s hard to maintain the business if you don’t have a lot of money to spare, at least until you start seeing actual profit results. Like she said, they’ll tell you, “it’s money you already spend” but if you don’t spend that money already then you’re using extra money you don’t have to spare. If you take what your mentor tells you and actually apply it, things work. The people who do well have learned the business and know how to run it well, listen to them. The only problem is that your main source of money is based on people and their willingness to join your team. That’s where the real profit is. It’s harder to make profit off of sales than it is to make profit off of team growing incentive.

Network Marketing is just a cheaper start up way to get in . The other two take a lot of capital to start. There is professional development in all 3 except corporate you coming up with the systems. Any business you have have to produce revenue. Business systems goals is to do this , but also look for people who want to buy in. Develop Customer & Clients and Business.. the same thing Walmart Does .. you can buy into the Walmart system if you meet there objectives. Ie - send $5 to the person at the top of the list and remove them; add you name to the bottom of the list, and send the list out to X number of people. (Chain letter). That's a true pyramid scheme.
