He Went from Evangelical to Catholic

  • Brother Lawrence grew up as an evangelical Protestant, and became Catholic after accepting the hard answers to the questions he had. When he was twelve he moved from Colorado to Papua New Guinea with his parents, who were Pentecostal missionaries. Through his teen years, his openness to learn new things led him back to the U.S. to attend Brown University, which he said was a bigger culture shock than being a missionary in a foreign country. He started to feel this weight on his shoulders, the weight of other people’s questions he could not answer.
This is how the Catholic Faith “snuck up” on him. He spent some time in the Middle East, and the questions became more and more pressing. Through research, he noticed he was in a crisis because he identified with the beliefs of the Catholic Church more than with his own evangelical upbringing. At this time, the following Gospel verse was reassuring to him:
“And Peter answered him, ‘Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water’” (Matthew 14:28).
He faced his fear and became Catholic, which was like going to a foreign country at first. Eventually, he came to know that it was in fact Jesus who was bidding him to join the Church.

The world's longest running Ponzi Scheme. The church takes money promising something it cannot deliver, that is attaining Heaven. No trinity worshiper can enter Paradise. There is One God and one mediator, not a panel of three equal god persons. The "holy ghost" is an invention of MAN inserted illegally into the Bible by 1700 years of papal tampering. It will cost you your soul to call on multiple entities and names of dead people you imagine are listening to you and watching your life since they died and were elected saints by creatures below. Mary is a name that appears 18 times, she is the unwed mother who is nobody divine. Mary was made divine by man in the 6th century. Giving money to crooks is all you're doing.

I was raised baptist/non-denominational and never thought I would part from that. Last year I decided I need to take my young boys to church. My husband who was baptized catholic and went on and off as a child, asked that I take them to a Catholic Church(he now comes with us after much prayer by me at mass) and I said ok. I hadn’t practiced any faith really in years. I went there thinking I would get nothing out of it and I’m just trying this once. Let me tell you the Lord works in wonderful ways! I left there feeling full of the Holy Spirit and knew I was home. I’m planning to convert and have my boys do their sacraments as well this year. I feel so blessed to have my faith in Jesus back. I pray more now (usually the Rosary) more than I have in 20 years probably. I feel I truly have a personal relationship with Jesus again. I’m so glad I allowed God to show himself to me in an unfamiliar place.

@Proverbs 30:5-6 Galatians 1:6-12 For someone who puts these two verses in their profile names, you should've known that Galatians is the first canonic new testament letter coming from Saint Paul (about 48-55 AD). When he talks about the genuine gospel, he referred to the Septuagint, the Hebrew Old Testament which included the 7 Deuterocanonical books (it's the Bible that the Apostles brought everywhere to teach, the standard Bible of the people that time). The New Testament itself isn't written yet. The earliest Gospel of Jesus comes from Saint Mark which was written in 65 AD or later, and we added the other canonical books around that time or even later than that. Please take context in your reading of The Bible, Saint Paul talked about the Deuterocanonical books as part of the gospel in that, along with the stories in the oral tradition itself. And the Proverbs verses, well you can figure it out yourself if it's added or have been there since forever.

Example, I watched CZcams on a Catholic priest Gabriele Amorth an expert supposedly was sincere in trying to help others but I believe he was a deceived man and his approach to exorcisms were not real though his experiences were. Roman catholic priest first of all are not real offices of the real church and their method of dealing with exorcism is NOT BIBLICAL and a dangerous deception by the things their trying to cast out. Idols or phoney rights will not help you , only Jesus by His name and the Holy Spirit can expel a demon from a afflicted or oppressed person. You don't need Holy water which is improperly being used, phoney religious rites, medallions, gnostic rosery , scapulas, or idols or crucifixes. All you need is to just have faith in the real Lord Jesus of the New Testament and be walking a sanctified repented Holy Spirit empowered life that follows the New Testament Jesus and scriptures.

Funny you mention Fr. Amorth. I noticed the depth and fullness of Catholic theology, when I was opressed by demonic forces. I'm not going in to that here, let me just say. Baptist teaching feels like a watered down version of the Early Apostolic Church. Though still a Baptist...

God is tied to His word brother Jesus is the Word in carnet and God is word is perfect and eternal. The English version I believe is translated to the best as it can be for the different mindsets but you got to remember modern English did not exist 200 years ago but I believe God uses it and has full control. The Lord knows what He is doing even if we don't fully understand yet. Roman Catholicism has little to no hermeneutical concept of scripture. It also alienates Jewish people, instead of sharing the real gospel and it oppreseses real born again believers. Illumination cannot come from a denomination, man or religion only by the Lord through the power of the Holy Spirit as 1 Corinthians 2 and John 14 and 16 describe. I was a raised Roman Catholic but always kinda knew it was not right. As I got older and researched our faith I realized and believe the Lord pointed out that Rome is a apostate church that went rouge from the original New Covenant teachings and church. I was demonically oppressed to brother and it's only by Lord Jesus who helped me by the Grace and Mercy of God and only He can keep you. I've also worked at a rescuer mission ran by born again brethren and came across demon possesion but like you to much to get into. One thing I will tell you is that you don't need no phoney rites or unbiblical methods to deal with them. Simply just walking a right life and faith in Jesus and or by the power of His Holy name and Spirit they will flee.
Don't give up born again bible Christianity it is the real path but it's is being viciously spiritual attack so don't get discouraged. Apostle Paul and Apostle John apparently delt with the same issues in their days.
Baptist denomination is branch of the real new Testament church in my opinion or originally known as Anna Baptist. They are very good teachers and are born again believers but lack spiritual discernment on Pneumatology because of their cessationist Calvinists views they have been taught is my observation.
God bless in Jesus and don't loose FAITH

To my knowledge, Menonites come from anabaptists, Baptists have their roots in England. The anabaptist connection is a myth some baptists like... Well, that's not important .

I converted because after a man slipped ketamine in my water bottles and I was overdosed against my awareness, I have had mental instability since. I suffer hallucinations, delusions and dissociation of my body now and the medications they put me on for schizophrenia exasperated my mental condition, because I have the MTHFR gene defect, which means I'm more sensitive to meds and often get side effects instead of the desired effect.
Considering all these medications failed me, I would repeatedly turn to God and things would get better for a time. But then when I was better I would stop praying or going to church and just do whatever I want again. I did that like 5 or 6 times, before I accepted I need God all the time, not just for Him to conveniently heal me so I could continue sinning. This mental disorder is lifelong and just as well I am dependent on God for that lifelong healing. One woman explained to me that my mental disorder is actually a blessing because it's bringing me closer to God. Again, hard to accept, but true.
So, I committed to going to church at a Pentecostal church every Sunday and sometimes Thursdays. I love that they're very passionate, but speaking in tongues turned out to be a bad experience for me. Some people think speaking in tongues brought them closer to God, but for me it made my mental condition worse.
Around the time I was overdosed I also met a man who gave me a Pieta Prayer book that you can get from mej.com ... these were Catholic prayers and these prayers were most effective in combating my mental illness.
In consideration of all that, I started researching Church history and realized the Pentecostals are pretty unrealistic in their interpretations, no offense to them. I love them, but I need to be apart of the true Church, which is obviously the Catholic Church.
I've converted last Easter Vigil and I love communion and confession. Whenever Protestants try explaining the Bible to me, I explain it right back. I'm not willing to forgo my moral consciousness or obligation to speaking truth just to earn their approval. I warn them often that many things they believe and preach is heresy and blasphemy. I pray the Holy Spirit will humble them and move them towards the true Church. God bless!

eric bastian The Church, from the very Beginning…was Catholic!
Posted by KENNETH HENDERSON on AUGUST 12, 2016
They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers. ~ Acts 2:42
Many “Bible Alone” Christians will say that the Church of the Bible looks nothing like the Catholic Church. If that were true, then we would expect to find evidence of the first few hundred years of Christianity to support this claim. However, what we do find is evidence to show that the Early Church was indeed Catholic in every way! Many Protestants claim that the Church of the first three centuries was a “pure” Church and base that on a modern reading of Acts 2:42, ignoring that writings of the earliest Christians. They will also claim that it was only after the legalization of Christianity by Roman Emperor Constantine (313 AD) did the Church become “Catholic” and corrupt. However, the doctrines of Post-Constantine Catholicism are the same doctrines that were held by Christians for the preceding three centuries. In fact, the evidence below clearly shows that the beliefs of the Early Church are the same as those of the Catholic Church today in the 3rd millennium.
Again, The Early Church Fathers are so important because: 1) their testimonies prove that the Early Church was Catholic; 2) the councils of Trent and Vatican I declared that no-one may interpret Scripture in a manner contrary to the unanimous consent of the Fathers; 3) all the Fathers were convinced that the original texts of the Bible were absolutely immune from all error. IF, Catholic doctrine had changed “many times” from that of the earliest writings, then the record should reflect this. However, the record shows that the writings of the Early Church Fathers are consistent with the teachings of the modern Catholic Church. Nothing has changed! This is why the councils of Trent and Vatican I attest that the writings of the Early Church are to be regarded as authoritative in respect to the interpretation of scripture. Any interpretation of scripture cannot be in conflict of the testament of the unanimous teachings of Early Church on doctrine. Again, let me clarify…doctrines are those teachings from scripture that deal with items of Faith and Morals, not practices, customs and disciplines which so many anti-Catholics try to say are doctrines. Example, Baptism by sprinkling vs immersion, this is a practice.
The early Church was the Catholic Church. It taught infallibly, gave us the New Testament and was made up of three ranks of clergy, bishop, priest and deacon. The idea of “Scripture Alone” didn’t exist nor could it have as the printing press would not be invented for more than a thousand years. The earliest Christians didn’t even have a New Testament yet. It was a NEW Church. They had to rely upon verbal teaching that was passed down from the Apostles as Paul says in 2 Thessalonians 2:15.
Stand firm, then, brothers, and keep the traditions that we taught you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. (2 Thessalonians 2:15)
Before there was a Bible, there was a Church…
To make sure that the apostolic tradition would be passed down after the deaths of the apostles, Paul also told Timothy, “What you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also“ (2 Tim. 2:2). In other words, he was telling Timothy that it was necessary to keep the traditions and teachings alive. Yes, he was writing letters, but every place a church had been established did not instantly get a copy of those letters. It would take many, many years before they all would be compiled into what we now know as the New Testament. No written Bibles as we know them today existed. This is important to understand.
In the first four centuries of the Church many books, such as the seven letters of Ignatius, the Letter of Clement [the fourth pope] to the Corinthians, the Didache, and The Shepherd were revered by many Christians as inspired but were later shown to be non-inspired. Keep in mind, non-inspired does not imply not important or not authoritative, it just means that they did not see that those writings to be on level with the inspired writings of the Apostles.
The Bible as we know it today didn’t come into being until the Councils of Hippo and Carthage. That is when the Catholic Church defined which books made it into the New Testament and which didn’t. There were many letters and writings that were floating around and they saw a need to settle which were to be considered as inspired, which were important but not inspired, and which were even heretical. The council fathers studied many documents, including, of course, the writings of the Apostles themselves, but it was not until these councils that the Church officially settled the issue of what should be included in the Canon of Scripture.

My parents were also missionaries who moved my sister and I to Papua New Guinea when I was 4-9 years old. I grew up from that point in Florida, met my husband, he spoke with me about pursuing the Catholic faith-also for questions that the Assemblies of God and Baptist faiths could not answer-and then we made the giant leap of faith to come into the Church. It’s good to be home. Thank you for sharing!

Well said! I’m publishing a weekly CZcams video on episodes from the life of Don Bosco, entitled ST JOHN BOSCO by JOE ZAMMIT. In this series I’m narrating events and miracles from the splendid life of Don Bosco. St John Bosco used to perform a miracle almost every day, through the intercession of Mary Help of Christians. From the lives of saints we can learn how to love God more and draw closer to him. Thank you.

Luke 5:3 - Jesus teaches from Peter’s boat which is metaphor for the Church. Jesus guides Peter and the Church into all truth.
Luke 5:4,10 - Jesus instructs Peter to let down the nets for a catch, and the miraculous catch follows. Peter, is the “fisher of men.”
John 21:2-3,11 - Peter leads the fishing and his net does not break. The boat (the “barque of Peter”) is a metaphor for the Church.

Something I heard that struck me as interesting. When they pulled up the nets, the catch was described as 153 fish. There was a Roman book of natural sciences (written by Pliny the Elder, I think?) which identified 153 types of fish. So I'm not sure if anyone knows, but the speculation was the universality of this catch, if it could pull in one of every type.

I like that! I like how he said God’s reaching out to everyone. We really only see His grace later or if we want to. I think of all those people who choose not to believe or don’t want to see Him or plain don’t see Him working in their lives. I say this with the utmost respect and love, that’s so sad. I was that person. God was working in my life ALL along, I only really saw or payed attention when I sought out that relationship with Him.

Evangelicals and other types of Christians have SO much to offer - especially when it comes to having a personal relationship with JESUS through your heart. I wish that they were able to share this aspect of Christianity (and really, Catholicism) in the Catholic Church. Protestants pointed out valid issues in the church, but it didn’t mean that the Catholic Church was wrong - just the way humans were implementing it, and the solution was not to break up Christianity!
I wish other Christians could see why we ultimately should stick with the earliest “Christian” churches that we know of - those are most connected to Jesus. These new sects sow division in the body of Christ, even if we are all still one body
