    Hi~ I am so glad I found you! I am almost 70 years old and I collect Beautiful stones and Beach Glass from the shores of Lake Michigan and I have tried really hard to learn to wire wrap so I can make things for myself and family and have had such trouble following the tutorials and handling the wire~ I have arthritis in my hands so that makes it harder for me ~ Thankyou so much for such a great informative tutorial that I can actually understand and follow ~ I love Simple Elegance and you do this well!!! I find so many natural cabochon shaped stones from Lake Michigan and want to wrap them and with this wonderful tutorial I think I can do it!!! Thankyou so very much you are a great teacher!

      Interesting design!. Thanks for your excellent instructions on the video. I'll check out your other videos. Many years ago I used to make sterling silver (soldered) jewelry with cabachons I had cut/shaped & polished. Now want to try something different.

    Hello Jim, since two years I'm wire wrapping earrings and pendants using natural stones and cristals with holes because I did not know how to secure cabochons. Discovered the tutorials on CZcams and made a few things following my own instinct. But now I saw in your work what I was looking for : assymetric pieces built in a simple though strong way. Thanks to you, your teaching skills, I now know that it's possible. Thus : many sincere thanks!!!
    Btw : to hold the stone in place in order to measure the teeth if the prongs, you simply can tape the stone to the back and after having marked, cut and polished the prongs, just remove the tape. It should ease that part of your work.
    Just gratedul to have found you on the internet!

    I have been wire wrapping for years and I have a number of different techniques up my sleeve. But I have never seen anything like this, and I liked it. I don't often work with prong settings, but I can see how the same technique could be used in other ways without prongs. Thank you for taking the time to show meticulously show how it is done. You have a great talent for attention to detail, and I appreciate that.

    Hey Jim! I watched your pendant tutorial and I loved it! For me, it qualifies as a stumbled upon moment cuz when I found your channel, it was well... by accident. I'm a 65yo silversmith/lapidarist. I'm largely self taught and took the justly earned moniker "Stonebutcher" after slaughtering many, many wanna be cabs at my wheels. For years now, I've wanted to learn REAL wire smithing but I never thought much of the skill levels [or lack here-of] demonstrated by many who display their wire smithing prowess. And so, I never picked it up. Anyway, I spotted your tutorial and by it's conclusion, I was hooked!! As it happens, recently I blew chunk of hard earned change on silver wire and sheet stock. Talk about fortuitous timing?! OH! I nearly forgot! I have a couple suggestions to hold those slippery cabs in place. Painters tape. I've heard of a fellow who uses said tap to keep all his pieces/parts from flying all over creation... pretty cool idea if you ask me. The other idea, keeping in mind I've never seriously tried wire smithing, what would you think of using hot glue? Just a little dab'll do ya! How many recognize that bit of shameless age referencing?! You keep 'em coming [your vids] Jim. Meanwhile, I'll keep watching just keep gettin' better and better! I guess that's a wrap! Thanks Jim.

      Thank you so much Nancy. It's interesting that you should say that about soldering. The Wiresmithing technique actually was born from the way that soldered jewelry looked. I thought that instead of soldering at certain points, a strong wire wrap could be used. I played around with a few ideas and came up with this simple yet effective technique. I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

    Sorry to necro post my comment, but I just found your channel today! Excellent content! I'll add that a pair of divider calipers are great for scoring soft metal. Secure the stone by wrapping your painter's tape around the stone and the wiring, then set the divider tool to 4mm - then easily score each prong.

As for wire in the UK, that one is a little tricky. I've been doing some research on the subject because I've found that it isn't as easy to get as it is in the states. One supplier that I've found is CooksonGold (www.cooksongold.com/Wire/-Alloy=Silver_Wire/-Shape=0/-Dimension=0/-Type=Sterling_Silver/&prdsearch=y&show=N) they seem to be imilar to Rio Grande here in the States. Fun Fact - I've recently found out that in the states we call it 'Half Round Wire' and in the UK they refer to it as "D Shaped wire'...interesting. I hope this helps.

In all that time not ONE Jim McIntosh tutorial came up. Finally - a look similar to mine from someone who is even using dremel tools. Sweet glory! where have you been? Why oh why didn't you tube give you to me sooner? And this type of teaching....allows for me to do my own thing easily. The technique doesn't get in the way of personal stylization. Thx. A bunch. Cp

    Hi Jim. Really enjoying this video, thanks for sharing. I have a dremel flex shaft which came with a few tools. Are you able to say what numer tool the silicone rubber polisher is please. I am going to have a go at this with some of my sea glass and see if I can manage to make something nice using your techniques. I am a fairly new beginner so wish me luck!

    Hi Jim, I like your tutorials. I'm a retired tool and die maker and have been collecting agates and jaspers in Oregon for about 40 years. Soon after I began tumbling these stones and now that I'm retired I wanted to do something with these beautiful stones. I've been wire wrapping for about a month now but tumbled stones are a lot harder to wrap than cabs. I'd like to send you some pictures of my work for you to critique, how can I get these photos sent to you? Thanks, Lee

    I love your designs and traching me to be profeshional . Would shorter prongs work well too or just using the rubber buffer to make them appear smaller work ?

    • @JimMcIntosh
      @JimMcIntosh  Před 4 měsíci

      You don't need to use the rubber polishing wheel on the prongs. I just like to use it to shape the prongs and take off any rough edges. You have to be very careful on how short you make the prongs. You want to be sure that the stone is secured in the setting. Play around with the length of your prongs until you find the length that you like and that supports the stone securely. Thank you for the question, and thank you for watching.

    Once you mark one prong couldn't you measure the marked prong from the bend to the mark and then remove the cabochon and mark the rest without the cabochon set in the prongs? That way you wouldn't have to hold it all together while marking the remaining prongs.

      Yes I am. You can use any metal that you would like. I would probably avoid filled or plated wire unless you are ok with exposing the base metal underneath. After all, you would be wrapping over the exposed are. It's all up to you.
