Back in the day the Android fanboys (mostly but not just Samsung users) were quite negative about the M7 being the "iPhone 5 of Android", because it focused more on fancy design and lacked a removable battery and microSD slot. Poor marketing is one thing but at the time HTC did worse than even LG to appease the Android core users.

    Having worked at HTC from 2010 to 2013 doing go to market (GTM)marketing, I would agree with you on a lot of these things, especially on management. HTC management was so f××ked up, undermining how great the product was. I launched about 20 phones for HTC at the time, mainly for the t-mobile account, from the HTC Sensation 4G (fun fact, Peter Chou wanted to call the phone the Passion 4G, I sort of overrode him on that awful name), a bunch of mytouch devices, the Wildfire S, the HTC ONE S and X and the Amaze 4G (sad to see it was mentioned in the video as one of the phones with poor naming convention).
    I left for Samsung and helped launch the GS4 and Note3 in the US. While the company operations was much more professional, but I definitely felt more like a cog in a machine than the control I had at HTC.

It was probably my favorite phone ever because I'll never be as good at typing on a touchscreen as I am with tactile buttons. Paradoxically, though, even though the HTC Arrive was perfect for texting, for some reason it was incapable of splitting up SMS messages into multiple parts. Other Windows Phone 7 devices at the time could do this, so I never understood the limitation.

    @tr48092 Před rokem +11

    I worked for HTC technical support from 2009 through 2014 and i can tell you there is even more to this story. Many of their flagship phones during that error had numerous problems with hardware or software that drove off loyal customers. For example, the Evo has several OS updates that erased user data or made them unusable. The HTC One had a horrible issue with purple tinted photos in low light. The company knew it was a hardware issue but refused to admit it to customers, trying to patch it with software updates. The screens in those early phones were quite susceptible to cracking, which was not covered by thr warranty until 2014. The warranty, even for covered issues, required users to mail their phone to a repair center in Texas and be without it for weeks. The repair center, like other aspects of the company, was poorly managed. The did not follow a first in, first out policy, leading to some customers phones sitting there for over year, by which point the company was no longer making spare parts for them. We had hundreds of customers that had to be notified that their phone they had mailed to us over a year before was unfixable. They hired a terrible PR firm to design their website and they completely botched it. Most phones only had a Spanish copy of the user manual listed. HTC was poorly managed and that's why it fell apart

    I was and Android early adopter and owned the Hero and the One S. What frustrated me about HTC was the lack of android updates once the phone was over 6 months old. This was when Android was evolving really fast (e.g. 1.5 to 1.6 saw the introduction of turn by turn navigation). Also it meant important security updates. However HTC were really slow or non-committal about providing any updates, instead they spammed the market with new models. So in 2014 I jumped ship to Google, I'm sure many other of their customers also left for this reason. Releasing three models of phone a year and providing excellent support has been a successful model for google.

    HD2 is still my favorite phone ever, it was an absolute beast and revolutionary at the time. It had the most active development community of any phone ever released, I think you could load something like 6 or 7 different OSes on it including a full Linux build. I had so much fun modding it back in the day, I still remember the anticipation and anxiety I felt firing up MAGLDR and holding my breath until it passed the "GO GO GO!" screen. Manually adjusting the partition sizes in notepad to allot enough memory to make my custom ROM run better. It's the phone that got me into Android funnily enough- first the XDA devs figured out how to run Android off the SD card, then NANDroid builds came out which could be flashed over Windows. Hands-down best dev phone ever! I used to get a lot of attention back then for having a "huge phone" too. Hard to imagine that 4.3 inches used to be considered huge lol. I just picked another one up on ebay, it's not really usable as a daily driver anymore and most of the links for modding resources have gone dead, but I just wanted to have it for my nostalgic phones collection.

      The MBA mentality kills companies. You need engineers with business sense running companies. If you look at the companies that continuously provide growth and competitive edge, those companies have corporate boards full of engineers and highly value their engineering teams. When Apple first started out, when layoffs were required, they fired their marketing teams, HR, and business development teams. They kept all the engineers, that's because it's the engineers who actually create value. These business development teams are effectively dead weight until you have a good product to actually sell. Companies in decline, that only care about quarterly profit, are the ones who fire their engineering teams and protect their friends in business development.

    I was lucky enough to grow up with several HTC phones in my early to mid teens, and I couldn't have been happier. My first HTC was Desire S. It was absolutely trash in it's performance, but the charm and the UI made me get a Sensation XL next, when you got beats solo's along with the phone. This for me is the phone that first gave some real premium feeling. The half metal/aluminium removable back was a completely new feeling, as well as the screen being an entire 4,7 inches, which was massive back then. But of course, when I got the HTC One with that metal unibody, it was a different world. The classiest phone to have ever existed imo, and no other design has ever come close. It's a shame it got so little recognition, and I definitely felt the same way as described in this video when I talked to my friends about it. I remember one of my friends having a HTC back in the day (in the UK), but beyond that I barely heard of them. At the time he had the HTC everyone was raving about the iPhone and it tended to be a case of you were either a Nokia loyalist, sticking to older style phones rather than smart phones, or you spent your time arguing whether iPhone or Blackberry was the best.
    Due to being a Nokia guy, I ended up with a phone that resembled a Blackberry before moving onto Nokia's smartphones when they finally bit the bullet and switched over. I was actually a big fan of their phones with Windows OS, as many of the features it had (and certainly the camera) was far better than the iPhone, but it just never got the support from Microsoft or the public which is why it ended up dying a death.
    I am now on Android as it is the most similar OS to Windows, and like the fact it is less propietary than iOS. My last couple of phones have both been Samsung ones.
    I just don't think HTC ever really got a foothold here. Hell, even my one friend who had one used to rave about it but withing a couple of years he moved to Apple.
