  • Siskel and Ebert reviews an American action film "Point Break" starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves in July 10, 1991. It is a mixed review because Gene gave a marginal thumbs down and thought that the film had a couple of endings, but Roger gave a marginal thumbs up and liked the certain parts of the film, and the strong relationship between Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. I agree with Roger, I enjoyed this film a lot. A marginal thumbs up for me on "Point Break".

Point Break is a great lesson in screenwriting. There are no good guys and bad guys, just people whose actions are driven by their beliefs. It’s that type of nuance that makes movies more than just entertainment, but meaningful. You don’t see enough studio movies like that today.

Ebert understood that each movie is for a certain demographic. His reviews talked about if the movie was any good for the genre and demographic. Siskel only liked certain types of movies and hated if any scene was similar to a movie he liked 25 years ago. That’s why ebert was more liked.

To me, this movie is the dictionary definition of "guilty pleasure." It doesn't aim for the sky, but it's great for what it is. The element of ridiculousness works because the film embraces and really runs with it. So glad they didn't tear it to shreds. Agree with the "couple of endings" comment. I watched it a few months ago and I remember it felt like it was building to an ending about 3 different times in the last half hour and then just kept going. Looks like it's going to end at the failed bank heist... wait, it keeps going. Looks like it'll end with Keanu Reeves and Gary Busey confronting Swazye's crew at the airfield... keeps going. Okay, Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze's confrontation after the skydive sequence is where it'll definitely en... WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE'S ONE MORE FIGHT BETWEEN THE TWO AFTER THAT?!
