Siskel & Ebert - Blue Steel (1990)
Siskel and Ebert reviews an American action thriller film called "Blue Steel" in March 16, 1990. It stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Ron Silver and Clancy Brown. It tells a story a NYPD female police officer, who shoots and kills a robbery suspect on her first day of duty and then becomes involved with a witness of the shooting.
Both Gene and Roger made a split-vote on the movie, with Roger enjoyed it and noting that it is a sophisticated update of John Carpenter's "Halloween", the movie that first made Jamie Lee Curtis a star. What makes it more interesting than yet another sequel to Halloween is the way the filmmakers have fleshed out the formula with intriguing characters and a few angry ideas. Whereas Gene, unfortunately, didn't think it works as he felt that the the plot evolves the serial killer is utterly preposterous.
To me, I agreed with Roger, as I really liked this movie. It was scary, but so exciting. Jamie Lee Curtis is good in the role, and Ron Silver is a really interesting killer. The character of Megan Turner is tough, and smart. But I felt sympathy with her. She had a rough life when she was accused of killing an unarmed man and is subsequently suspended, then she begins dating Hunt, who has become obsessed with her. It's a really good thrilling, dark, and psychological film that the premise does feel like a sophisticated update of "Halloween" rather than another sequel of "Halloween". Though, its increasingly over-the-top story beggars disbelief, but this cop drama is elevated by an appealing cast and Kathryn Bigelow's stylish direction. Thumbs up for me on "Blue Steel".

Ebert tells him to belt the kid across the room... What an jerk you have to be to be a critic. Good grief, what a lousy take. Stallone made an 80s film that encapsulates the failed-trucker father figure. As such, OVER THE TOP should be recognized as the greatest film about a deadbeat Dad who turns things around in cinema history. How many millions of dead-beat trucker dads wanted to do better after watching this?

WRONG AS USUAL…!!! When it came to black films of the 80s and 90s, Siskel and Ebert assumed all movies should be epic. But they failed to understand that most black films had small budgets and producers/directors had no choice but to spend more on the production and actors. Character development requires more production, more actors, more film time. And budgets made all of that impossible. So it was always put on the actors to do a great performance to make the movie memorable. It’s the same rule followed in stage play.

The fellas are being a little rough on this one in retrospect. Yes, it has some notable tropes from that period of film, but this piece of cinema stands the test of time far more than many others that hit the same notes. Hindsight is 20/20, but two thumbs up is two thumbs up.

This movie came out when I was going through that transition of childhood to teenager, and therefore was looking for entertainment with a sharper edge as well as still not understanding why villains fall in love, so I didn’t like it so much (except for Hellfire). Even today I find it rather clunky. I did however love Frollo. That performance was magnificent.

What a couple of losers who can't enjoy one of the top 50 sci-fi movies ever. It combined Indiana Jones with Star Wars and gave an outlet to all our childlike fantasies about the pyramids. It was brilliant fun and people who can enjoy it for having too many unbelievable plot holes are taking themselves WAY too seriously. Let's just compare Star Wars Episode 4 with Star Gate and ask ourselves, which one is more entertaining? Ah, yes I see. A movie review shouldn't be so subjected to the whims of shifting mood. If your criticism is worth anything, it shouldn't reveal to me your insecurities, mood, or how tired you are of your job, or how your review took place smack in the middle of an era of history where there was so much goodness that spoiled little overpaid critics would hate whatever came next if at any point it even hinted at drawing inspiration from the era. Also all the losers in these comments who agree with these two dismissive cads, we are just all so impressed with you, that you are so sophisticated that you could never like such a boring film, such an audacious ruse as this film, such a waste of your superior time. We do thank you for sharing your superior thoughts, just as Siskel & Ebert, so that we can all know what we thought about the movie too. Thank you for your original thoughts, all of you.

I think Ebert is wrong; switchblade sam wouldn't be too disturbing for children, but he is too disturbing for parents and adults. A dirty hobo kidnapping children is comical to kids, they don't understand the reality of the danger of that situation like parents would. Then again, adults understand it's just a movie better than kids. But the reality of that situation is terrifying for parents

During the 90’s black films did not do much character development due to small budget trying to make a really good movie. It was assumed that viewers already understood the character as it was close to characters known in the hood. It was just a different time: sort of like modern blaxploitation type moviemaking. Siskel and Ebert did not get it, as always.

Something Siskel said that interested me was his comment about feeling Peter Pan is your own age, whatever that age is. That reminded me of a quote from the original novel: "Oh no, he [Peter] isn't grown up,' Wendy assured her confidently, 'and he is just my size.' She meant that he was her size in both mind and body; she didn't know how she knew it, she just knew it." (Chapter I, Peter Breaks Through)
