  • In this episode of the squatting series, we arrange to meet Michael (the Squatter) to arrange collection of his items from our property he was squatting in. Michael invites Lia out for dinner as compensation for the gas and electricity bills.
In the last episode, we found out that we cannot dispose of any of his belongings after locking him out of the property without being liable for criminal damage. We had no choice but to head up north and give him his items back face to face.

It's always sad for anyone who is so desperate for a place to stay to break into an unoccupied building, but it shouldn't be legal for them to do so and have the owners of the property spend thousands to get them off it. To be so bold to throw it in your face that he had the right to be there is mind-blowing. They need to update their policies and laws so people can't do that. Also, to provide safe shelters for those who may need them in times of crisis. I hope he sorts himself out and finds a safe place to live and also never does this sort of thing to another person. I suppose since he bragged about being a proper criminal and the police know about him that he will continue to do those sorts of things. Sad for him and sadder for anyone on the receiving end of his improper antics.

I have a buddy that HAD a rental house and a woman moved in and wrote a check for the rent. The check was on a closed account and she knew it was closed. When he confronted her, she pretty much laughed and closed the door. She did this because she knew the laws at that time meant that the homeowner would spend money on lawyers and it would take 3-4 months before the court would tell the police to kick her out.
I say "had" a rental house... after she was gone, he decided to sell the house vs. dealing with renters again. So it's one less rental property on the market because of that troll.

What a nightmare. Here in the U.S. you just get someone to sign a paper making them your tenant, give them keys and have them go into the house, tell the squatters they have legal tenancy and give the squatters a certain amount of hours to get their scrap out or it automatically defaults to be the tenants property. The legal system is useless in these cases and only serve to make you, the owner out to be the criminal. These "squatters" know that and use it to their advantage, but nothing gets their butts moving along quicker than a person in their face telling them to move it or lose it. Love the series and best of luck with the property...its so cute.

First, I want to say, I love the saying on the coffee cup you were drinking from Lia. I did find and watched the Fox news clip. I do not feel right sharing the link in the comment. I'll let you do that. (Oh, wait, I see that you did post it).
Michael is nothing more than a con man. Hopefully this saga is over. Glad you met the neighbors. Good neighbors are a hell of a lot better than a squatter any day. Hope you shared contact info with them so if they see suspicious activity at the house they can let you know. Maybe they can capture a photo of this guy when it collects his stuff.
Oh, BTW, good thing you didn't invite Michael to the wedding. He would never leave!

"Squatting" should never be a thing. If you are on someone else property and do not have permission you are criminally trespassing and the police should forcefully remove you. If you fight back at all then they should be able to use whatever force necessary to remove you. Only in an extremely insane unfair society would we let people steal our property by allowing squatters to stay.

Wow, just wow. Quite the intense sob story he chose. From flirting to inviting you to his court appointment- mad is putting it mildly. As I listened to him with his flirty nonsense, it struck me as his way of grabbing at control. Between trying to make you feel sorry for him and flattery, clearly you would come to his side of things. Did he ever collect his belongings? It seemed like he went from demanding his stuff back to not wanting to "inconvenience you." I not sure he's all that close to you (or if it matters), but, I'd love to see you collaborate with BlackBeltBarrister. His mailing address is in Lichfield.
