I have an irrigation pivot system on my land which of course has a couple of contatctors to control the motors, one of them was supposedly not working and when I checked the continuity of the A1 and A2 terminals it was shorted, later I brought it back to home and noticed it had a white thingy attached on its sized that resembled two reverse zener diodes which were shorted and the coil was actually fine Btw it is a 24v system a couple weeks back I was messing around with the wires and I think I accidentally shorted the 24v system with the 230-380 VAC mains and that caused the zeners to short!

Good explination switching controls, Contactors tend to have arc supression and relays don't
