  • A short SD video of replicas 0-2-2 'Rocket and 2-2-0 'Planet' in action at the Great Central Railway's 'Golden Oldies Weekend' in 2011.
Robert Stephenson built the Rocket for the Rainhill trials of 1829 to select locomotives to run on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway which it won.
The Manchester and Liverpool Railway was the first passenger inter-city railway in the world.
The NRM commissioned the building of a working replica of Rocket for the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in 1980.
When the original Planet was built in 1830 it was the ninth locomotive to be built for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway. It was constructed by Robert Stephenson who had built Rocket but was a major advance on the earlier design. It was the first locomotive to have inside cylinders.
In 1992 a working replica was built by Friends of the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.
