- Cities Skylines Beginners Guide - Overcoming Early Game Challenges | Ep. 2
In Todays Episode, we continue the Cities: Skylines Beginners Guide by going over early game strategies. There are several ways to move on from this starting point, but I wanted to approach this with attention and care as this is a beginner's guide. When starting their cities, traffic is a significant issue for many people, so I first wanted to focus on my strategies around this. Then we begin to expand our road layout and move on to introducing the industry's DLC with a large agricultural area.

I have started so many cities and stopped just because lack of planning. This series is absolute inspiration to people like us.
I know! Every time I start a city I feel like things are going good but as soon as it starts turning into a bigger city, everything turns to shit lol
Happy to help! 😀
I've started a handful myself and quit because I can't fully enjoy the game on console. Why does the premier gaming consoles not even remotely compete with an office tool designed for work? Is it really that terrible to think gaming consoles should wax the floor in every aspect of gaming versus a PC? Like Xbox and Playstation are specifically designed for gaming, but compared to a PC the consoles are like playing an Atari underwhelming for what we pay for the system and all the other pricey extras that more often than not don't even come close to what PC has to offer. If I didn't have children I would trade the console off and start a revolution to either force the consoles to step up or be buried and forgotten.
I understand your frustration. I think the problem though is price. Top tier PC builds right now are about 4000 dollars. Even with Microsoft getting a deal on mass purchases for there consoles if they wanted to build something comparable they would have to sell it for a lot more than what an Xbox costs.
@@CityZilla I don't think the consoles need to keep up with the top tiers, but they should in the very least be equal to if not better than the lower end models. The other thought is what does Microsoft's PC sales have to do with Playstation. Playstation needs to step way up as they have been in the business longer and they are becoming an absolute joke. I used to be willing to die on the Playstation hill. Now it's clear that Cartrige Consoles of old are superior to these new models. My NES still fires right up where as I can't find an OG PS or XBOX that hasn't been refurbished to the point only the shell is original. Pay $700 for a console and get destroyed by kids on a $400 Walmart computer. My $700 should be competitive in every aspect with the cheapo PC .
Man this series is a blessing, I was having so many issues with my cities and after watching just the first episode I was already able to start a new city much more streamlined and realistic. I kept having issues with traffic and bottle necks which would spiral to emergency responders and Hurst's not being able to get to the people.
Traffic can be really tricky in this game. Even with the most efficient layouts
This whole series is the holy grail for C:S beginners. I also love your attention to details and the realism you bring to every scenario and even the role-playing and backstories. Like, you look at it more as a RPG rather than a simulator. Subscribed.
Omg...that trumpet interchange loop is gorgeous! I can't wait to try that in my own game!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😀
As far as i know with warehouses is that ''fill'' means you want to fill them up and keep it so. ''Empty'' means that everything that is stored there will be exported and ''Balanced'' is a mix and match.
If you want your factories that rely on raw materials to function properly, you would want small warhouses with said materials to be set ''fill'' so your factories wont run out of materials.
If you have a large part of your industry producing raw materials, warehouses with ''fill'' are in higher priority when storing your raw materials. In my case, everything that is left over will be sent to warehouses with ''empty'' for immediate export. Basically what that means is that, you also dont want your raw material producing facilities just stand there leeching money because they do not have free space in a warehouse!
Large warhouse set to ''empty'' for export and profit.
Small warehouse set to ''fill'' for local use.
warehouses with ''balanced'' option seemed to mess up whole production chains. Sometimes there's not enough goods for local factories and sometimes they are all full when big harvest comes in. In your case, in this example, you have ALOT of fields producing raw goods so i assume you need multiple large warehouses set on ''empty'' to get all the produce to global market pronto!
Once you get rail and other cargo transportations going, its going to be alot smoother though but, untill you rely on trucks you might want to keep these details in mind.
Anyway, just my 2 cents on the matter, havent played the game for a while though. Currently waiting CS2 to come out.
This is great…I’ve been waiting for part 2. These really help with planning out cities
Thanks Matt! 😀
@@CityZilla can u help me to design a city i can pay for it
I like how you post planning the new resourrces when they became avaliable and how beautiful your zones became with so simple small steps! Fantastic! It helps a lot
Thank you! Im glad to hear that!
This is so helpful and i love that you have broken it up into parts. Im usually pretty good at planning but for some reason i struggle to with the cities, and eventually just stop working on a map once it gets bigger. Thank you for taking the time to make these!
Thank you Shey! I'm glad I decided to put a little extra effort into this series! It seems to be helping a lot of people 😀
I didn't even know we had paths!! Thanks so much for the beginner guide.
From what I've read, the warehouses on balanced buy goods until the reach 50% and then sell everything until they reach 50%. The other ones speak for themselves haha. Love the series, had Cities bought for a while but only recently started getting into it. Fun to play but can get really in depth with all the different expansions. So I really appreciate that you go in order of which you implement them in your cities normally. Although I do like to build the parks quite early because I think they dress up the residential quite well. Keep it up!
Thanks Robinofski! I'm glad I decided to change up my dlc order. This is going to make it much more realistic for me! I usually don't use the park life assets to much. I really don't like the gate aspect to them but rather choose to build my own park's without them 😀
Your videos are so calming and provide relaxation while giving purely interesting content! Keep it up!!
Thanks Max! I'm glad I could strike that balance! That was my goal! 😀
Your freeways are a work of art and your videos are incredibly addicting. Hope to see you grow in the future - keep it up!
Thank you the RobinBrown! I appreciate you saying that! 😀
Cant wait for the next time, honestly its just fun to watch someone as skilled as you create a beautiful city and all the while I learn things too.
Thank you Wazer! I'm glad you are enjoying it episodes! : )
I think this is the best C:S guide I have come across so far.
Great job CityZilla! Keep them coming!
Wow, thank you!
Thanks CityZilla, really enjoying this series. I've been playing CS for a while and have learned things from your videos I didn't know, I did not know 😄
This game is pretty deep. I'm sure there are slews of things I am still missing but I'm doing my best to capture as much as I can 😀 I'm glad you are enjoying the videos!
Gosh, these videos are such a treat to watch. So satisfying. I've gotten the itch for Cities again, and I am quite glad I found your beginner series here. I have learned so much from just these first two videos. Thank you!
Glad you are enjoying them. Let me know if you have any suggestions!
I love your videos dude. I've been playing Cities Skylines for years, but really love your approach, and build my city with yours. Learning so much in the process.
Thanks Stephen! I'm glad you are enjoying it!
Thank you for this new series, i really need it cause i really suck at planning. I have some ideas but always ends with the same boring grids.
It's tough building out a new city. Happy to help wherever I can! 😀
love the series bro! i’m decent at the game but once i get a high population everything goes downhill. this series really helped with getting better at planning ❤
I'm glad I was able to help a little. It's tough when cities start to get big
I really appreciate the *mostly* vanilla guide, it makes it a ton easier to start out. I’m not buying DLC unless I’m certain I like the base game.
That's a good way to go. I always recommend starting out with dlc that interests you the most if you decide to take that route. I hope you enjoy the game!
The dlc make the game far better, by going off that logic you'll hate the game before you've unlocked it's full potential.
I'm really enjoying this series! You are doing a really good job of explaining your methodology when building out this city (and all your cities in general). You've done a very good job in explaining how to make the game's mechanics work for the player.
The aesthetic for this small farm town is looking very good.
One thing I have heard other C:S creators mention is having a narrative that drives the development of the city, so I'd be curious to hear how that idea plays into your build style.
Lastly, you failed to mention that players need to be very careful when landscaping around fertile land due to trees/bushes deleting fertile/agriculture resource. So maybe add a little mention at the start of the next episode.
All in all a very enjoyable and educational episode.
Thanks Azure! I did overlook the agricultural issue ill have to say something about it next week. Thanks for the tips! 😀
Really enjoyed this video. Most videos focus heavily on a perfect grid, whereas as this one takes a more holistic view.
Made me realize that grid is important but also there are unintended consequences of going pure grid.
Thanks man.
There's pros and cons to both sides of the spectrum. Glad you enjoyed it!
What you can do to make your trumpet interchanges even more realistic is to use the regular curve tool and make a clothoid curve, where one 'arm' is longer than the other. Say, your curve radius is 10 units, you'll want to go 12 units in and then 10 units to the left or right. This creates a much gentler transition and in real life it allows for higher entry and exit speeds. We do this a lot in Germany, along with banking the curves, which is one reason why we get by without a general speed limit.
Thanks for the tip! 😀
@@CityZilla Also if you don't have a problem with installing mods, I definitely recommend the following ones:
- *Network Anarchy* lets you manipulate roads, railways and fences much more precisely and without building restrictions.
- *Move It!* enables you to fix roads and misplaced pillars without demolishing and redrawing them.
- *Node Controller* lets you fix janky nodes, e.g. the game will make all intersections and transitions "flat" which turns slopes into rollercoasters. Node Controller can disable that.
- *TM:PE* lets you dial in how intersections work much more precisely and massively improve traffic flow, as well as create custom traffic light timings.
- *Prop Line Tool* lets you place props, e.g. trees in a line like you would place roads.
- *Intersection Marking Tool* is purely ornamental but looks nifty.
I personally wouldn't play the game without the first 5 mods, the last one is optional but gives your road network a HUGE boost in realism and looks.
Thanks for the tip! You would probably enjoy my other two series. I normally play with mods 😀
Man when I went to Germany and got to drive much faster at the highway it sure was a shock to feel how incredibly tight your curves going off the highway were... I had to break all the way down from 160 to like 40 at some of them and I'm used to just going back from 120/130 to 60/50... It was something I didn't expect considering you'd be allowed to approach them faster. (Maybe it's not the same everywhere and I was just taking a few in the middle of nowhere that they were sort of extremely short and tightly curved)
I'm not sure if I understand correctly but the difference in being limitless on the highway to having to reduce your speed so abruptly when getting off and on the cloverleaf (e.g.) felt very extreme to me. But I think that's just because I'm so used to the huge cloverleafs we have where I live.
The funny thing is seeing all my flow countrymen thing they can just take a left lane and pass on someone without speeding up, I mean... that just seemed logical to me to double check and make sure there's nobody flying by with 200+ but these Dutch people be thinking they're driving in Holland still... A tleast I got that part covered knowing it would be a difference, haha. But seriously, all the time I saw someone go to the left lane like a snail and have some honking mad German almost hug them from behind, it was someone with the yellow plates from a little further west...
Regards, your orange neighbour.
Great video it's a big help now I've just have to try it!! Keep up the good work
I can't believe that I have spent 2 hours watching this series XD, it was worth it thanks for your effort on making this for beginners!
Thank you for watching!
You’re planning is astounding. Gives a lot of hints and ideas to future city builders
I love how you brought the couplet around the new highway and just the design of this city is so aesthetic
Thanks Diana! Thanks for showing up! 😀
@@CityZilla this is by far my favorite "beginners guide" series even though I'm a seasoned player, I've learned a lot
I'm honored Diana! That really means a lot to me! Thank you!
Really awesome way to do highway junctions, so clean, love it!
Thanks so much for your time and effort. This series is extremely helpful 🙏🏽
I'm glad you are enjoying it! 😀
Hands down one of the best videos and I have been watching skylines videos for 5 plus years
Thank you! I am honored! 😀
Loving your videos, please keep it up :)
Looking forward to starting up a new city tomorrow and work on these tips! 🙌
Absolutely fantastic video!! This has sparked sole new inspiration for me
Thank you Adam! I'm glad you are enjoying it!
These videos are helpful and informative, which is fantastic!
I've started and started upwards of 10 cites in the past week haha. Your videos have helped me get a good start and grasp on planning.
Sometimes it can take me a while to get a new city going as well
Amazing guides mate, really enjoying this, I’m not a beginner but there are some really interesting methods to achieve these amazing looking results - big ups mate!
Thank you!
Again, super helpful!
Watching you (and really, most folks focusing on Cities content) build 'slowly' and with intent is a big reminder of you don't ever have to grow, just "building more because bar says there is demand" is the Sisyphusian task that gets the amateur player like me into problems even just 10k more population later.
Seeing how to use roads to frame out curves for things like the highway interchange are huge! I build gawd awful highway connections and really really struggled with the limited set of tools and a limited understanding of how to make things like the curve and snapping tools work best together, and that made it really frustrating to get to bigger city sizes and then watch things fall apart on the traffic side. Seeing how to use roads to frame out a predictable loop, and how to plan the different elevation levels for basket weaving the ramps through to where they need to be was educational. My own attempt at a trumpet interchange roughly following yours is still a bit bumpy and a bit too compact, but by damn I actually built a very functional one that distributes cars to my city rather than collects them like a dragon.
Just hearing you basically say "yeaaahhhhh.... industry traffic is going to be a pain in the ass" is a nice level of permission of showing something that can be frustrating to a player of any skill and may just take a lot of tweaking and experience to get right at at a larger scale.
I'm glad the episodes are helping out! We do start to build a little faster as the time goes but only to bring in some bigger ideas!
Industry traffic is always a problem 🤣
One must imagine…the amateur happy
i wish i could make my cities look like this. Im watching a bunch of lets play series just to get an idea of general layouts and thoughts. Good work, Keep it up. :)
Thank you
Loving the videos! I've always wanted to get started playing C:S, it just always seemed so intimidating to start with all the DLCs and stuff, but I think I'll give it a shot now!
If you take it one step at a time it makes more sense rather than just jumping head first into the pile of dlc
thanks for the trumpet tutorial...so helpful
Thanks DarkChillz! I was hoping people would get a lot out of it!
getting so invested in this series!
It's so nice to have found another builder! Enjoying the new series :)
Thanks Chris! 😀
Thank you for your excellent tips and video!
I like your content. One thing I've learned is that what works for one person may not work for others. I've seen you do things that are totally opposite of what some of the other folks do...but it's working. Your traffic is between 90 - 92!!!
My goal has always been to be a little different from the pack. Glad to hear you are enjoying it!
Great video. You make it look easy.
Really cool and inspiring video, thanks! :)
Thanks Jonathan!
Long awaited part 2!
It's is here!
Your videos helped A LOT... "which is fantaaaasstic"
i am watching and studying this as if i am in college again, it is just incredible to learn about and you're so good with it. and it also took me about half way through to realize that you sound a little like a more normal Mordecai from Regular Show and now I can't unhear it LOL
Glad you are enjoying the content!
I just purchased this with black Friday discounts, but with no DLCs. I like seeing how you start and what to consider for further content.
Looks pretty good
Super!! we will continue to build Thanx
thanks a lot, finally gonna play this game again
So keen to play this when I get fome you have given me so many ideas 💡
Glad you enjoyed it!
nice to watch
looking forward to watch more
Thanks MrFunny! 😀
Thank you my guy!
OMG, I just got the game and started a city on this map, but now I wanna delete it all and start over with all my new knowledge thanks to you :)
Have Fun! Every new city I build I find I get a little better!
This inspired me to install and play Cities Skylines again aashfgajsdhj thank you for making these beginner series!
I'm glad to hear you are enjoying them!
gives me the idea to make my own trumphet interchange instead of using the vanilla one . 🥰🥰🥰🥰 . ive gathered so many ideas for my city to improved . . the problem on my industry is that i use the storages like hell . . those silos and barn . . i forgot we have the large storage ones 🤣🤣🤣 thanks bro !!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
It happens 🤣 happy to help!
The high school at the top of the map reminds me of my "college" town makeup which has smaller roads, allys, 2x2 "frat row" neighborhoods, library, dorms, and a lot of fun stuff like that.
23:15 a tip - you can also use fencing along the road to block zoning. helps a lot when you want to have nice full 4x4 lots but those get obstructed by adjacent roads
also 40:50 I would go withindustral roads cause money
Thanks for the tips!
I really like the format that you present your guide videos with, and your build style! I would love if you had some videos like these beginner guides that go in depth for vanilla players (no mods or DLC) so that we can get the most out of the base game. I only have about 63 hours playtime right now and I am cheap so not planning on getting any DLC unless it's on sale, and I wouldn't know which ones to get because there are so many!
This is a great idea! I never thought of doing something like that!
First look in your channel and really enjoy your gameplay.
Cheers from Brazil
Thanks Thiago!
I am addicted to your series. Just want to say, a great drinking game watching your videos would be taking a shot every time you say "...which is fantastic".
Hahahaha if I had a nickel Everytime I heard that I would have quite a few! 🤣
nice and nice music in the end. =)
Planting trees around the ag resource area will reduces the bonus effect of the resource, especially if you concentrate the trees
Thanks for the tip! 😀
It'll actually destroy the resource underneath the trees and replace it with forestry resource. You can't delete the trees to get the farming resource back either.
Love the series, very helpful - Defently worth setting up an airport and explaining the DLC
Thanks Olly! The airports dlc is going to be great for this!
Love this a ton if info 🎯🔥🔥
Am gonna start a whole new city 👏👏
Thanks Renaye! 😀
Great video. Continue this series
Thanks Wannabe Gamer! We will be jumping back in again on Friday 😀
Thanks for the tips. One thing I noticed you didn't mention was the death wave. Adding in all that residential at the same time will create problems in the future. Everyone basically similar ages(dying at the same time). Applying residential in patches over time will spread that issue out.
Very ell done video very beautiful city aswell
Thanks Trooper! 😀
Thanks for the advice! New subscriber!
Thanks Mr Incredible! 😀
@@CityZilla no problem!
Thanks buddy for that Video, as fellow Gamers below me said, it's a big help, i'll stop on this episode until i want to expand even more (when i get there), keep it up buddy awesome content for us newbies :D
Thanks Patryk! Glad to hear it helped you out
Very nice city 😮
Your tips really has helped me get better at making cities right now im trying to do european finnish kind of town/city look and your tips have helped me get some ideas in for my town so thx you very much 🙏🏻
That's awesome to hear! Glad it is helping!
I have this game on my switch and I like it but watching you and everyone else play it on PC makes me realize how much better and easier it is on PC. It’s very difficult to do what I want to do on the switch. Having a mouse is a game changer for this game. Also, I don’t believe the switch has any DLCs for this game.
I think all of most if not all of the dlc are available on console. I know what you mean though. When I first got back into cities skyline back in 2019 is was on Xbox. And I eventually decided to upgrade because of the limitations. It's still a great game on console though
Hey man. I recently got an appendectomy, and I have been in serious pain. This series has been so relaxing and distracting to watch while in pain, and I have been loving it! I do have a question though, i have been continuosly wondering why you are using gravel roads, and not paved roads? Thanks again, and have good one man
In glad it is helping even just a little! I use gravel early on because it saves money.
Looks urban. Nice. Will start the the game after over 1 year again. Fine new ideas for me. Good job.
Happy to hear I can provide a little inspiration!
@@CityZilla jab. Thx👌
Great job on adding all services in neighborhoods. Most of players don’t do that👍
Absolutely love your attention to detail, makes all the difference. Your use of trees and props gives your builds a 'real feel' and your planning is on point. I've never been so happy to feel like an amateur. Keep them comin man!
Thank you! I try my best to find a balance between detail and playability for people
22:10: I actually lived in a city where a school was located around a commercial area. This is of benefit to students since it allows for students to interact with other students in an environment that is not just a school, which can often be suffocating. However, that place was a high school, not an elementary school, and it was in a historic part of town.
22:50: also, in the same city I used to live in, there were homes zoned along the collector, and they were not apartments. I hated that too, but one benefit to having that is the ability to allow low cost housing prices. The problem is that living there is miserable for a family…
Very true about the low cost housing. We may have to implement this to be more realistic
You probably already knew this and maybe even covered it in an episode I haven't watched yet, but if you select a tree and click a road with trees it will change the tree type along that road.
The trick of removing one tile of zoning next to collector roads is pretty clever. I don't know if the game models that - but one of the drawbacks of many similar roads in USA (and CS is clearly modelling US cities) is that they actually do have driveways connected right to it. Which conflicts with the purpose - because collector is a road, not a street - and the intention is undisrupted heavier/faster traffic flow.
I can't stand having houses connected to bigger roads. It's one of the reason I usually try to have a seperation
Patiently waiting for part 3
😀 it's coming out Friday morning at 7am EST
@@CityZilla Sweet thank you. I don't play the game, though I'd like to. I just enjoy the content.
Yes. That's a major flaw in the game: The inability to define a road reserve for future arterials. I am very aware of those in my area as its increasing in density.
I prefer to keep in mind map theme. If the map is near the ocean or tropics then I rarely use tunnels being from Florida I can attest that digging one is not the best choice. For most other map types I choose through road for one connector and the Ramps the other. Usually through roads are tunnels and ramps are bridges.
if you create a eco district with a 2 wide 3 long commercial you can actually create a parking lot it can take time though
Thanks for the tip! I was actually trying to do this is one if my out takes and then I remembered I didn't have the dlc installed yet 🤣 we will have to wait until we get more dlc. Thank you though 😀
Hey buddy - amazing series so far! Sorry if you’ve mentioned this already but what LUT / theme mix do you use?
I believe it is the Melbourne theme with the ckerya lit but I go in and change all of the individual settings as well. I'll see if I can make a mix
incredible
So cool
Bro... you don't happen to look like Bob Ross? :D Really, i LOVE how you built up this city, since this is SO different from what i have seen or played myself so far. Next I'm gonna do after this comment is start a new city, since i somehow got stuck with my old one (just startet playing myself a week ago or so), being inspired by your detail loving and very smpythically "bobrossy" way of doing a little path here, and a little bit of conveniance store there... nice, for me, the best add-on or DLC i could get for this game! I figure this even beats the "never run out of money"-mod ;)
Thank you! It's nice hearing that people are enjoying the episodes! 😀
@@CityZilla i know.. that's why I say ;)
It's a little bit more of "giving back" than just a like under every video I see
4:30 In order to have more realistic overpasses, I recommend to make a slope section to be 12 units long. Shorter slopes are unrealistically steep.
nice stuff bro
Thanks TheUKnowWhat!
I don’t know why but for one of my own first highway exits I always pick a diamond interchange especially when it is close to industry I love when they swap the lanes
Diamonds are great interchanges. I have never used one for a city start but I bet it has potential!
fantastic
Thank you!
Hello, I just discovered your channel yesterday and have really enjoyed your videos so far. I don't play Cities Skylines, but I enjoy watching other people play it.
I was wondering if you think it's a good idea to maybe use a road that allows on-street parking in your commercial district since you don't have parking lots yet?
Thanks mrjay! In glad you are enjoying the series! I thought about this and I really wish there was more on street parking roads. I don't know if we will switch back because I prefer the aesthetic though
Hi, which map theme are you using? I like this green theme and the street color, thanks.
I have a theme mix on my steam page for this series
that industry road parking lot was genius
Amazing. Really don’t like elevated highways over homes though. Everything in its place unless the game rewards it.
This is beautiful. Super beautiful
Great videos. I'm new to the channel and would like to request some roundabouts.
Thanks! We will dive into some roundabouts here soon! 😀
