These are some pretty big errors. The fact that generations 3-5 were never available digitally means the closing of the eShop has had absolutely nothing to do with their prices. The simple reality is that the demand for the authentic game cards is only rising over time and the supply of working authentic game cards is only decreasing.

I was really lucky to buy Pokémon Black for $15 and the seller also had Pokémon HeartGold for $45 (booth loose cartridges) and I really should’ve bought that HG even tho I kinda already had one, it was borrowed tho.
Then a friend sold me his Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Black 2, Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon, some other DS games (loose carts) and even a Pokémon case all for $25!
Which was an absolute STEAL 😼🤑✊🏼
All of this was when I was still in high school about a year or two before the pandemic hit, I got really lucky ✊🏼🔥

Are you able to play ds or 3ds games and if so how? I use retroarch on mine and it doesn't have a ds emulator. Ps I have a very basic understanding of homebrew for the 3ds

Gamestop used to sell any of the pre-owned Pokémon games at an extremely lower rate than ebay, and the best part was the games were always authentic(2018 was the last time i trusted the shop). But now they don’t have authentic copies, and might accidentally sell a user a fake copy, all because the resellers don’t want gamestop to sell these games at a fair price.
The reason why these games are going up is because resellers now control the price of the games. What they seemingly did was buy as many authentic games from gamestop and then immediately file a return, but instead of returning the games they bought, they gave gamestop fake games in return. So now Gamestop’s trust is lower and even if they had an authentic game to sell, no one will believe them with the low price they try to sell it for.
We all know that its to expensive to get.
But all of us also know we will buy it as soon as u have enough.
Good video! A couple facts were incorrect though. The DS and DS Lite could only play GBA games, similar to the Gameboy micro. Also, only the 3DS games were available digitally though the E-Shop

There’s absolutely no denying that Pokémon games have recently taken a nosedive in quality, but I do think that it is at least worth mentioning that the reason for it is because the game freak really is not a AAA studio. They are severely rushed and overworked by the Pokémon company for the sake of pumping out a new game every year, and as demands for performance and features and all that stuff increases over time, they spread themselves too thin, and what we end up with is something like Pokémon scarlet and violet.
Exactly, and it's not just the Pokémon company or Game Freak. you can see this trend on almost every video game company putting out half assed video games in 2022-2023

As a person who hacked their 3ds ages ago in 2017 and bought another to hack it as well I never had this problem.
Great vid! Another problem with emulation is that you can't transfer anything to later games + bank/home without doing some technical know how stuff to inject a "fake" save into a real game. This probably isn't a big deal for some, but here's a prime example of how this could be useful: You know that literally impossible to complete tera raid for mewtwo in S/V right now? It'd be great if you could transfer that mew you got as a 2010's mystery gift in HGSS up to S/V to fight with it!
The older games will always have value as long as they are compatible with the latest games, so the prices will continue to rise regardless of the $60 "superior" remakes they keep rushing out. It's the sad reality of a pkm fan...
I homebrewed my 2ds XL the other day and it has been a fantastic way to play these games again

Ive never grew up playing the pokemon games (but with the anime). I have some games that i got with a almost in perfect condition 3ds XL for 145€ (there were 3 pokemon games included). Planning on modding it and dont know where to start with the games. Any recommendations?
Its literally purely price flipping - the pokemon games on ds arent rare - they have literally been produced in millions
If you want to play those games I highly recommend buying a DSi or 3Ds and install Twilight Menu, the games run perfectly
Twiilight menu on 3ds is prob the best way to play these old games without breaking the bank

I've been using the Drastic DS emulator for years, works perfectly with the two screen functionality.
I still have my DS versions, gen 1-2 on virtual console on my 3 3DS models, & gen 3 on ROMs on my Everdrive and Analogue Pocket. ROMs are the future and perfect for retro handhelds
DS emulation looks bad, but you can use a ds or a 3ds to play the pirated games, it is not moraly wrong because like you said in the video, Nintendo doesnt sell them anymore, they have game boy and game boy advance in switch and they refuse to put any single pokemon game. Reselled copies of pokemon do not make Nintendo any profit.
Pokemon game prices are so expensive omg, I always wanted to have them for collecting purposes and refused to pay such high prices... I ended up buying some Japanese Pokemon Games which were signficantly way cheaper.
The strange thing is that I bought a 3DS game for cheap. $30. Pokemon omega ruby and I checked the site a month later and it was like $45! Not much more but for some reason it got so pricey.

The DS couldn't play Gameboy and Gameboy color games. Only GBA and DS. And it was only the first 2 models.
I'm sorry, but I've been playing these games my whole life, but both of these reasons are absolute reaches.
The older games were racking up in price even long before the Wii U and 3DS eshops closed, and as another comment said, you couldn't even buy the GBA or DS games on the eShop - and especially, the quality of SwSh or ScVi do not impact the cost of those older games at all. There's absolutely nothing that leans to even suggest that - it's mainly hardcore fans that dislike the content of the Switch games, the general audiences loved it and bought it in droves. And Covid being the reason the games increased...? I mean, yeah, we are all indoors, but it's still nothing close to being related - again, even before Covid, these games were overpriced on eBay or 2nd-hand shops. Nostalgia, yeah. Covid? No.
I was expecting some actual insight here, but it seems like you've made a bunch of assumptions and are passing them as fact. I dunno why they've skyrocketed in price either, but I don't think these are the reason why.
Maybe, genuinely, the reason is simple... People know they can charge higher because it's Pokémon, and so then people buy just them at that price. Then those prices are the new norm, and keep going up and up and up. People charge it cos people buy it. So people just need to stop buying them, and they'll come down. You said it yourself, these games sold millions - they're not hard to come by, there's usually even multiple listings from the same sellers / businesses. Just wait, they'll get official re-releases again some day, or if people stop paying stupid prices, the prices will begin to drop.
One thing I have to give him though, as Pokémon grows there will always be new faces wanting to go back in time, sometimes authentically and will by a modded Gameboy just to experience Gen1-3 because everyone says how amazing they are compared to whatever new game they just finished.
I had Pokémon crystal when I was kid (to this day my favorite Pokémon game) and I lent it to a friend and never got it back. If i ever see him again I’m gonna ask him about it 😂

I think it's more to do with wanting the simpler times back, I'd say from my own personal experience modern Pokemon doesn't really scratch that itch anymore. Going back and playing White 2 I'm instantly back in my element, everything has been so streamlined and changed it's nice to look back at what was considered peak Pokemon.
Not that I hate Sc/Vt or Sw/Sh those games are amazing to me, just different era of Pokemon really.
9:44 this is not an issue with poor emulation, this is a filter that you have turned on in the emulators settings which is under view > magnification filter assuming you're using DeSmuMe. Furthermore, you neglect the real best option, hack a 3ds and play pirated ds or 3ds games on there.

I've recently bought soul silver, heart gold and platinum. As well as omega ruby (which was apparently a brand new copy that I opened to play).
And I've been looking to get black/white 2, but I do NOT want to spend OVER 200 just to get it, when I've already spent at least a few hundred between the 4 games I just got. But who knows. Maybe I'll end up getting a good deal, or just making a little o-t at work just to justify the investment.
Oh and I bought a 3ds xl and a dsi xl just to have the ability to play these games. I never owned a ds before hand. I only just got on the train when I saw how much leaf green and emerald were selling for. Now I'm holding on to those games from when I was a gba kid, and those were the only pokemon games I ever owned.
Since I never played anything past gen. 3, and I remembered my younger brothers having played diamond and pearl. I decided to look into buying a copy of diamond, then realizing that Platinum was the better choice. Then having learned that soul silver and heart gold existed. From there, i got into the rabbit hole. And I am SO GLAD I did.

I've emulated Gen IV and V on my cellphone, and found it to run very well, in terms of graphics as well as fps among other metrics.
Yeah, I am lucky enough to have a nice and new big phone screen, so two small screens isnt so bad. But for me, playing these games for free beats buying a new DS/3DS and going through that rigamarole when emulation is so easy and works so well 99% of the time.
And you can speed up that god awfully slow gameplay 🔥

i'm selling my pokemon games for $650 tomorrow 10 pokemon games which from ebay i think if it was in great condition and with the boxes i could've gotten it for $1.1k but i stored all my games in a case but the boxes are somewhere in storage or destroyed depending how my dad handled all my game cases i had when i was a kid. Soul silver, heart gold, Green/red, plat, white and black, white2 and black2, platinum, mystery dungeons something. Should i be doing this. I kinda need the money right now but not really. I'm just wondering if they are going to skyrocket in price again in a little while.... I might as well be my own little collector but i dont understand collecting something that i can play on my Miyo mini 2. I also woudnt really want to play such an old game anymore.
DS emulation is super easy on Android if you have the right emulator.

being a shameless pokemon fan, i bought both scarlet and violet on release (partially because i didn't want to pay double their price in the future) i played and gave up after a day because it was so disappointing... however, i'm hearing people say the dlc has made it a pretty good game, some even going as far as to say one of the best pokemon games... so i'll give it a try again soon
Just dropped 60$ on White w/ case and booklets. Couldn't ever imagine paying more than that, so I am happy enough with it. Only bought because I don't enjoy Pokemon emulators. Still though, these games are hitting insane prices now.

Well it really depends how game freak does they can either just make a remake of the 1st bw or make a sequel to the second either way if that happens the 2nd game will go up even more probably, because a lot of people are wanting a sequel

I spent $358.00 on Pokemon Emerald and Crystal this morning.
I got diamond pokemon white and black 2 for $90 in 2024 in 2016 my buddy gave me platinum free I still have my original diamond and pearl and I lost the cartridge for soul silver but have everything else
R4….? Lmao or hacking a 3DS to download all of them games before the mostly bad switch games… I mean just sayin. I literally only have Yellow and Silver physically. All the GBA-3DS games are either on my R4 or my hacked Japanese 3DS and yes all games can play in English. I do want all of them physically at some point because I’m a collector but also at some point most of the games won’t work one day in the far future so hacking/modding a console is the way to go.
It's simple. Pokemon has literally never been a bigger franchise than it is today. The new games became the fastest selling: 1. Pokemon 2. Console Exclusive 3. Nintendo game of ALL TIME. 10 million copies in three fucking days. And yes, TOTK did match it but still, Pokemon is so big that people are willing to pay any price they have to to play games that the new fans never got to experience.

Rarity and greediness
Picked up X/Y, Sun & Moon, Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon and OR/AS for like $20 each 6 months ago....now they have all doubled in price if not more....i think its more of a statement to how poorly Nintendo has treated fans with the lack of a virtual console and the insanely poor quality of the Switch pokemon games.
Also, for anyone wanting it cheap, there are emulation cards that you can buy for $20-40 that you can use directly on your DS/3DS.

And before you say "they're both DSes and the 3ds can play ds games" the wii u can play wii games and they're considered separated systems, the wii could play gamecube games and they're separated systems, the switch can run wii u games and they are separate systems does that mean that the original xbox, xbox 360, xbox one, and xbox series x are all the same system with the same specs because they all have backwards compatibility. 1. The DS could play GBA games but wasn't compatible with original GB or GBC games.
2. The 3DS isnt a DS. Its a sequel console, not a revision.
3. The original DS did not have gyro controls.
4. Diamond and Pearl were released in 2007, not 2006.
5. DS games were not available digitally on 3DS.
6. When people say just emulate DS games; they're not talking about emulation on PC. They're talking about DS flash cartridges, and modded 3DS consoles. Look it up, 3DS modding is surprisingly easy.
Diamond and Pearl were released in September 2006 in Japan, they were released in the West in April 2007.

GameFreak and Nintendo want you to forget the older Pokémon games. Specifically, how good the older ones were. They would rather you spend money on the newer games. Too bad they suck though. Thank Arceus for ROM hacks.
