This is a unique looking aircraft, and one type that you don't see every day, in the Western world, at all.

victoria island helicopters (VIC) is the only operator of the KA-32 in north america. we use them here for heli-logging, because the coaxial rotors make for an incredibly stable flight, and very predictable downwash. they have also been co-oped for forest fighting here, being used to carry water buckets for precision dumps

Two things keep coaxials from being adopted universally over single rotor. Increased drag from the rotor mast and from having two main disks. Tamdems like the CH-47 avoid this by using longitudinal cyclic to pull the nose up during high speed forward flight, this works because "elevator cyclic" on a tandem is by difference between the collective pitch at front and rear disk. The other problem is more limited rate of nick and roll due to the potential for rotor self collision. That's not to say coaxials are bad, but they have tradeoffs.

and the third secret reason is we haven't figured out how to make them as well as the Russians yet and we don't want to admit it
