RIP Andy Rourke, 1964-2023. Your contribution to this fantastic band will always be remembered. Much love from a fan out of Middelburg. X
RIP Andy Rourke. Remembering his artistry and musical legacy 💔
💔
he was one of the greatest bass players of all time
F'N legend !!!
He was the sound of the Smiths to me. I've been a bass player myself for 40 years and Andy was easily one of the most creative, melodic players of all time.
who's tryna hop in a time machine & see them live with me
I'm in bro
Me too
pls take me with you lol
Count me in
Let's fucking goooooooooo
We all know Johnny's genius, but seriously, Andy is probably the most underrated bassist in rock music history.
Barbarism is undeniable proof of this
I think you mean he's a great bass player, he isn't playing progressive rock lol
I agree. Even his own band seemed to not realize how great he was. His harmonies and interplay with Marr are incredible. Plus, he played all of his basslines so effortlessly, nonchalantly even, and they're pretty demanding as far as basslines go. He's also just as good with a pick as with fingers, and understood the strengths of both ways, and how and when to utilize each technique.
@@julesl6910what does that mean?
@@wedamammynuns she thinks being technically impressive is the same as being a good bassist
Ah yes my favourite Smiths song, “The crack on the head”. Nothing I love more than sitting down and enjoying a good listen to The Crack On The Head
Haha 😂
Morrissey can roll around with his shirt half off and a bouquet of flowers in his pants and it's "fantastic stage presence" but when I do it it's "always taking things too far" and "stop it honey you're scaring the children"
Jajajaja loved it😂❤️ and I try to dance like him too
😂 Thank you for making me laugh and doing so scaring my children
The fact that you dance and sing in front of your children is awesome. 😂🎉❤
"Fantastic stage presence" is questionable. I think he looks like an absolute tit.
Johnny Marr's stage presence, on the other hand, is fabulous 👌
Putting flowers on a tank is different than a VW bus
So this is how you officially dance to The Smiths.
Haha yess
Pretty much, yeah.
I never stopped dancing like that, 35 years later i still got the moves :-)
peanutbutterrobot yep 👍🏻
You don't I guess. I've learnt to love their music but fuck the pompousness of it all!

❤
This should be pinned!!! Nice one
Johnny Marr is one of the most underrated guitar players ever.
And songwriters. He wrote all the Smiths songs with Moz doing the lyrics and a few of the vocal melodies and Rourke doing a handful of the bass lines.
Underrated by who?? Everybody knows about your talent
@@guilhermeguimaraes2496 about Glurt's talent? HAHAHAH
And rightly so.
Underrated? I feel like people know he rules but I guess the smiths in general are kinda love hate? I feel like some people don’t like morrisey but everyone loves Johnny
Incredible really to think that Marr was only 20 at the time, one of the best.
He's always in my top 🎸
@George joy why? he is the best
George joy Clapton’s English. And yes I would put him above Prince and Clapton.
@George joy clapton is the best blues guitarist. Prince is the best rnb/soul guitarist. Marr us the best guitar-dance guitarist
@George joy Paco de Lucia, Page and Beck for me, also considering my taste.☺ But I LOVE Johnny too!!! He's unique on his style, those guitar carpets feel magical ❤
This bassist is so under rated. This is what a good bass player does to band. Genuinely suprised me by how rich these bass lines are
100% agree. Andy Rourke is very underrated!
He sadly passed away a month ago :(
They're stunning bass lines. I love how they match perfectly with the drums, guitar and singing.
young morrissey gives me the happiest vibes
old morrissey gives.... quite the opposite
Old Morrissey is sad especially since his mother died and the pitiful message he posted begging for prayers for her, well anyway, now he's elderly and I wish he had a life partner to take care of him and love him the rest of his life etc
Rourke gets so overlooked, those lines are flawless.
Johnny wrote all the bass lines.
Yes Marr wrote the line... but Andy played them! Masterfully I may add
monga No Johnny fuckin didnt write the bass lines. If People don’t know The Smiths their should stop talking shit like this
Joshua Bochum Stop listening to the Smiths you metal idioti
It's highly doubtful that Marr wrote the bass lines. That's what he and moz claimed in the lawsuit. But the chords were likely written by Marr and then Rourke would work on the lines
If only other Smith concerts were in this quality. I'm genuinely sad I was born too late to catch the Smiths in their prime. But with footage like this I can get a real feel about how seeing Morrissey, Marr and the gang would have felt. Absolutely love it! Top notch!
Hey man, have you heard about a brazilian band called "Legião Urbana"? They got their inspiration in Smiths and they really rocked everything... Try it to see if you'll enjoy their music.
Dan, we, our generation, are who really appreciated this band, I have read enough about them and those days to know that they weren't treated as they deserved. If other people were in the England of those days, this band would have been much more famous, and we would have other golden songs. I wonder which masterpieces we missed because of that.
mistersurrealist Got some of their stuff, thanks man
I saw them back in December '86 in Cleveland, just a few months before they broke up. They still put on a good show even at that time.
I've seen 1/2 of The Smiths in 2 separate concerts. Both were special for different reasons. Morrissey was at the Palace in London while visiting my daughter. And Marr was in an intimate club in Providence, RI. I was standing 25 feet from Marr up on stage!
So this concert is Gold for me!!!
26:07 best part, Rourke playing a solo and Marr dancing with Moz ♥️
It really is one of the coolest Morrissey/Marr moments on film [for me anyway] the 80's Lennon & McCartney' some ppl who are not so familiar with them & say they are depressing what not, they really don't get Morrissey is being ironic & had very dark humour, & in contrast to that we get Marr's really upbeat happy [even euphoric guitar/music that he wrote, & the really badly underrated Rourke/Joyce] 'The Queen Is Dead' is a perfect example or Some Girls Are Bigger Then Others' the latter as Marr said "Is Smiths in a nutshell"
This is not a solo
1:08:36 but the cameraman :(
@@princerogersnelson5166 I got to see them live. I was mouth open agape at Marr, juxtaposed by this insane front man who we all worshiped.
yess i agree
This was May 4, 1984, in his begginins. Mor 24, Johnny 20, Andy 20 and Mike 20. And it looks like these guys have been playing on stage for 10 years. GREAT MUSICIANS.
Imbelievable!! So mature. And strong to impose yourself with calm songs in front of a loud crowd that was craving for punk it seems.
"and she doesn't even like me. I know because she said so." LMAO
It's a cool line tho
She still liked it when we Fucked.
@@udubidub not very Smiths
Dude this band was like no other, flawless bass lines by rourke, joyce is such an underrated drummer, of course marr's beautiful yet impossible riffs and morrisseys angelic yet sad voice! Christ i wish i was alive when this band was about
First time I've read anyone describe Morrissey's voice as angelic, and it's hilarious.
@@mammontustado9680 what do they usually describe it as?
It's definitely angelic, sensual even
I wished it too❤️. The smiths is my favorite band, they are so underrated and unic like no one else 🙌 their sound and lyric
Part of what makes Marr's Smiths riffs so difficult is that Morrissey doesn't really sing to the beat. When you're learning this stuff you have to block the lyrics out because they'll throw you off.
Marr’s guitar is like an extension of his body, plays it so naturally
It's like he's playing sweet jazz chords with a rock pop riff beat...really unique
Like Angus Young of AC/DC, or Hendrix. Excuse my broken english.
@@emersontomasini9495 no broken english. All good 👍
saw them 1 year after this in Barcelona, I knew they were good, but Marr was was exceptional
@@emersontomasini9495 this is very good English friend don’t worry :)
I can’t get over how amazing they sound. Moriessey sounds amazing and is singing like it’s second nature and sounds exactly like the recording. And all of the instruments sound so incredibly clear. I’ve liked the smiths for like 2 years now but this concert gives me a whole other appreciation for them. Especially with Moriessey’s dance moves and how flamboyant he is in such a modern way.
Keep in mind that this is a "modernized" version of the original recording, athough its very lightly Mixed and Mastered (getting rid of static noise, slighty readjusting pitch and volume of some instruments and such). Youre totally right tho, they sound much better live than most studio albums of their decade and even better than many contemprorary mastered recordings.
😍
those people are the luckiest people ever
I don’t know about the luckiest EVER
@@Random-gk8doi do!
If I had a time machine, one of my first stops would be a trip to this concert.
Watching The Smiths live always makes me anxious that one of them is going to trip over Morrissey's microphone cable.
kunkashi that's exactly what my dad's friend did in the 80s 😂
That true bro lol
Morrissey is the only person who moves though.
Why do you think Rourke diesnt move for the whole show his legs are tangled
RIP Andy Rourke! Thanks for everything!!
The Smiths had it all. A lyricist equal to Hardy and the rest. Solid rhythm section and a guitarist who created melody and constructed studio pieces worthy of Page. One of Britain's best bands.' Why pamper life's complexities?'
Needle in the You Tube haystack: a literate, reasonable, non-superfluous remark! Blue ribbon
Flawless baselines by Andy Rourke, the perfect counterpoint to Johnny Marr's guitar lines. RIP, Andy.
The sound the atitude the poetry total surprise in 80s...
One of best bands on Brit pop rock in the last 30years...
Born in 1970, when I was 13 I pass The time listening Hendrix, Morrison, Led Zep, The Who, and then, like a teenager I listen The Smiths when 16 years old and they blow my mind. I can closed my eyes and come back to that moment in that summer. What a incredible feeling!
1 hour of my life well spent.
The bass on Barbarism Begins at Home needs more love, man is amazing.
Agreed
Same with pretty girls make graves, Andy was such a talent
There will never be another smiths in history...Embrace the unique rarity that we were lucky enough to have experienced...☘
Rest in peace Andy.
The way Johnny smiles in the outro for Pretty Girls Make Graves. I so look forward to that outro. He is the master of the melancholy outro.
It’s sublime.
Morrisseys stage precence is out of this world. Fantastic to watch
He owns that stage.
@@mumbles215 he looks like an awkward moron, sorry for that :D
👍Yes always 😊
That's what a real front man needs to be like
Andy Rourke ... the perfect bassist
Barbarism begins at home 👌🏻
He rips so hard
The Smiths are one of the best bands ever.
We can all agree Johnny Marr is epic, but that bass throughout, hats off.
The guitar line and the bass line just combine so flawlessly, despite being entirely different. Brilliant.😍😍😍
Young Morrisey was the real frontman
He had it. Just unique and didint give one fuck. Dancing like an asshole and it’s fucking great!!
Andy and those wonderful bass lines. Listen to Andy! That's an order!
Andy Rourke the most underrated bassist of all time
F
2019: still the best music group!
2020! :D
2021 :)
2022! :)
2023 🤙
2024 🎉
R.I.P Andy Rourke
The world NEVER ever will have another bassist like you... Forever in our hearts!
these guys were 20 years old when they made this! thats what I find most incredible. Look at these kids playing so well. this is class, professionalism, you don´t see this anymore.
You obviously have not seen the shit kids are doing nowadays because yes they do
Morrissey was 25
The bassline on Barbarism begins at home tho 👌🏻
James Brooks it is honestly what gets me through life
so good the killers copied it... jenny was a friend, very similar, even the singing melody is ripped off
i know its great but show me morrissey and johnny marr dancing!°
James Brooks
YES INDEEDY DONT BE GREEDY
A melhor banda do universo de toda a história
before youtube and video recorders; we had to stay awake and watch Rockpalast on German television broadcast at night
In the states I had to wait for Friday Night Videos. On Friday nights. 6 more days in the week tho.
Andy Rourke, God Almighty, just fills the whole groove of the song perfectly with s#$! no other bassist would think of! He just stands there casually playing complete genius. The whole band is cool AF.
Studs. All of them.
I know everyone loves Johnny, and most love Moz, but can we just take a moment to appreciate Andy Rourke?! Those lines....
Three years later it was all over. And humanity missed the opportunity to save itself.
If you were at this concert I don’t think you realise how
lucky you were!
Thank God for Rockpalast! Incredible concerts. Music history.
Can't believe that camera man, moving the camera away just when Morrissey & Marr are getting down, a very rare or only! moment caught on film 26:19 great show regardless, they were always great live! dare I say the greatest Indie band of all time next to Joy Division [imho] & shout out to early REM the US's Smiths
where can I find the film?
I can’t get over how great they sound here. It’s studio quality - they were so in their prime in these years
All four of them are so good! And they were so young!
26:00 56:30 1:08:23 1:03:20
just marrissey moments that i love
56:36 :) so cute
I just love how they sound live. Minimalistic, dry, direct.. soo good. :)) One of my favorites videos on youtube ever.
Quarentena com The Smiths
same
My love for Smiths has increased even further now that I know how good they performed live, it's an absurd
Lennon - McCartney, Mercury and May, Jagger and Richards... and Morrissey and Marr are up there
It makes me kinda sad bcs It's too late to see them live. What an awesome band. The best.
Morrisey...😍😍😍😍😍
ahh makes me melancholic and sad to think of how I've kind of missed all of this because I just wasn't alive yet.
And seeing Moz and Johnny dance around eachother so happily makes it all the more sad to think about how they've cut all contact to these days and how much they seem to hate the idea of reforming the band just once.
I'm missing something I was never even a part of, which is weird. Still happy to live in the digital age where I can just watch these concerts back though, tysm for uploading.
If I could time travel, this show would be one of my first stops. I’m bummed that I never had to chance to experience The Smiths in person.
i understand you, i think about how tragic it is everyday
Still here in 2020
Still completely mesmerized by them all
ABSOLUTE MUSICAL GENIUSES
i love the smiths i wish british people were real
lol "the crack on the head", my fave smiths song ;)
Barbarism begins at home
That actually made me laugh.
Hahaha
Jajaja 😂😂😂
I was ready to comment the same thing 🤣🤣🤣
Amazing show. It's very rare that I prefer a band's live sound to their studio recordings, and this is it. Thanks for uploading.
The 2nd time they play “hand in glove” is just pure gold. Best version I’ve heard. On fire there.
i would do anything to be at this concert.
I listened to the Smiths through the 1980's, never saw them live. Morrissey is a great lyricist !
My favorite video of a live show ever. The Smiths are just the best no contest.
T-Bus check the Smiths live in Madrid
Truly one of the most original and greatest bands of the early 80's! Oh to see The Smiths as young lads again. Their songs spoke to the times so well. Incredible memories rush through me as I watched this great concert footage. Thanks so much for sharing this!
I wouldn’t say I was “born in the wrong generation” because of how vapid and generic that sounds. I do wish I was eligible to see this performance though. I’m 12 years old and experienced my first Smiths song when I was in 5th grade. I think I am more mature than a lot of people my age. I am definitely more pessimistic than optimistic which makes my perspective on arbitrary things disorienting and bewildering to others my age. They don’t understand why I like depressing songs. I also like science and math a lot more than my friends. I wish my generation had more innovative thinkers and “funny” people because everyone at my school has horrendous humor. I don’t want to be known only for TikTok and the other ludicrous social media apps. I wish this world was different, but I would not time travel into the past for the sake of the good, old butterfly effect.
What an awesome concert. The quality and sound of this concert is excellent. Must have been a special night to be in the audience live.
Goodbye Andy. Brilliant bass player. R.I.P.
What a genius band The Smiths were.
51:19 - This Charming Man 👹👹
I wish I could’ve experienced this
I do and I don’t. I’m not a big fan of crowds, but it would be nice to see them up close. Either way, it’s irrefutably impossible for me to have had the chance to see this concert because I’m 12 years old.
Get out and be around people. It’s good to commune. This size crowd is pleasant. Not too jammed. Not too big.
Marr was awesome for his age and the rest of the band held their own. The drums and bass are one point. Love the drums on Heaven knows. The bass in Barbarism is so pre Duran Duran John Taylor... Just awesome.
I wish I had a time machine to go back and be at this awesome concert!!! Love this!!!
I first saw this recording in 1998 and am still gobsmacked by the musicianship between Marr and Rourke on Barbarism. Bravo.

oh to see the smiths concert
I've been listening to The Smiths since the late 80s and will listen to them forever. The reason is obvious from this video, the amazing music. I love them
They were so good. Great melodies...baselines...... and great live too.......
A band that was and still is generatin' goosebumps instantly.
Literally the best band i've ever learned to love since 2012
43:47 i love how The Smiths acted kind of punk , with lyrics about existencial dread and surfy guitar :) Perfect combo

-What's your favorite song of the Smiths?
-Crack On the Head
JAJAJAJAJAJAJ
Kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk.....i noticed too.
Hahahahahahahahh very good
After I commented this I uploaded an edit of that song and turned it into a Smithwavesong. It's on my channel if you wanna check it out. It was a joke tho, but I kinda liked it
I don't get it
That choker on the guitarist is pure fab .
Some of the tightest, cleanest playing you'll ever hear.
Johnny Marr is an absolutely amazing guitarist. That Girl Afraid is sick!
Class!! Morrissey with his 28inch waist.
80/90s... one of the last best rock bands . Its like a soundtrack of that years
His dancing is so badass.. I love how cool it looks when he is dancing to the drums all casual and fluid like
Barely a dropped note between Rourke and Marr - superb.
Guitar and bass in Barbarism begins at home always blows my mind every single time, especially the riff in the verse
Spins your head with how much is happening and you can’t work out any of it in the best way possible
I love early Smiths, also the video quality is top notch!
Devo rules!
Sup, spud
though there is no later smiths
There’s no later Smiths-.
There is later smiths 4 years later and the Magic was gone.
このライブは最高だ。
my fav performance of all time
