twitter gave me emoji combinations, and I'm here to find a book to match socials instagram / booksandlala twitter / booksandlala goodreads / booksandlala
I have a reading challenge idea for you: I was at GoodReads and noticed the "because you read..." and I thought that that might be a good idea; read all the "because you read/liked..." recommendations. so - a recommendation chain: Because you read The Raven Boys, you might like The Queen of Nothing Because you read The Queen of Nothing, you might like Serpent & Dove Because you read Serpent & Dove, you might like The Beautiful Because you read The Beautiful, you might like A River of Royal Blood Because you read A River of Royal Blood, you might like Eight Will Fall Because you read Eight Will Fall, you might like Wicked As You Wish Because you read Wicked As You Wish, you might like A Heart So Fierce and Broken... Just choose a random amount of books
For a good ghost-with-a-hint-of-romance story, I recommend “Anna Dressed in Blood” by Kendare Blake. It’s the first in a duology and I can confirm that they are both held to a similar standard of goodness. Some parts really hit the feels.
Loved watching you matching books to the emojis! I was laughing so hard at you trying to figure out some of them. Would love to see you do more of these kind of videos.
Honestly, your recommendations and interpretations? A++++ an unwanted guest is actually perfect bc I wanted a thrilleresque read set during winter, and I’ve been debating giving Shari Lapena a chance so decision made!
Really loved what you did with this emoji video, I just wish I had known about it before you had done this so I could have joined in. Love what you’ve done with this and I found it great fun to watch
I've only just discovered your channel and have been watching a few videos. I screamed 'The Seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle' the moment I saw those emojis and hearing you recommend it also. I am now a subscriber!
Chloe Chiasson Don’t Date Rosa Santos would be another great one - lots of bruja vibes, tropical Florida Keys/island/Cuban vibes - it’s such a fun read! It is billed as a romance but it’s more about relationships between multiple generations of women and struggling with multiple cultural identities (but with tons of island vibezzzzzz)
I love this video idea so much, it’s so creative and fun 😌 and oh my gosh The Good Daughter is a book that’s super high on my TBR so that’s so crazy you recommended it for my emojis haha! Guess this means I have to read it now 😅
The one sent in by Lisa G that Kayla said reminds her of The Ring immediately had me thinking of House Of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski. The emojis line up PERFECTLY.
The instant I saw the second emoji combination I KNEW IT! I’ve only recently discovered The Raven Cycle (through your channel I believe - THANK YOU) and I’m just about to read Blue Lily, Lily Blue for the first time, but I’m already so attached to the characters and the world and EVERYTHING about it. As an Author-in-Training (and a human in general, haha) I’ve been really inspired by this series and am trying my best to create a story of my own with even a FRACTION of the impact that this book has had on its readers. If you were to pinpoint the top reasons for why this series has connected and stuck with you, what would they be?
Lala I am reading Daughters of the Lake and I see it on your good-reads to be read and I recommend it because its a mystery but it has a mythical magical part that causes a spooky vibe that leaves me with a creepy feeling!
I thought Kate's was grumpy guy meets happy girl and they fall in love. Which probably says more about me than anything else. The heart bread thing feels like falling in love with a baker or at a bakery. There are lots of romance/"chick lit" type books called things like "the little cupcake café" but I haven't read any. I feel like that's what that person is looking for though.
My TBR is already massive but I see a book recommendation video by you, must watch it. I guess it’s just gonna get a little bit bigger 😀. Also 👻🍆- the mammoth book of ghost romance, I haven’t read it all yet but it’s a ghost romance anthology
For camping, I would recommend Honor Girl by Maggie Thrash and Be prepared by Vera Brosgol, they're both graphic memoirs. To Nightowl from Dogfish by Holly Goldberg Sloan and Meg Wolitizer, a parent trap middle grade but it's gay.
Some people gave waaaaaaay too many emojis, poor Kayla! I've seen artists do this and they'll draw something based off the combination, which is admittedly much easier then book recs, but it'll still be just like, 3 emojis.
For Maggie I'd recommend The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal. It has space, rockets, asteroids, emergencies and lots of inter-personal relationships.
Omg I was just thinking this! It surprised me just how different this story was from her other books. Was not expecting it when I went into it but I enjoyed the journey.
Thank you!! I’ve been trying to decide which Shaun David Hutchinson book to start with and now I know. Sorry about the water haha. I meant for it to correlate to a seaside town lol. 🖤
My recommendation to Dustin Matthew is Cemetery boys by Aiden Thomas and will be released in june 2020. Is about a Latinx trans boy that is determined to prove to his family that he is a brujo, and to do that he decide to summon his cousin ghost, but end up summoning the wrong ghost and start to fall in love with him. Ps: If i missed something in my writing, let me know! English is not my first language and i am not tottally confident when i'm the one doing the writing.
YES you got my name right! I LOVE that that is what you got from my emojis, I honestly just picked 4 random emojis to see what you might come up with but I L O V E slow burn romance and I am THRILLED
This was fun. I recently read VERGE: Stories by Lidia Yuknavitch. It's a short story collection and it's about people in awful situations who are resilient but it gets really werid. I did a poor job of describing it, but loved it. If you pick it up I hope you do too!
I was the one with the Alice in Wonderland one. But you got it with the second guess! I wanted something with like elements of Alice in Wonderland, but a twist or a remake or something like that! :) Thanks for the rec!
For the one with a haunted house and ghosts and a tv and film and a demon, try Scream All Night by Derek Millman. The best way I’ve heard it described is Chuck Palaniuk for teens!
For @jessethereader ghost investigator, ring, star, city, key, I would recommend Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsela. It's about a girl who is haunted by the ghost of her dead aunt who wants to find her lost key necklace. We end up investigating across the city trying to figure out the truth of what happened to her aunt.
I read ‘In the Skin of a Monster’ by Kathryn Barker last year. It’s by an Australia author and is a young adult paranormal/horror/mystery. I was weird but I enjoyed it.
Ghost Eggplant: Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready, which I haven't read in a decade but remember being very fun. It's about a girl who's boyfriend dies and then haunts her while she goes on an adventure with another boy who can also see ghosts
Omg I just listened to the Dyatlov Pass mystery today on a past episode of My Favorite Murder. Was Dead Mountain recommended to me by you through fate?! Yes.
Kate definitely wanted a "Bad/Angry boy plus Sweet innocent girl equals Love story" but that was a great rec nonetheless 😂😂
I think she would like: a walk to remember
A thought the same think, but Kayla interpretation was so funny xD
Jamaica Inn would be good for this one if that is what she meant!
Fix her up...obvs ❤
I was thinking hate to love romance...
Eggplant related literature, I AM SCREAMING 😂😂😂😭😭😭😂😂😂
No one:
Kayla: stabby stab stab stab
😂
I have a reading challenge idea for you:
I was at GoodReads and noticed the "because you read..." and I thought that that might be a good idea; read all the "because you read/liked..." recommendations.
so - a recommendation chain:
Because you read The Raven Boys, you might like The Queen of Nothing
Because you read The Queen of Nothing, you might like Serpent & Dove
Because you read Serpent & Dove, you might like The Beautiful
Because you read The Beautiful, you might like A River of Royal Blood
Because you read A River of Royal Blood, you might like Eight Will Fall
Because you read Eight Will Fall, you might like Wicked As You Wish
Because you read Wicked As You Wish, you might like A Heart So Fierce and Broken...
Just choose a random amount of books
I died when Kayla asked if there was actually a search for eggplant related literature going on. Im literally dead.
For everyone who commented 👻🍆 just watch the movie Ghost.
or read thy fearful symmetry by audrey niffeneger! it includes a romance and a ghost story
Scary movie (2?)
Or watch American horror story lmao ghost dick indeed
Or read the webtoon "My Boo". I absolutely hated it, but if you like such stuff, it might be perfect.
Or the graphic novel Transparent Cohabitation lol
Kate meant
bad boy + good girl = love
Darnit!
@@BooksandLala but it is ok every emjoi has different mean
you know you’re a Kayla stan if you could guess the books she recommends before she even mentions them 😂
Kayla interpreting the emojis is like Lyra reading the alethiometer in His Dark Materials 😅
That’s actually a perfect recommendation for my emojis because I haven’t read The Raven Boys yet 🙈 Now I kind of have to!!
You haven't??? Omg PLEASE
Yes, you DO! It’s glorious, you’ll adore it!
Not an exact fit probably, BUT the emoji combo made me think of Gideon the Ninth, which is so very very good
Also A Curse So Dark and Lonley by Brigid Kemmerer might work!
also if you keep going and start the dreamer trilogy after the raven cycle, there are swords there, so all in the same universe
"The ghosts and eggplants are still haunting me"😂😂😂
For a good ghost-with-a-hint-of-romance story, I recommend “Anna Dressed in Blood” by Kendare Blake. It’s the first in a duology and I can confirm that they are both held to a similar standard of goodness. Some parts really hit the feels.
Izstrella omg I loved this!!! God it was...8 years ago...wow...
Megan Hultberg • Yeah, that’s the thing about great stories though; they stick with you.
Don't need notifications when I'm just constantly on youtube lol
Loved watching you matching books to the emojis! I was laughing so hard at you trying to figure out some of them. Would love to see you do more of these kind of videos.
I love your answer/interpretation for kate waaaay more than what she actually was requesting😂😂
Honestly, your recommendations and interpretations? A++++ an unwanted guest is actually perfect bc I wanted a thrilleresque read set during winter, and I’ve been debating giving Shari Lapena a chance so decision made!
4:14 I’d recommend “House” by Christina Lauren because it’s a sort of ghost story involving a romance 🤷🏻♀️ that’s the first thing that came to mind
I took Kate’s (KatSnark) as bad boy and nice girl romance 😂
thatgirlbookworm Same!
I love these type of videos ☺️ and your experimental reading vlogs I also like those a lot. Big fan of your videos for a couple of years now!
Eggplant related literature 😂😂
"The skull is *gets into battle stance*A CHOICE"
😂
Please do a video about your non-fiction recommendations!! Thank You for making videos and helping me start reading again!
This was so much fun to watch. Please do many more rounds of this emoji recommendation videos. Awesome.
Really loved what you did with this emoji video, I just wish I had known about it before you had done this so I could have joined in. Love what you’ve done with this and I found it great fun to watch
Every time you said ghost it just reminded me of that episode of friends where Joey was on a game show 😂
Sophie Randall Paper? Snow? A GHOST!!
I've only just discovered your channel and have been watching a few videos. I screamed 'The Seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle' the moment I saw those emojis and hearing you recommend it also. I am now a subscriber!
You are by far the most creative booktuber!
Summer of Salt is actually a fantastic pick! It’s always been on my radar and I haven’t had a chance to pick it up yet! I definitely will soon!
SamanthaPlans Thanks!! I’ll read that one too! It looks exactly like my vibe!!
I love this video idea so much, it’s so creative and fun 😌 and oh my gosh The Good Daughter is a book that’s super high on my TBR so that’s so crazy you recommended it for my emojis haha! Guess this means I have to read it now 😅
I'm about to start The Good Daughter Today. For those emojis, I would also suggest Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter.
Was waiting for this since I saw your tweet! Glad it’s already uploaded and I’m kinda early!!!
FOR GOATS: The Bone Houses by Emily Llyod-Jones
Kayla this is so wholesome I wanna hug u
I, and I imagine most people, would say the characters are the main reason.
Books with Ike • Ah, as I expected. Thanks!
Lisa 👻👹🏚🕯🔦🎞📺🍃🍂🍁😱👀 read Night Film by Marisha Pessl!
Amanda Ronquillo I thought of that one too of a head full of ghosts
House of Leaves
please let this be a series! i want to comment my input too and see what i get recommended i think it'll be such a fun experience for me!
I’m crying laughing from you saying “ghost dick.” 😂😂💀🍆👻🤣
We Set The Dark On Fire is a great rec for that emoji combo!
Also of course one of the recs was the Raven Boys
Lisa G’s emoji’s reminded me of The Turn of the Key!
Lala I am reading Daughters of the Lake and I see it on your good-reads to be read and I recommend it because its a mystery but it has a mythical magical part that causes a spooky vibe that leaves me with a creepy feeling!
Terrific choices!! I keep postponing Evelyn Castle 😅 - I’ve heard so many good things!
Confuzzled Bev I saw it as the good girl and bad boy falling in love!
Awesome and such a fun video like always Kayla!!!!! I was laughing so freaking much!!!!!
Kat says 💀🩸🔪🔪🔪🔪⚰️🤯
The Alienist
'Salems Lot by Stephen King (not so much the mind blown emoji)
I would recommend Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. Adult fantasy trilogy
then they were none by agatha christie
Sharp Objects
My TBR is already massive but I see a book recommendation video by you, must watch it. I guess it’s just gonna get a little bit bigger 😀. Also 👻🍆- the mammoth book of ghost romance, I haven’t read it all yet but it’s a ghost romance anthology
The hearts, Flowers, bread, etc I would recommend Bloom by Kevin Panetta
For camping, I would recommend Honor Girl by Maggie Thrash and Be prepared by Vera Brosgol, they're both graphic memoirs. To Nightowl from Dogfish by Holly Goldberg Sloan and Meg Wolitizer, a parent trap middle grade but it's gay.
6:00 for this one i would say station eleven by emily st. john mandel. it has pretty much everything except for the video games
Hi kayla, next time you watch a movie/series can you read a book(s) that is mentioned?
Dude. I'm literally doing a video concept like this in a few months. Get out of my head!! 😆
I had the best time just watching you try to read and interpret the emojis 😂
Release literally has a ghost and a water element that recommendation was spot on
Some people gave waaaaaaay too many emojis, poor Kayla!
That was pretty funny watching you figure out what to recommend! Tfs.
The emojis that xonikkee put made me think of a bakery centered romance, so my first thought was the graphic novel Bloom.
I bought the good daughter at the library book sale on your recommendation!!
Omg i love Dead Mountain! I recommend the audiobook!
Lisa G, I would recommend The Harrowing by Alexandra Sokolov. This fits every emoji you had.
For ghost "D" I recommend Shape of the Night by Tess Gerritsen LOL, there are a few scenes I was like Oh OK now lol
Omg I was just thinking this! It surprised me just how different this story was from her other books. Was not expecting it when I went into it but I enjoyed the journey.
Is there ghost Sex in the book? 😂
The book was awsome. But there was some parts that you’ll be like woah didnt expect that lol
Kayla! The Ring was originally based on a book, so your recommendation still works. Lol
But I haven't read it so I can't officially recommend!!
BooksandLala True true!
You did way better than I thought you would after seeing all the replies yesterday
For the second recommendation you can go with the first book in the Dark Hunters series by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Yes I love your recommendations videos!
Haileyinbookland was the one who’s done this similar video at least she’s the one I can think of!
Thank you!! I’ve been trying to decide which Shaun David Hutchinson book to start with and now I know. Sorry about the water haha. I meant for it to correlate to a seaside town lol. 🖤
Loved this! So funny! Great recommendations too.
Paranormal Urban series Women of the Other World by Kelley Armstrong. She is a a Canadian author.

The CREATIVE QUEEN™️ strikes again. 👏🏼
For Victoria: The Disasters (M. K. England) and Mirage (Somaiya Daud)
This was fun. I recently read VERGE: Stories by Lidia Yuknavitch. It's a short story collection and it's about people in awful situations who are resilient but it gets really werid. I did a poor job of describing it, but loved it. If you pick it up I hope you do too!

4:18 I’ve never laughed so hard!!!!!!!!
This was a fun video. I really enjoyed it!
For the one with a haunted house and ghosts and a tv and film and a demon, try Scream All Night by Derek Millman. The best way I’ve heard it described is Chuck Palaniuk for teens!

What a fun way to recommend books!
For allie I would recommend a court of thorns series
Ghost + teen romance : Dead Gorgeous by Malorie Blackman
I was going to recommend A House at the Bottom of a Lake for the ghost eggplants out there XD especially the one with the house
Nina the Mood Reader BRILLIANT
I read ‘In the Skin of a Monster’ by Kathryn Barker last year. It’s by an Australia author and is a young adult paranormal/horror/mystery. I was weird but I enjoyed it.
The ring is also a book! They can read the original!
LOVE THIS SO MUCH
We need a part 2 pls 🎃🖤
Ghost Eggplant: Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready, which I haven't read in a decade but remember being very fun. It's about a girl who's boyfriend dies and then haunts her while she goes on an adventure with another boy who can also see ghosts
Jake Does Books needs to read Dead Voices by Kathrine Arden. Middle grade. Fits the emojis perfectly.
Riley's camping love crying and death "The Grace Year" was pretty good
Omg I just listened to the Dyatlov Pass mystery today on a past episode of My Favorite Murder. Was Dead Mountain recommended to me by you through fate?! Yes.
For the slow burn, class clown recommendation Tweet Cute is a really great read for that!
I work at a library and I shelved The Silent Patient today! 😂
For Lisa G I thought of The Diviners by Libba Bray.
I also thought Charnel House by Graham Masterton
For the goat emojis: Three Bags Full
Its a murder mystery...sheep investigate the murder of their shepherd (not goats though )
