General Election 2019: Labour and Anti-Semitism - BBC News

  • The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has insisted there is no place for anti-Semitism in modern Britain and said those guilty of such racism in the Labour Party have been "brought to book". He was speaking after the Chief Rabbi accused him of allowing anti-Jewish racism to take root within Labour, and questioned his fitness to be prime minister. In an unprecedented break with convention, Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said he felt compelled to intervene because the "very soul of our nation was at stake". The Conservative Party also came under heavy criticism today, when the Muslim Council of Britain accused it of "denial, dismissal and deceit" on the issue of Islamophobia.
Also we continue our journey around the UK and the places where seats could change hands in this General Election. Tonight we’re in the Preseli Pembrokeshire constituency in south-west Wales, which has a very small Conservative majority and is a key target seat for the Labour party.
Tonight’s coverage on the BBC News at Ten comes from Laura Kuenssberg and Clive Myrie, and is presented by Huw Edwards.

Criticism of Israel and it's actions as a state is not anti-Semitism. It is just like criticising any other state for unreasonable actions like Russia, USA, and many others.

Zionism is a grassroots movement (movement of the people) which sought the creation of an independent Jewish state. To be anti Zionist is to oppose the notion of a Jewish state. Criticism of Israel crosses over into anti semitism when either all Jews are held responsible for the actions of Israel, or when traditionally anti Semitic images, symbols or theories are used in that criticism.
For instance, BDS movement is a movement that specifically targets Jewish business owners and not Arab Israeli business, despite both living past The Green Line. That's not a boycott on Israel, it's a boycott on Jews.

@Jigsaw John Not at all fella. I'm sure there are cases that needed to be investigated, and anti-Semitic issues. But throughout the news yesterday I failed to hear a single solid recent example of anti-Semitism that didn't involve being critical of the state of Israel, none (in recent news as far as I was aware) prejudice against Jewish people, their religious practices, or their general way of life.
If this seems ignorant I do apologise, I mean no malice or anger towards Jewish people. I just genuinely believe Jeremy Corbyn and the vast majority in the Labour party are sincere and hate any behaviour they have been accused of and it is very depressing to see someone I think to be an incredibly moral man brought down like this.

Allegations of antisemitism in the Labour Party of the United Kingdom (UK) have been made since Jeremy Corbyn was elected as leader of the party in September 2015. After comments by Naz Shah in 2014 and Ken Livingstone in 2016 resulted in their suspension from membership pending investigation, Corbyn established the Chakrabarti Inquiry, which concluded that the party was not "overrun by anti-Semitism or other forms of racism", although there was an "occasionally toxic atmosphere" and "clear evidence of ignorant attitudes".[1][2] The Home Affairs Select Committee of Parliament held an inquiry into antisemitism in the UK in the same year and found "no reliable, empirical evidence to support the notion that there is a higher prevalence of antisemitic attitudes within the Labour Party than any other political party", though the leadership's lack of action "risks lending force to allegations that elements of the Labour movement are institutionally antisemitic".[3]
In 2017, Labour Party rules were changed to make hate speech, including antisemitism, a disciplinary matter. In 2018, Corbyn was challenged for querying in 2012 the removal of Freedom for Humanity, an allegedly antisemitic mural, in response to a Facebook post from the artist,[4][5] and for having been a member of Facebook groups, mainly pro-Palestinian, containing antisemitic posts. In July of that year, Labour's National Executive Committee (NEC) adopted a definition of antisemitism, for disciplinary purposes, that included the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition, with modified examples relating to how criticism of Israel could stray into antisemitism.[6][7][8][9] In September of that year, the NEC added all 11 IHRA examples, unamended, to the definition of antisemitism, and included them in the Party's code of conduct.[10]
In February and July 2019, Labour issued information on investigations into complaints of antisemitism against individuals, with around 350 members resigning, being expelled or receiving formal warnings, equating to around 0.08% of the membership. Also in February 2019, nine MPs resigned from the party, citing Labour's leftward political direction and its handling of allegations of antisemitism and of Brexit - most of them then formed The Independent Group.[11][12][13][14] In May, the Equality and Human Rights Commission announced an inquiry into whether Labour had "unlawfully discriminated against, harassed or victimised people because they are Jewish". In July, the party published online educational material on combatting antisemitism and promoted it to all members.

BBC should be neutral. Personally, it is a ploy to try and criticize Corbyn (Corbyn has jewish ancestry) once again. He must get fed up. Anyone in Polictics should be there to help everyone and that is why they are voted in to do a job for their nation, not to differentiate and criticize each other, or defame. I think one has to be careful "calling" people when one is in a position of influence and set standards.

Kian Docherty when Jewish MPs feel they cannot remain a labour member like Ian Austin, like Luciana Berger and John Mann, all MPs who were labour members under past labour governments now leave its clear to see that anti Semitic behaviour has risen under Corbyn’s Labour Party, also at an conference talking about anti-semitism Ruth Smeeth decided to leave when she was thrown abuse at. It’s clear to see that the Labour Party has a problem with anti-semitism. Also when it’s known that Corbyn was there when a wreath was laid to the members of Black September who murdered 11 Jewish Olympians and a German police officer it speaks volumes about his personal anti-Semitic views

The game could be not showing their real intention, that they wanna have the say all by themselfs, and their not showing their real face, even if I think, it is an open book to read. It is easy for them to say how friendly and generous they are, as long they accumulate and keep power to themselfs. I have never heard Corbyn or a member of the Labour party express any view that could be even remotely considered anti-semitic. Please direct me to any source that will contradict my position. Now, if you are conflating criticism of Zionism and Israel with anti-jew opinions, there is no connection. Criticism of Zionism and Israel is perfectly acceptable, demonisation and hate filled opinions of individual Jews is not. I think all these accusations are baseless and simply a distraction from what is really going on in society, something which Corbyn and Labour actually address. How is any of this anti-semitic?

I say be clear about specific allegations and when proven true let's root out discrimination from politics. It's an ongoing battle. Anti Muslim hate doesn't get nearly as much coverage and is rampant, I've seen significant proof on this.
Sad that we have to fund the BBC for disproportionate coverage of politics. The BBC is biased.

Guys (BBC). Brexit is a concern for the whole country, yes. But antisemitism? just look at the posted comments below. If Islamophobia is a concern mainly for Muslims then that is accepted. Why should anybody else other than Muslims actually care about it. What I've just realised however is that my instinct toward how people perceive the concern about antisemitism is largely correct as well. Nobody cares aside from the people allegedly affected by it. And if being anti Israel is being anti semitic then I can show you a whole plethora of Jewish Rabbis who are anti Israeli at the same time. Peace out.

🔅Lifetime Labour Voter No Longer... Labour Is In Ruins🔅
Yet another reason why I can't in all good conscience vote for any Labour MP, I've always voted Labour but this will be the second general election where I feel like I'd be voting for the old Labour Michael foot and pro socialist friends, I can't put a tick next to that. Then there's the fact that he won't even say yes or no to the biggest question facing our country, plus he's made so many promises that would be funded through tax that it wouldn't be long until another treasury note reads "there's nothing left its all gone" again!! Come on its not hard don't make promises you can't keep or that will bankrupt us, and please focus on what's right for the country NOT your momentum pals!!!... So for the second time in a general election with a heavy heart but very sensible head I won't vote Labour... I hope they're happy the Labour Party is in ruins.
