I was lucky enough to be there when they recorded this. It was soo cool to watch. Dad is Hovak Alaverdyan. I had just met him that day, and have remained friends. He lives less than 3 miles from me...LOL Not actively in a band, but was in a super group that he arranged with Billy Sheehan and Victor Wooten for a project called Octavision. Ellen and YOYOKA had just met this day, had never practiced together, walk in to the studio, tune their respective instruments, do a sound check with the engineer and with no practice together as a group, proceeded to nail this on the first take (for the audio), they did a few other takes for the video portion. Ellen has been playing the bass, just a bit over 3 years now.
What a blast to witness this in person. It’s amazing how tight they were. I did a reaction video of Octavision a little while back without knowing Ellen was his daughter. It is so much fun watching her play with so much joy. She’s got quite a career in music waiting for her!
@@StrateleStudios Indeed! Hovak is devoting most of his time to helping her get a good start. They are like best friends. He started playing guitar to her since she was an infant in her crib. Both sets of parents (for Ellen and YOYOKA) have raised their kids in a similar manner. They expose them to music, then let them decide what they want to play, or if they even want to play. When YOYOKA was here, after she just arrived in the U.S. to live, first thing she said was "Can we go to the studio, I want to play drums really bad. I haven't played in 4 days!" You will find this humorous. I was telling YOYOKA what some of her nicknames were and when I said "The Human Metronome", she laughed and said "Yeah, my timing is not very good." Rob Yule and I just looked at each other and laughed. I guess if you mean "not good" as in "perfect" then I agree...LOL This is the type of thinking that drives musical geniuses to perfection! Ellen usually giggles at the end of a lot of her covers. I asked her if she was giggling in Armenian or English. She said Armenian"...LOL She's trying to form a band, but can't find a good drummer. YOYOKA is not available at this time. Sorry for rambling, but I just love these two girls! Like you say, great things in store for both of them! They have already accomplished more than most of us have in our whole lives...LOL

@@markdecker6190 Hi Mark, I'm not sure, I never asked. I have to think it was because of You Tube somehow. YOYOKA's dad (Aki) asked if I could drive them over to meet a 9 y.o. bassist. That's all he said. I know they had never met in person. Then "The Ocean" happened. lol Hovak put the whole thing together, did all the video recording, provided the lighting etc. He has his own studio, but it's just set up for himself and Ellen to perform together. The studio recording was handed over to Hovak, who did all the final production work. He has worked in the movie industry in Hollywood. Aki is a professional sound engineer also. When we got to their home studio, Aki and Hovak geeked out about the studio equipment, Ellen and YOYOKA went into Ellen's room to do "girl" things and do some drawings, and I played with the dog. I told the dog to sit and he just stared at me with a kind of stupid look. Ellen was watching and started laughing, then said "He doesn't understand English". I think the stupid look from the dog was for me, "Why don't you say something I can understand, you're speaking jibberish!" Then we went for ice cream, then to the studio. Neither girl was interested in practicing or nervous in the least. When we got to the studio, the other two were practicing and looked a bit nervous. During the recording session Aki was busy posting to social media or lining up gigs on his phone, who knows. It was like he's done this so many times he just had things to get done. Of course, he doesn't need to worry about YOYOKA's performance, he just expects that she will do her job with no need for supervision, and as well know this is exactly what she does time and time again. Sorry I couldn't really answer your specific question better.

According to an interview with Ellen and Yoyoka ,they only met that day and recorded it in one take , with no rehearsals. I read that they did 5 takes in all but used the first one

I read somewhere she is considered "the reincarnation of Bonham".
Yoyoka and Ellen are two of the most passionate and committed (young) musicians. Much respect for the effort they put into their music.

Mr. Hovak said the reason they nailed the audio in one take with very little rehearsal was the foundation laid down by Yoyoka. Everything else fell into place. Yoyoka has just returned from a tour of Japan performing with other professionals and giving drum clinics. 🥁 😊

Hovak Alaverdyan is an insane guitar player and obviously a great dad and teacher. Check out Octavision if you never heard of them. I love seeing young people with such talent and knowing that excellent musicianship is still there with us and into the future.

You might well enough continue with similiar band from UK. Brittish young school boys aged 12-14 years performing a cover song 'Square Hammer' from Swedish band Ghost. Considering their age, the singing harmonies are great. You'll get armfull of joy!

Ellen's Dad is Hovak Alaverdyan. Only Hovac was operating camera so there were many takes for video. I don't think anyone other than Hovac knows which take for audio. Oh yeah I’ve seen Aaron many times. He’s such an incredible player even at this young age. I can’t wait to see what he will turn out to sound like in his 20s.
The real issue for drummers is that they don't get the recognition they deserve. Even when they do, still doesn't mean much. If you look at Buddy Rich, yeah, great drummer, but a super jerkoff. No one could play with him in a band because of his ego. Joe Morello was a much better drummer than Buddy Rich was in that respect.
Yoyoka will really hit it out of the park once she sets her sticks down and gets off the drum throne. When she gets a little better at English, smooth out the japanese accent and be a frontman for a band. Just like Don Henely.
Everyone knows who Don Henley is, but had he not did what Phil Collins did, no one would have really known who he was.
Like Jeff Pocaro, he was the glue that really held Toto together after Boz Scaggs. People know who Toto is, but unless you are a musician, chances are, you will not know who Jeff Pocaro was.
Senre Kawaguchi is a fantastic drummer, one of the best out there. Proably, the most talented drummer on the planet. No one knows who she is. This is not to take away from Yoyoka, she is right behind Senri in terms of talent. There are only a few female drummers who you could put in the talent conversation with Senri and Yoyoka. One of them is Alexey Poblete, she every bit as talented as Yoyoka is as a drummer, but no one knows her either. Things didn't pan out with her Nickelodian gig.
The sad thing is that the music industry is scraping the bottom. Almost all of their artists are talentless hacks like Taylor Swift, Beyonce, etc, etc. Turn off the autotune, voice enhancements and what do you have left? A talentless entertainer.
Same four cords rehashed over and over and over again, canned drums, pre programmed bass and guitar riffs. What does this mean? The record labels, if you want to call them that are not spending any money on making albums. They want to cap an album out at $10-20k tops and call it a day.
No more albums in the six to seven figure days with really engineered and produced tracks.
The real ironic thing it that the labels tell us how talented there current stable of talented musicians are, with Taylor swift selling so many albums and Boynce having so many grammys, yawn.
What do the numbers say? Well over 80% of the label revenue is from their catalogues. Very little of it comes from their musical puppets.
They claim that no one buys albums, but on the other side of their mouth, they have record album sales like never before. Just like K West. Multi billionaire according to the record label world. Runs into some trouble and he goes from prince to pauper in less than a month.
As long as the listening public is willing to listen to rock classics, this trend is going to continue. Once traditional rock music becomes oldies, and they music companies can no longer keep reguritating the same songs over and over again, then things will change.
You need real writers like Paul Williams, PF Sloan and others and a coral of talent like the wrecking crew to crank the tunes out again.
Maybe, we will see that kind of music machine again. The talent is certainly out there, but it is totally ignored by the music industry. They have their own agenda which differs totally from what the listening public wants.
Like in Yoyoka's case, once she gets into it, she could do the Van Halen thing and rework some old rock tunes to start. Then put some originals out. But if you look at a band like Liliac, a very talented band. You talk about a raspy voice, their lead singer, Melody Cristea is a true contralto. They open for major rock bands, but have not been picked up by a label. They have their own music, but their chances of getting airtime is slim to none.
I just mention Liliac as they are a family band and have been together for a number of years and are playing on a national level, but litte recognition. If this was forty years ago, they would consistently be a top forty band.
Sadly, the music executive icons have tried promoting other young musicians similar in age to both Yoyoka and Ellen. Musicians with no where near the talent levels of either Yoyoka or Ellen. You watch these kids go up on stage and they play like kids. You put Yoyoka up on stage and she plays like the professional musician she is.
I just hope that the really dedicated young musicians like Ellen and Yoyoka can do something to change music, but they will have to do a lot more than just put musical talent on the table. They will have to do a deeper dive and do something on a business level to bring about change. This even includes breaking the back of ticket master and the strangle hold they have as gate keepers to musical events.
Kind of funny how Pearl Jam did a work around Ticketmaster. They did their remake of the J Frank Wilson hit at the height of their succes and Eddie Vetter said that they would never go through Ticketmaster and what happened?
Anyway, sorry for the venting. Yoyoka and her family just moved again up in the Hollywood area. They found something a little more where they can put a music studio together.
They are going in the right direction as they are close to Laurel Canyon. Maybe, the stars will align and they can start cranking out hit after hit, let's hope.
