  • Ho ho ho… steady… aurite! This timelapse edit shows the precise work and careful coordination that goes into transporting and installing our large City Lights displays. Including Shaka Santa! Measuring 21-feet tall, Shaka Santa and Tūtū Mele were placed in their customary spots this morning on the Honolulu Hale fountain. City crews will continue to install holiday displays throughout the week, and the Honolulu City Lights will officially open to the public on Saturday, December 3, 2022. Kapolei City Lights begins the following weekend, Saturday, December 10, with a block party at 5 PM and parade at 6 PM. More info online at bit.ly/kapoleicitylights
The Shaka Santa sculpture, with his iconic shaka, has been a staple of Honolulu City Lights since 1989. Created in 1994, Tūtū Mele received an aloha-inspired makeover in 1998, adopting the new moniker and replacing her North Pole attire with a floral-print mu‘umu‘u, kukui nut lei, and Hawaiian bracelet.
