2024 Tesla Cybertruck Review | Tesla's Latest EV Is An OK Truck With A Shocking Design

  • As a truck and as a modern EV, the Tesla Cybertruck doesn't "wow" as much as some had hoped. It's not the longest range truck, or the biggest, the fastest charging, or the most off-road oriented. It doesn't have the biggest bed, biggest frunk, or biggest battery. But it does have a love it or hate it style that's about as in your face as it can get.

Whew, made it. I was wondering if you would call out the poor forward visibility and you got it right in at the end. The more raked a windsheild is the more impeded forward visibility is, and that is the one place you need good visibility. First time i discovered that was in 2010 with the 3rd gen Prius. Not only did it create a tunnel vision effect with the massive A pillars but it also made it more difficult to judge where the front of the car was. I can only imagine how disorientating the cybertruck is upon first drive but I guess you adjust over time.

I have seen/inspected up close the cyber truck in the flesh at a Tesla service/delivery center, it’s interesting. The CT actually does not use NACS it uses the supercharging protocol (over CAN). not the PLC communication (CCS) that NACS calls for. A small nuance that Tesla does not use NACS on their own vehicles but their own protocol which has the capability of communicating with CCS over pLC (but generally speaking it is communicating with superchargers over CAN which is not part of NACS protocol)

So add in reliability and all that extra instant torque. Hard not to want this unless you're just stuck in the past or afraid your bros will shun you for going electric.

I like the Cybertruck a lot more than I thought I would, and I think they look a lot better/more interesting in person - the gloss on the steel panels is much more impressive in person - but I'm singularly underwhelmed.
I guess the big issue I have with it is that it doesn't seem to really offer anything new over the competition. Same range as trucks that are years older, similar towing and bed capacity, nothing particularly innovative about the software.
Contrast this with something like the Ioniq 5 N vs the Mach-E. The Ioniq 5 N gives you TONS of performance-related software options over the Mach-E (simulated gear shifting, front-back power distribution, etc.). I can forgive the Mach-E for this since it's so much older, and hopefully it'll get similar options whenever it gets a refresh, but the Cybertruck is more or less just a weird-looking F-150 Lightning.
Given the huge lead time the F-150 had, the Cybertruck just feels disappointing in comparison, and I would've been very frustrated if I'd waited all these years for my new truck just to get the same thing I could have had earlier.

Nicely done Alex. The Cybertruck has been so polarizing that it is easy to fall down the hate rabbit hole or love it blindly mindset.
I do think Tesla delivered something unique and should be praised for not just making another cookie cutter looking truck. There is great tech with it, but typical Tesla, releasing a solid foundation that needs more polish. The 2018 Model 3 was a solid foundation, but it was all the polishing/updates Tesla did over the years that made the Model 3 really good before they did the refresh. The 2024 Model 3 is considered by many one of the best sedans you can buy today for the money.
I am thankful for early Cybertruck buyers, because they are helping to finish the development of the Cybertruck. If I was to buy one, it would be a couple of years from now so the updates and fixes will get done before I buy it. Prices will come down as well.
Looking forward to EV truck comparison video. Maybe in 2027 revisit rhe Cybertruck.

Great video Alex. Appreciate the effort you put into this lengthy review. You know I couldn't help but to think that maybe a Cybertruck is a bit like a fancy high heel. Looks good to the right person, but most people want to get out of them as soon as possible. As to the size - I have a lifted Wrangler Rubicon on 35s and when I was parked next to one of these I was shocked that my Wrangler was taller and just had more road presence. I think people might be surprised at how small the CT is in person. The interior looks quite unfinished. I feel like it is very much a prototype. Each to there own I suppose.

I watched the whole video at 1x and loved it! What a great and balanced review. A lot of reviewers have been distracted by the look of the vehicle (positive and negative) and I really liked how you spoke about what it would be like to live with it without subjective commentary on the appearance inside or out .
On the battery pack energy, Sandy Monroe said the battery is only half populated so I think your comment on the price point might well be correct though I wonder if their 4680 manufacturing is not up to speed yet to fully populate the packs.
On the EPA rating for range I always get mixed feelings. I don’t blame Tesla for gaming the ranking system better than other EV manufacturers (who may just be attempting to be honest by voluntarily lowering their range value). I blame the EPA for letting what was an efficiency test designed in the 1970s-1980s for gas cars with no regen breaking (lots of stop and go to stress the ICE design!) as a mechanism to rate the range of an EV at 70mph as you alluded to. It just was never the purpose of an efficiency test for gas cars to apply to the range of an EV. Anyways I’m sure this comment will be read by no one but i felt like writing it. Thanks again for your awesome review.

Dear Travis, in this video Alex says that is hard to see cylists and motocyclists close to the sides of Cybertruck, due to to shape of his car body. And you defined "valid" my concern about sharp angles - sharp edges - of Cybertruck related with impact consequences possibly occurred with cyclists and motorcyclist themselves. So we have: 1) more chances to hurt them for visibility issues 2) more serious wounds in the quoted event. As we see, two factors that contributes each other to provoke and aggravate accidents. But there are or not regulations about ways to build car in that perspective? For instance, since many years we no longer have sharp domestic objects in our homes. Speaking back about cars, in Europe exist an indipendent company - EuroNcap, recognized by governments - that assign stars to the car behavior in event of crash against pedestrians. Why do all reviewers refer to batteries as being "larger" or "smaller"? Its CAPACITY that the number represents. I know that you know this, but it's misleading to those who don't know much about batteries because you could technically have a 200kWh battery that is "smaller" than a 100kWh battery if the energy density it greater. That needs to be talked about more and it's not.
