  • In this video we'll be going over a bunch of different methods for relighting 2D images. We'll be using a couple of free applications (omnidata, gimp, unscayl, to help get set up for this process, and then use Affinity Photo to control the lighting direction for further compositing. I hope this video proves useful to a lot of people out there! If you have you're own method, please feel free to share it with me. Enjoy!

No worries! Thanks for watching :) With the way AI has been advancing over the last year, I'm really suprised that a workflow like this isn't at the forefront. They even just added depth maps to Stable Diffusion, but I would have thought something like this would be way more useful. Just want I high detail and high resolution of this and then I'll be happy haha

That is a lot of work to get the same effect by just selecting the figure, making a pixel layer, filling it black and then bringing in the highlights by masking and painting over the image in various opacities. Hopefully the tools get easier but right now I can do a whole scene in a couple of minutes the olde school way.

That's fair. I guess I was just really excited about using some 3D concepts with 2D images. Since making this video, an extension came out for Stable Diffusion that let you create both normal maps and depth maps in much better quality than these. You could even animate the images within Automatic1111, or export it to Blender or Affinity for further editing. It was pretty great, but with the more recent updates it looks like they extension creator stopped maintaining it and now it doesn't work, which is a real shame. There's also the new SwitchLight web app, which is paid. It produces normal, albedo, roughness, depth, etc. and offers up a heap of tools to relight images and remove backgrounds from subjects. It's probably the best I've seen, and right now they're in a closed beta for a desktop version of their app. You need 8GB of VRAM to run it though, so I didn't qualify for it. All said and down, I'm really excited to see where the future of photo editing takes us. I know a lot of focus right now in the AI world is to produce original images, but I'm more interested in being able to manipulate existing images, change poses, lighting, expressions, etc. Thanks for tuning in btw :)

It is a really advanced technique for me. But really cool. Hope someday I will catch up.

Good god bro. How long does it take you to make a video like this? Planning, filming, and editing. Your content is Fantastic quality

Thanks so much! I've been planning this video for a very long time, but the whole thing probably took a day or two to make. That said, I did make it, then scrap it, and completely redo it. So yeah, a lot of work and I'm still not fully satisfied with how it turned out, but I'm gald it's finally done :)

The timestamps alone must have taken an hour

Haha yeah that took a bit. Just want to make sure people are able to find where they are up to if they decide to follow along.
