  • My final thoughts and takeaways building the massive 11,885 piece Mould King ISD Monarch. Part 1 is an overview and some positive notes. Part 2 will include some small gripes and final thoughts. I also have short videos of each section (22 in total) that will be uploaded to show some inside views, thoughts at each point, etc.
    UPDATE: This set appears to be based on the Rebrickable MOC designed by ONECASE. Please consider supporting this awesome creator via his webpage:

    Awesome build! I have been a huge Lego fan for years. The problem I have with Lego is the cost and availability of some sets. Over the last 3 or 4 years I have been buying the non-lego sets such as Mould King, Lepin, etc... and to be completely honest I will more than likely keep buying the non-lego sets. Aside of some minor details on the mini figs and missing Lego imprint on the studs, Most people that view my collection can't tell the difference. I am currently building the 12,000+ piece Millennium Falcon with the full interior from Mould King and I am very please. I paid about $280 including shipping. Lego wants a minimum of $700 for their version, but its only 7,000+ pieces and not nearly as nice or as detailed. Currently I have about 150+ sets, all Star Wars, and I would say about 75% of those sets are non-Lego.
    Oh and you are absolutely correct about the tool Mould King provides! I LOVE the hammer! Especially for the larger sets and parts like you said! Keep up the great work on your videos.

      @jcrowsm3 Thanks so much for the kind words! I am much like you, I find myself going more and more to non-lego sources for the bigger and more diverse builds you find in the other brands compared to Lego. Cost as well as the simple improvements and added design features truly are one of the best reasons for the non-Lego brands and quality for me has not been an issue on any of the sets. If you don't mind me asking where did you find such a great deal on that 12K Millennium Falcon set? I have been mulling that one over for quite a while haha!

      Agreed!! Just got the Islet Bar from Mould King that was almost 4K pieces and included the lighting for $120. Lego that would cost $400 easy and no lighting. Another great brand is FunWhole. They even integrate the lighting and wiring into the instructions. Top notch!

  • @silverado4x

    Thanks for giving onecase a shout-out and buying his instructions. I'm torn on these sets. If Lego isn't going to make them. I'm glad someone does. Star Wars IP aside. But, the thing I'm frustrated about is they don't compensate the original designers! I'm glad you did. Another guy here on CZcams had a video similar to yours and when I asked if he paid onecase for the instructions, he asked who that was when I told him he ignored me. Thanks again!

    • @OldNSurly
      @OldNSurly  Před rokem +2

      Thanks for the comment! It's funny as after buying the Mould King I was googling the Monarch name to see if there were any reviews or instructions online and that is how I found out about Onecase and realized what they had done by leveraging his MOC design. I was surprised to see how many of those types of things occur in the non-lego sets (so many refer to bricklink or MOC). The ironic thing is that due to the sheer number and cost of actual lego pieces to build the Onecase Monarch, I might have never tried it without the Mould king set being available.
      It seems to me that the non-lego world would make a killing if they simply worked with and actually compensated these MOC builders for the designs and then could get even more advertisement and visibility for both sides (company and MOC creators)! After building this it has made me be a little more cautious on non-lego that refer to MOC or bricklink and I try to find the original instructions/creator where possible.
      I am thinking of doing less core Lego sets and focusing videos more on Rebrickable, Bricklink and other MOC sites/designers to spotlight some of these amazing designs and start getting more visibility to these great designers that work so hard. It may not do much, but perhaps it gets a few more buyers or donations to keep doing these great MOCs.

      LoL yeah, this thing is a beast both during and after build! I will say though, it has to be one of the best finished builds I have ever seen and there is no way I could have afforded to do it with Lego pieces, Mould King was the only way to go (290 bucks versus thousands via Bricklink Legos). The numbered bags like actual Lego sets are a lifesaver compared to many non-lego generic bags in generic parts (which would have killed me) for many clones.

    • @OldNSurly
      @OldNSurly  Před rokem +2

      Hi Warren! So I ended up using a couple of clear bands on the front tips to help align them and keep them from seperating. At first it was just a temporary hold during the build, but honestly once I got the build in place in the living room, they were practically invisible so I left them haha. I agree about wishing the docking bay could be better displayed (perhaps to have them tractor beaming in the Tantive IV), but short of putting it on a higher display (which then would kind of hide all the beauty of the top), I am stumped. Perhaps some sort of angled display like some users do for the Millenium Falcon UCS? Although that is ALOT of weight to try to prop at an angle, I can only imagine watching it tip over or the top sections detach in a horror movie slow motion haha! How did you decide to display yours?

    • @urispas2
      @urispas2 Před rokem +2

      @@OldNSurly I'm using a 38"x57" Ikea Kallax shelf to display it. Just barely fits widthwise, but easily accessible for the annual dusting. I got mine from a shop on aliexpress, and none of the bags corresponded to the instructions! So imagine having to sort 12,000 lego pieces before you start. This thing was almost not even made because it was too tedious to sort. But you're right, the price can't be beat. Bought the instructions from Onecase out of sheer appreciation.

    • @OldNSurly
      @OldNSurly  Před rokem +1

      @@urispas2 That sounds like a great solution! I used a side table that is in the corner of the living room so you walk in and stare at a star destroyer when you sit down haha. I recently did an Ali Express clone of the UCS AT-AT and it was that same un-numbered chaos (though less pieces than you suffered with). That literally filled my kitchen table and counter up with plastic bowls full of pieces and as you said, took longer to organize than build. I almost threw in the towel, but after all that effort I had to finish it haha.

      @urispas2 Před rokem +1

      @@OldNSurly isn’t that funny. I also bought a UCS clone of the AT-AT from aliexpress, but the bags matched up to the instructions perfectly. It’s the copy of the official lego set, not the AT-AT moc by richboyjae. Anyways, the money I saved buying the clone went towards a whole lot of extra tiles. I completely reskinned the AT-AT and now looks more like the First Order AT-AT.

I was very pleasantly surprised as they have excellent texture, plastic quality and hold. Even the instructions were far better than I feared they would be. I think some of these larger non-lego companies have stepped up their game recently and see the value of quality improvements to capture more of the LEGO community (as the prices go up on LEGO, more folks will look elsewhere). There is just no way I could have afforded building this set in actual LEGO at current market prices. I mention buying instructions in the video only for those that want to help out the original creator of this build (onecase) as I am not sure if Mould King bought the rights to use it. I did build it from the Mould King instructions originally and had no major issues with them other than a few pieces were a little hard to determine position on the pictures.

    Can it be lighted?

    • @OldNSurly
      @OldNSurly  Před rokem +1

      Hello! I believe it could be with minimal issue. Most lighting kits out there are simple insert between the bricks and routing the wire inside the build. However if I were to do that, I would recommend getting the lights and planning the locations before you build the kit as it would be a severe pain to have to disassemble the different areas to do it later.
      I do think that I may look for a small light kit that I could route through the engines to highlight the blue color bricks. That may be a fairly easy mod as the engines can be removed without having to do any major section break down. The only hitch may be where to put the wiring and battery pack (although the top section lifts off easily so that may be the best option). You have me thinking now haha!

      @OldNSurly  Před rokem +1

      Hi David! So this build is actually bigger than the lego UCS star destroyer, and it appears to end up being about a 1:1455 scale based on calculations made by a Rebrickable MOC builder. He actually has created a number of lego ship builds that are at the proper scale for this destroyer so that you can add other Imperial and rebel fleet ships that are proportioned correctly, even some fighters! Here is a link to his page:
      rebrickable.com/users/Kdapt-Preacher/mocs/
      I have already started ordering parts to build some of these and can't wait to expand the Monarch's imperial support fleet haha!

      @@OldNSurly , yes, thanks. I wish you every success! To be candid, the innumerable Lego studs spoil the accuracy of the model for me. I lack the strength and the joint capacity to wield such a beast! (I would use the Force, but--aww, I just keep dozing off! SMH!)
      As a comparison, the AMT, Polar Lights, Round 2 kits of the last three Starships Enterprise (C, D, E) are in 1:1400th scale.
      Let me guess: your next project will be designing and building Emperor Palpatine's (Ian McDiarmid) super star destroyer, as we saw in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980, 20th Century Fox, Irvin Kershner, John Williams) in the same scale, right?
      Then the Death Star of Yavin IV in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977, 20th Century Fox, George Lucas, John Williams).
      After that, the much larger replacement yet under construction, which in actuality was a "fully armed and operational battle station!", in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983, 20th Century Fox, Richard Marquand, John Williams)?

      @@DavidRLentz I love your post! That is such a great vision of trying to build these large scale items to a more accurate scale has always been a dream of mine as well. Ever since seeing the first scroll of Star Wars and the seemingly never ending star destroyer chasing the rebels, I was hooked. I have to say the imperial and clone ships are my favorite (perhaps due to my military background, I prefer the sheer variety and combat oriented items, plus the storm troopers are simply a sight to behold). I thought similarly about trying to reduce even more the visible studs to truly polish off this build, I was just so wiped out after 40 days of building I threw in the towel and just followed the instructions haha.
      I would love to build the executor in a correct scale but from what I researched the ship was 19000 meters to the star destroyer's 1600 I would have a 60+ foot Executor in my house (time to knock out some walls)! If you see an error message that says "Too many subscriptions," you've reached your subscription limit. You can only subscribe to 75 channels per day. In general, you can subscribe to a maximum of 2,000 channels.
      It may be that you have hit your maximum of 2000 subscriptions on your account or that you subscribed to a large amount in one day? You may have to unsubscribe from some to add more. I am probably close to that limit myself haha, I always find so many interesting channels out there, especially for Lego builds. I hope that helps and I have some age related vision issues, so I can sympathize with how straining technology can be to folks with vision concerns!

      Thanks for the feedback on the subscriptions.
      I subsequently found something new: some eastern European modelbuilder (I could not find a name) posts a build of Zvezda's 1:2700th-scale kit of the Imperial Star Destroyer. He even illuminates the interior, fenestration, drive exhausts, hangar bay, etc. For all the windows he used "less than 12 parsecs" of fibre optics.

      Hello! Good points! What I was referring to was if a user bought the actual instructions that are on rebrickable (Monarch makes this non-lego set, but they are based off of the instructions made by a person (onecase). On Rebrickable, the site provides the full inventory of parts from LEGO that does go into the thousands of dollars if bought that way. Unless you have a large Lego inventory on hand (which I don't) then this Mould King kit is the best way to go by far. Most folks would not have the on hand Lego pieces (some are rare/pricey) so going the Mould King route is the best/only way to get some of these pieces easily and at a far better price. I did still pay for the Rebrickable instructions even thought I bought the Mould King set, just because I don't think the Lego Clones normally pay the actual designers of Rebrickable MOC instructions, so felt that they definitely deserved it for making such a major build. I wish I was wealthy enough to be able to afford all those Legos haha! Have you tried building this set yet? Thinking about doing it? Have a great day!
