3 tips on freestyle kick to help you swim faster

  • To help you swim faster freestyle we will go over 3 small details of freestyle kick that can make a big difference.
    The first is the form.
    The second is tempo.
    The third is the transition.
    The form of your freestyle kick will determine how fast you can move. To have a very effective kick you need to have amazing ankle flexibility. The more you have the less drag you will create. And the opposite is true, just look how I don’t move with my ankles like this. Also the knees need to be a little bent while going down and straight while going up. To do this you need to relax your hamstrings and activate your quads while the leg goes down and while it is going up activate your glutes, hamstrings, and calves.
    After you learn to have a good form when kicking you need to perfect the tempo of your kick. This can vary depending on the distance you are swimming but the most common tempo is 6 kicks for every 2 strokes. That is 3 kicks with one leg while one arm does one stroke cycle. The timing of the kicks is very important too. Because of the rotation and the movement of the muscles in your core, it is better if the right leg goes down when the left arm enters the water. while it is gliding you do another kick and use that momentum to start the pull while the leg comes down again.
    When you swim freestyle, the most effective thing you can do after the turn is to do several butterfly or dolphin underwater kicks. This carries the speed of your push. but the problem most people have is they lose that speed in the transition from uw kicks to freestyle kicks. The first few freestyle kicks are extremely important. They need to be fast and they need to start before the arms start moving. This also relates to the breakout video we did a while ago. check it out here in the info card.

    Comment of the week is from S Jan who asks “is there a training guide for those able to swim but start training for the first time?” The answer is yes, but not yet. We will come up with training programs for everyone soon. Stay tuned.

    Everybody writes to not bend knees then they actually bend them on videos. Good that I found video where somebody actually said to bend them slightly when going down. IT looks easy, but I have hard time with this.

      @runnerfive972 Před 4 lety +1

      no, its actually true, you shouldnt bend the legs but its extremely hard to do as a human in water with balance and stability being everything you contend with in a swimming stroke. ive tried to find the video someone made with a mechanical leg to show perfectly locked and straight legs and the propell power it creates in the wake, its without a doubt clearly stronger and faster. If you can emulate this . . .you just found seconds a length for free.

      That would be just about all hip flexor power if you didn't bend the knee at all

    • @marielr2029
      @marielr2029 Před 4 lety +4

      In my experience instructors will tell people not to bend the knee cause they don't want people to bicycle kick. But it is actually really important to have that slight bend in the knee to create that powerful downbeat, so it's a matter of telling people how to bend correctly.

    Correct me if I’m wrong but from what I observe, Caeleb Dressel starts his breakout pull very early and does about two underwater kicks while his arm is going back. He also has one of the best breakouts in the world. I’ve tried it and it’s very effective when done right

    The most helpful thing for me was syncing my kicks with my arms. This is the only video I've found that actually gives this as advice. It took a week because retraining muscle memory isn't fun but it took around .5 seconds off my 50 free. In my opinion it's worth making a video on. My coach and I had to make up drills ourselves to help me learn it.

    - while a leg is going down, knees should be slightly bent.
    - while going up, knees should be straight.

    I might have missed this one. Me, and my 'shoulders drive the body rotation, not the hips drive the shoulders..... Trying to remember if this came before the 4 ways to swim freestyle or not. For sure there is a 'power' kick with the 6 beat kick, or a surge kick as Gary Hall calls it. This kick anchors on the pulling arm, which is how you instructed with your Boat style of freestyle. Your power kick comes with your arm at about 90 degrees through the arc of the pull. Some seem to do this at about 25 or so degrees. The slow mo shows this starting at about 1:20.

      Hi. This comment is ab three months old but, tempo trainers can help with your kicking tempo, overtime you're supposed to kick you hear a beep. All of your kicks on the tempo trainer are measured in BPM (beats per minute)
      Hopefully that helped.
      :)

    it looks so easy...but when i'm in the water i forget everything. I'm a runner, when i'm running and get tired, i used to breath faster but only for my nose, but swimming its so hard to me to breath more when i got tired, 'cause isn't easy do it faster, maybe just this sport is not for me.

      Friend, the only thing I can say is that you have patience. I tell you, when I started swimming I was 14 years old, I had never swum in my life before and I wanted to compete to be a good swimmer, at first it was difficult and many times I thought about giving up swimming but it was little by little, with LOTS of EFFORT and I want to be good that I started to improve. go down all my times, I started winning races and I'm still improving, I'm currently 16 years old and I compete with other guys who have swum since I was 6 years old and I'm at their level and I go for more, training every day with a lot of motivation.

      Same here. I watched a video on YT about breath control while swimming. Turns out you shouldn't try to fill up your lungs when you start. Fill up "normal", start swimming. When you go for a breath only take a quick breath. Don't try to breathe in too much. This helped me a lot.

I can float on the water easily. I do back strokes pretty well. But when it comes to kicking and free style while head inside the water , after a specific distance ( half almost ) I don't feel myself moving ! What could possibly be wrong ? I bend my knees slightly , and I try to make fast kicks

    이번 주의 댓글은 S Jan의 "헤엄칠 줄 알지만 훈련은 처음 시작하는 사람들을 위한 훈련 가이드가 있을까요?"라는 질문입니다. 그에 대한 답은 네, 그렇지만 아직 아니오입니다. 우리는 곧 모든 사람을 위한 훈련 프로그램을 내놓을 계획입니다. 기대해주세요.

      To help you swim faster
      여러분이 빠르게 헤엄치는 데 도움이 되고자
      2
      00:00:02,236 --> 00:00:08,449
      we will go over 3 small details of freestyle kick that can make a big difference.
      큰 차이를 만들 수 있는 자유형 차기의 세 가지 세부사항을 살펴보겠습니다.
      3
      00:00:12,152 --> 00:00:12,765
      Form.
      자세.
      4
      00:00:12,808 --> 00:00:13,591
      Tempo.
      박자.
      5
      00:00:13,616 --> 00:00:14,305
      Transition.
      전환.
      6
      00:00:16,026 --> 00:00:20,947
      The form of your freestyle kick will determine how fast you can move.
      차는 자세가 당신이 얼마나 빨리 갈 수 있는가를 결정합니다.
      7
      00:00:21,105 --> 00:00:26,496
      To have a very effective kick you need to have amazing ankle flexibility.
      아주 효율적으로 차려면 발목 유연성이 훌륭해야 합니다.
      8
      00:00:26,584 --> 00:00:30,244
      The more you have the less drag you will create.
      발목 유연성이 좋을수록 발생하는 저항은 더 적어집니다.
      9
      00:00:30,269 --> 00:00:32,199
      And the opposite is true.
      그 반대도 또한 참입니다.
      10
      00:00:32,224 --> 00:00:36,411
      Just look how I don’t move with my ankles like this.
      보시다시피 제가 발목을 이렇게 하면 전혀 움직이지 못합니다.
      11
      00:00:36,502 --> 00:00:43,644
      Also the knees need to be a little bent while going down and straight while going up.
      또한 무릎은 아래로 찰 때는 약간 구부려야 하고 위로 찰 때는 펴야 합니다.
      12
      00:00:43,780 --> 00:00:50,551
      To do this you need to relax your hamstrings and activate your quads while the leg goes down
      그렇게 하려면 다리가 내려갈 때 뒤넙다리근육은 이완해야 하고 넙다리네갈래근을 활성화해야 합니다
      13
      00:00:50,616 --> 00:00:55,597
      and while it is going up activate your glutes, hamstrings, and calves.
      그리고 다리가 올라갈 때는 엉덩이 근육, 뒤넙다리근육, 그리고 종아리 근육을 활성화해야 합니다.
      14
      00:00:55,691 --> 00:00:59,017
      After you learn to have a good form when kicking,
      좋은 자세로 차는 법을 배운 다음에는,
      15
      00:00:59,097 --> 00:01:01,853
      you need to perfect the tempo of your kick.
      차는 박자를 숙달해야 합니다.
      16
      00:01:01,932 --> 00:01:05,440
      This can vary depending on the distance you are swimming.
      차는 박자는 헤엄치는 거리에 따라 달라질 수 있습니다.
      17
      00:01:05,468 --> 00:01:09,820
      But the most common tempo is 6 kicks for every 2 strokes.
      그렇지만 가장 일반적인 박자는 팔 돌리기 2 번마다 6번 차기입니다.
      18
      00:01:09,929 --> 00:01:15,847
      That is 3 kicks with one leg while one arm does one stroke cycle.
      즉 팔 한쪽이 한 번 돌아가는 동안 한쪽 다리로 3번 차게 됩니다.
      19
      00:01:15,946 --> 00:01:19,219
      The timing of the kicks is very important too.
      차는 때 맞춤(timing, 타이밍) 또한 아주 중요합니다.
      20
      00:01:19,314 --> 00:01:23,357
      Because of the rotation and the movement of the muscles in your core,
      몸체 회전과 몸체 중심부 근육군(core, 코어)의 움직임 때문에,
      21
      00:01:23,404 --> 00:01:28,755
      it is better if the right leg goes down when the left arm enters the water.
      왼쪽 팔이 물에 들어갈 때 오른쪽 다리를 아래로 차는 것이 더 낫습니다.
      22
      00:01:28,880 --> 00:01:37,222
      While it is gliding you do another kick and use that momentum to start the pull while the leg comes down again.
      왼팔이 활강하는 동안 한 번 더 차세요 그리고 오른쪽 다리가 다시 내려올 때 그 타력을 이용하여 당기기 시작하십시오.
      23
      00:01:37,342 --> 00:01:45,564
      When you swim freestyle, the most effective thing you can do after the turn is to do several dolphin or butterfly underwater kicks.
      자유형으로 헤엄칠 때, 벽 되돌기 후 당신이 할 수 있는 가장 효과적인 것은 물속 돌고래 즉 접영 차기를 몇 번 하는 것입니다.
      24
      00:01:45,619 --> 00:01:48,689
      This carries the speed of your push.
      이를 통해 벽을 밀고 나온 속도를 살리게 됩니다.
      25
      00:01:48,784 --> 00:01:56,575
      But the problem most people have is that they lose that speed in the transition from uw kicks to freestyle kicks.
      그렇지만 대부분의 사람들이 보이는 문제점은 물속 돌고래 차기에서 자유형 차기로 전환하면서 속도가 죽는다는 것입니다.
      26
      00:01:56,664 --> 00:02:00,461
      The first few freestyle kicks are very important.
      처음 몇 번의 자유형 차기가 아주 중요합니다.
      27
      00:02:00,612 --> 00:02:05,417
      They need to be fast and they need to start before the arms start moving.
      첫 자유형 차기는 빨라야 하고 팔이 움직이기 시작하기 전에 시작해야 합니다.
      28
      00:02:05,442 --> 00:02:09,224
      This also relates to the breakout video we did a while ago.
      이것은 얼마 전에 우리가 만든 째 나오기 비디오로 이어집니다.

      이번 주의 댓글은 S Jan의 "헤엄칠 줄 알지만 훈련은 처음 시작하는 사람들을 위한 훈련 가이드가 있을까요?"라는 질문입니다.
      34
      00:02:34,562 --> 00:02:36,657
      The answer is yes, but not yet.
      그에 대한 답은 네, 그렇지만 아직 아니오입니다.
      35

      We will come up with training programs for everyone soon.

      기대해주세요.

      Hi! I'm a competitive swimmer and coach for little kids over the summer. Remember to make sure your hips are high and not sinking, you don't want to look like you're sitting in a chair. This helped some of the kids in my group a lot, hopefully this helped you! :)

    • @number6photo
      @number6photo Před 5 lety +1

      I have the same problem, and people telling you your hips are low and not telling you how to correct that, isn't very helpful. Also, kicking furiously will do nothing but tire you out in 25m. Your body is probably not balanced (horizontal) in the water. Your head is probably too high (because you're looking ahead), which brings your chest up as well. Your hips, legs and feet will sink if your head and chest are up. While swimming, keep your gaze aimed straight down at the bottom of the pool, not ahead. Try to submerge your head and push your chest down into the water as you swim. Your hips will come up, and you legs will pop right up to the surface without kicking furiously. To breathe, rotate your body and turn your head (without lifting your head), and you will be able to bring air in through your mouth without sucking in water.

      Wrong you feel that you have no social life. In reality, you have better things to do that you are working at improving your skill levels in. You are, like everyone over 14, as good as you will ever get at getting drunk, gossiping about other people, and argueing politics with people whos opinions dont matter as you will ever get. As for improving the fine details of efficient swim technique, or playing the Cello??? Time invested improving those is not wasted. Stay the course. Those persons that DO matter, respect that...

      Marco Arturo maybe you have poor balance, try to keep your head lower in the water, your legs should float up an you wouldn't need to waste lots of energy on preventing them from sinking.
