i enjoyed this conversation! Thank you for doing this. After 20 years of telemetry/med surg experience, i’m moving to PACU. After watching this, i’m not a lost soul anymore:) It’s a blessing i found you!

I'm considering pursuing an accelerated BSN after raising kids for many years. PACU is appealing as a specialty. Do you have any recommendations for what area of nursing to go into right after school? ER or ICU or ?

PACU is a great specialty! If you know you want to do just PACU, you can always apply for that specialty when you finish nursing school. They tell you not to go right into a specialty, but some hospitals may hire you right out of nursing school. Allie, the nurse who I had for our PACU episode, I think only had a year of nursing under her belt before moving to PACU. The downside of that is that if you ever wanted to do an inpatient position after that like ICU or acute care, then it might be a more difficult transition since all you know is that specialty. But it can be done!
If you’re striking out getting a job in PACU right after nursing school then I would consider jobs in surgical ICU or postoperative/surgical acute care. That’ll give you the specific assessment skills you need to do well in PACU. I hope this helps!! Best of luck to you!

I would recommend ER or ICU prior to PACU. I did 2 years in ICU directly out of nursing school before I became a full time PACU nurse. The reason I say ER or ICU is because things can go south real quick in PACU. You may need to start multiple pressors or reintubate someone or even code someone. It is very important to know those processes and how to titrate. You may not get them often in the PACU so when they do happen it is important to have knowledge of medications and processes and titrations. Like the majority of the people I work with in PACU currently have many combined years of experience in Critical Care (ER/ICU/IMC or Step Down ICU). PACU is critical care.

Do you still need ICU experience ? To go Into ICU or can you do PACU then go into CRNA school

Hey Natasha, it helps to have ICU experience to go into PACU, but they accept nurses from all clinical backgrounds!
