Appreciate the candor. Sad to say, I have had the same experience with the 1.55x and asked myself what I’m missing. Smudginess at the edges over the 1x, and oddly, softness/lack of focus across the entire frame when mounted over the 3x, which has a smaller sensor. While I’ve seen some degradation of the Moment lenses across the board with the 14 pro max vs prior generations, most of it was minor and tolerable depending on use case. After they specifically said this lens was designed to work on 14 series, I am pretty disappointed. There has been some chatter on Reddit that they are reworking their line for the bigger sensors, but I’m feeling like it’s time to sell the moment kit (I have 6 lenses of theirs) and go lensultra.
OK, that’s interesting, you’re experiencing the same thing so it must be the way they’re designed. I’ve seen some other videos on CZcams that look the same too. But I had heard the same thing from Moment that this new lens was supposed to work with the 14, but it doesn’t - unless you like that out of focus edges vibe. They were my favorite mobile lens brand for a long time, so this was definitely disappointing. I hope they resolve this.
Most lens manufacturers struggled with the iPhone 14 Pro 24mm focal length. It’s why BeastGrip redesigned their lenses. Same for Sandmarc. Moment is held at a higher standard because they’re a leader in mobile lens technology and more prominent. It honestly depends on what you’re looking for. The lens has a lot of character but I can understand when someone wants edge to edge sharpness that just looks like every other lens. Might as well not use conversion lenses altogether if that’s that’s the case.
on what planet would a person want an anamorphic lens with soft edges?! the entire point of that lens is to capture breathtaking aspect ratios that immerse you into the footage, even when viewed on a smartphone.
Yeah, right now Shiftcam and Beastgrip are the best optically, I haven’t used the latest Sandmarc yet, but I’ve heard they’re good. I just thought this new release from Moment would be updated for new the sensors, that’s what I had heard, but it doesn’t appear to be the case.
Thanks for your thorough and honest review. I’m so disappointed with how moment has handled this whole situation. I loved their wide and tele on the iPhone 12 but I haven’t used them since I got my 14 pro max. I’ll probably eventually go to beastgrip.
any reason in particular why you stopped using it? did it cause focusing issues? still on an iphone 12 promax with the wide and tele moment planning an upgrade to the 14 pro max in a few weeks would love to know if there are issues ahead of the move.

I posted a video a few months ago regarding how bad the Moment M Series 1.33x lens was on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. After several attempts contacting Moment, and being ignored I don't see any value in trying anything else they make. And now after seeing this review on the 1.55x, I question if it is just a money grab, as they do not work as advertised. And no, punching in slightly, or fixing in post should not be the option to make these lenses work. They should work straight out of the box.
I’ve got a funny feeling Moment just isn’t into smartphone filmmaking anymore. I see plenty of Moment ads for bags, accessory lenses for bigger cameras, and other manufacturers gear that they are reselling - but precious little new stuff for smartphones. It’s a shame really, the 1.33 gold anamorphic I had to wait four months for delivery on is just ok. Not great, just ok on my iPhone 13 Pro Max.
They can't sell you any more mobile lenses if you own the whole range already, so the long game for them has become upselling their accessories and digital products
They are trash now. I bought the T-Series case and mount and it’s worse than a $7 Amazon case for like 5 times the price and on top of that they could t even fulfill my lens order!
I saw another vid that explains sides blurring is considered a feature rather than a flaw for anamorphic lenses. The rationale is that it helps in subject focus and isolation.
Indeed it is soft and textured, really not good at that price with that sensor quality. I'm starting to think that the sensor and native optic is quite big and so should be the lenses added on top of it. Having a bulky and more expensive lens is what I suspect the manufacturer are trying to avoid. Thanks for sharing, always helpful.

A bit shocked that this is what they're releasing as this was supposed to be the new lenses that would be futureproof. Did Moment get back to you regarding what was going on in the end? EDIT: I noticed your box said M Series and they've since announced that the new series was called T-Series. Was this indeed a new lens?
Do you think you could experiment with an iphone 14 plus or regular iphone 14 along with the moment anamorphic 1.55x m-series? will the soft edges apply on the standard or iphone 14 plus too?
Any opportunity to test the T-Series 1.55? I have one and am sorting out a variety of issues with the lens. Some physical/manufacture problems, the same softness, and a curvature/fisheye effect that they more or less describe as a feature. I understand the Cinema P3 app has the cap to remove the distortion, but on the whole I’m really underwhelmed. Do I just have a bad lens. Or is this intrinsic to the lens?
Which phone are you using? With the 15 series iPhones a lot of lenses are having trouble with edge softness. I have not done a thorough test yet with this lens but I will be in the very near future. However, it definitely has a very distorted look. That’s just the nature of these smartphone anamorphics especially, but traditional anamorphic often has a distorted look as well, which adds character to the look. If it’s too much for you you can fix it somewhat in the app as you mention, or you can remove a lot of it in post production, and another way is to use the iPhone tele and shoot past it.

What’s bothering me is the pronounced curvature - as mentioned, it seems more like what I’d get out of a fisheye. There does seem to be an issue with the bayonet mount, which could be contributing to the issue (if the lens elements are not properly aligned). @onth3hous3 No, there’s no confusion. That’s not what they’re doing per Moment, Beastgrip, ReeFlex, etc. It was and is a problem with all lens makers when the newer generation of larger sensors hit. Everyone had to scramble to create new lenses, thus Moment now has their T-Series lineup for these newer phones. Reeflex has G-Series, Etc. The older Moment M-series do not work properly on anything past the iPhone 13. Feel free to use them of course, but it has nothing to do with perfection - it has to do with lens alignment to get proper focus and avoiding chromatic aberration.

There would be no reason for moment to put any amount of engineering into a lens only for it to have any aberration. If Hollywood would use it why wouldn’t anyone else? I think a little more research in this department will help your point and the video. There’s more than 1 way to skin a cat with or without perfection. If someone chooses beastgrip over moment it’s for an intended purpose. Most people would choose an aberration over a “all around clearer shot” the same could be said for the opposite. I would be more clear with your audience than to say what’s bad/incorrect vs something that may be wanted.
It depends on what you’re shooting, but you can do a lot with just the phone these days, however, you can get better quality results, keeping everything on the main lens. In other words, putting a telephoto or a wide-angle, or an anamorphic on the main 24mm wide lens you’ll get best results.
This trash but they have got stuck with their order and they are trying to get what they can because of investment. They also may work with ones that aren’t 14 pro max. Otherwise this is over priced lomo effect.

I believe now the best are the new shiftcam lenses.. "lensultra", they call.

Yeah all mobile anamorphics have distortion, so if you don’t like that look definitely avoid.

Yeah, Moment has morphed into a B&H style e-commerce site selling all things filmmaking. I hope they don’t forget about mobile. :)

Ha, no. It’s a flaw. Unless you do that in post production. But some people like that look depending on what they’re shooting.

Yeah kind of strange to release this so close to those as it’s brand new too, and doesn’t work well with later phones.
Looks like the anamorphic lens destroyed 2/3 of the picture
If you watch Hollywood level movies you actually see the same thing with the soft edges. It’s more of a style than an issue
Sure but that’s a different animal, it’s an issue here with the different size sensors and camera bumps.

Don’t know. Will be testing them in the near future hopefully.

Are moment lenses still relevant? I feel our smart phones have out grown them....coming soon....anamorphic lens built into smartphones.

Yeah they work fine with older phones, but really the 13 and forward are a no go.
Moment has been hot garbage for awhile. They were great at first and then never got behind keeping up with new phones.
They are definitely due for a lens update!
