The Blessing of Ignorance

  • Dennis is back from Greenland and Julie is in Italy as they discuss the benefits of travel. Travelling broadens your perspective on what a privilege it is to live in the United States. It also makes you realize the general ignorance of Americans, especially when it pertains to communism in eastern Europe. Americans don’t understand communism …like citizens of communist countries don’t understand freedom. Americans have an international reputation of being ignorant, and while the ignorance of communism is bad… the ignorance of evil is worse. Dennis’ mustard analogy applies for tradition and culture, but it doesn’t apply to values and morality. On the upside… the international view of Americans is that we are friendly, open, and trusting. Freedom produces trust… authoritarian states breed distrust. Do you ever consider the miracle of your existence? Americans are lucky that English is spoken around the world.

This episode was such a breath of fresh air. Why? It was obviously filmed before the attempted removal of our former president Trump at the Butler rally. It really was pleasing to have a different but rather interesting topic to listen to. Also, I'm learning Italian and love Italy so that's another bonus. Grazie, Dennis and Julie!😊

Yes, you are right that it was filmed before the assassination attempt. How ironic the episode is called "The Blessing of Ignorance." We will obviously address the Trump events soon.

@@juliehartman Look forward to it. Saw Dennis in a guest spot on Megyn Kelly's podcast last night and his analysis as always was perceptive, cogent, incisive, and accurate. Especially in times of crisis like this, we need to hear the comforting voices of Dennis and Julie.

Julie and Dennis bring out the best in each other. Julie’s fiery curiosity and animated storytelling perfectly compliment Dennis wisdom and knowledge about hydro-Christian tradition.

How fabulous that Dennis took Julie under his intellectual wings, she absorbs his wisdom like a sponge growing so much herself!

Utterly brilliant episode. I've been fortunate in that I've travelled extensively. Not as much as Dennis! But that Julie acknowledges the insight that travel is the best way to appreciate all the human differences with respect and dignity to all the world's inhabitants. My children all travel quite a bit. It opens your mind, educates, and simply be overwhelmed with the magnificence of this planet, and teach us to live in harmony and respect toward others and our wildlife and environment.

For some reason I pictured Julie at a dance in Downton Abbey when you mentioned the ball in Hungary. You know, with the ball gowns and white tie/tuxedos, dimmly lit chandeliers and butlers strategically positioned around the perimeter. How silly, I know. Anyway, thanks for brightening my day.❤

Minute 29:00. This discussion makes me sooooo nostalgic and ready to hit the road again. Dennis is correct about meeting various people along the way as a solo traveler.
I lived in France for two years right after high school (from Utah). Then, after college, I traveled Europe on a two-month Eurail Pass. I arrived in Cannes during the Film Festival; every hotel, youth hostel and back-pack joint was full. I met an Israeli Jewish lady who owned a restaurant. She said to me, "If my son got stuck somewhere without a place to sleep, I would want someone to help him. And, I am sure your mother feels the same." So, she pulled out a portable mattress and let me sleep in her kitchen.
That trip, and my three-week Photographic Expedition to South East Asia, and my Study Abroad trip to the Holy Land, with my history professor dad as tour guide, could provide stories for 10 Dennis and Julie and Kevin podcasts.
Now back to the show. More nostalgia please.

Minute 1:05:00. I was in Hong Kong speaking with two Chinese men, in English. We took a picture together, on a dock with Hong Kong Harbour in the background. When they spoke to each other, they spoke in ... English. One was Mandarine, the other Cantonese.

I remember in the 1970s when they were discussing what the world language was to be & it was a contest between French & English & thankfully they chose English as I do not have the ability to learn languages as I am partially deaf & struggle to even hear the nuances even when constantly repeated. I also was not born with an adventurous spirit & from childhood have had absolutely no desire to visit other countries. By nature I am very timid & with my hearing issues, there was not the slightest desire to venture out in the world especially on my own. I did eventually spend three weeks in England which was a desire I developed as I grew older & wanted to see the country most of my forebears came from, otherwise I enjoy visiting the world via my lounge chair. I must admit though, in the past 10 years I have developed a desire to see Israel but that won't happen due to my age & health, plus I do not believe in vaccinators so I watch several Israelis who video the land of the Bible & so I watch them & have walked around Jerusalem a few times, even on the wall. So I am quite contented with that. Though I think us Aussies know more about the outside world, that is Europe as we had a lot of immigrants to our country in the 1950s & 60s & we got to know them on a personal level so heard many of their stories & we happily accepted their cultures over here & celebrated the foods they brought with them.

Julie there is a New Testament verse that says we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places Ephesians 6:12. It’s not against communism or hamas or even evil people.
