- If you have an Apple Optical Drive (CD/DVD player - Superdrive) - then you might want to use it with your Windows PC as well as your Mac. can you? Yes... yes, you can.
The world may be moving towards streaming services and on-demand video - but many of us still have large collections of CDs and DVDs that we still want to watch. maybe they don't offer them on a service - or maybe we just want to use our own media.

After being gifted a new Windows 11 laptop, I plugged in my Mac Superdrive and .....nothing. I did one search on CZcams and you came up first. Within minutes, my Superdrive came alive on my new laptop. Thanx so much!!!
I am sooo technologically challenged.....wanted to let you know that I've been doing the "happy dance" for 10 minutes because my Apple Superdrive now works on my Windows 11 pc!!!! Thank you so much for the awesome video!!!
@@skullchick8462 happy dance unlocked! And now with CD music!
I was really struggling to connect my Apple Superdrive to my Windows 10 PC, untill I came across your Video. I could accomplish the connection within minutes following your instructions. Thank you so much.
Never in a million years did I ever think I would be installing Mac OS software on a PC. Well, there is a first time for everyone and my SuperDrive now works.
Thanks!
Haha! The things we do to enjoy our hardware. The SuperDrives are so nice - glad it’s now working for you everywhere.
Thanks, I managed to get the super drive working on the PC, I needed it.
This worked so well! No problems at all with the tutorial and install - thank you for your help!
Thank you! I dusted off my old SuperDrive, and got as far as the bootcamp drivers, but I forgot about the installer! Appreciate you making a video for an uncommon scenario.
I’m glad it was useful!
Whenever I get my drive reinstalled - I end up watching old DVD movies! 😀
Just wanted to say this works on WIn 11. Tried it with my old Super Drive on my new PC and it wouldn't acknowledge me putting in a CD or DVD until I did the ODD installation. Thanks for making the vid!
Thank you! This simple 'hack' has breathed new life into my Apple DVD reader/writer, which has been idle for 8 years!
You were wonderful! Very very helpful for a non-tech person like myself. I have a program CD that I needed to install on a new laptop, which has no DVD/DC drive. But I did have an Apple Superdrive. I appreciate your help very much.
That’s excellent! This comment makes me very happy!
Thanks for this. Got my Apple Super Drive up and running on Windows 10 in minutes!
Super useful. I have an old software cd that i need, I would have needed to purchase either an updated version to download or a pc-compatible externale driver without this video
WOW! I actually didn't expect this to work! This saved a ton of money and time for me, thank you so much! I felt so ashamed for having bought an apple product for my windows PC, for it not to work thankfully you helped me here.
Awesome! The drive is very well-built and you’ll be happy you have it - especially now that you can use it on your PC!
Thank you so much that the superdrive now works on my windows 11 notebook!!!😊
Yes, I have over 3,000 CD's and I always back them up on my old desktop. I just ordered a new Samsung Galaxy pro book 2 360 and was looking for something to use for backing up my CDs to my new laptop. This is perfect!
Thanks
1 minute in and you had me at John Zorn. The Circle Maker is one of the best albums of all time!!!!
Cool kid! 😀
dope AF. Thanks
bought my super drive at a second hand store for 1 dollar because it was in the recycle bin. Werks perfectly for my brand new rig.
Thank you!! I was ready to go buy another drive compatible with my pc
Your video was super easy to follow understand and I set it up in minutes! 🙏🏽 thanks!!
Wonderful to hear! I’m so glad it’s working for you.
Thank you for a quick and solid fix! This worked perfectly on my Windows 11 ASUS laptop. Much appreciated!
Awesome! Thankyou Frank. I nearly giving it up then buy a new drive. You saved me.
Thanks for the great tip! - Works like a charm. Wes Montgomery on my old guitar technique CD here we go...
@@houston3113 nice!
Wow! Thank you so much, sir! I'm now able to use my Apple Superdrive with my windows 11 laptop. Your video is super easy to follow. :)
Thank you! I didn't know that this was even possible!
Excellent! My mission is complete! :) Helping people unlock the possible :)
I can’t believe how simple this was 😂 thank you so much for sharing it.
Big Thanks! Windows 11 Home / Legion Pro 7i, I have several versions(on disk) of RealFlight RC flight simulator that I used to run on my old intel based MBP via Boot Camp. But, I purchased a new Apple silicon M2 MBP I also had to invest in a new Windows laptop which of course doesn't have an optical drive... Now I have access to all of the games and music using the superdrive I already owned! 👍👍
Thanks for this helpful tutorial, it works on my Windows 11.
Thank you very much! It works with our very old Apple device! Thanks!
Hi Frank,
Well, thank you so much for that video. I already have a Mac Desktop, with a CD/DVD player. Having just upgraded my laptop to a new Samsung Galaxy Book 3, 2 in 1 laptop, which I love after only a couple of days, of course no CD drives these days.
I wanted to load my home accounts on, initially tried my Apple drive, yes it was recognised as an Apple device, but would not load the disk. So following your excellent short video, it worked perfectly 😊
Many thanks Frank and yes, one more subscriber 👍
Many thanks for this, very easy video to follow and worked instantly (versus searching online for hours trying to avoid websites selling dodgy software to do the same thing!).
Glad it helped!
Worked like a charm on my Panasonic tough pad 👍🏻
Got it working in 3 minutes because of you, life saver!
That’s great! Thank you for taking the time to comment too - it makes it very worthwhile when I know people are benefiting from the content. Have fun! Listen to those CDs and watch those cool DVDs! :)
I watch old shows on a 2004 eMac, 4/3 and CRT is the perfect combo
I was a little foolish sold my Mac glad to see I can use this on my windows PC thanks great video😊
Thank you! I just bought a used one online and I decided to get evertything set-up first! Im hoping that ill be able to burn some turbografx cd back ups with this. Greetings from México!
Saved me ! Thank you so much for posting generously with your knowledge.
Glad I found your video, this helped get my super drive to insert dvds.
Very helpful, and I"m also happy to know that there's someone else out there who listens to Zorn.
I just installed the apple ODD driver, worked well, thanks!
Thanx...ive had this drive for some time and just assumed it was broken..sure enough it works and is way better built then the cheapo LG one i been using
I don't own any apple products but held on to this when I found it because it is built so well
@@vinnyavalanche it’s a beautiful little drive - nicely built for sure. As a bonus, you can sometimes find them very inexpensive used - because people assume they don’t work.
very useful, thanks
Thank you so much Frank!
You’re very welcome- Thanks for watching!
Thanks! John Zorn is cool and also has a great record label Tzadik. Serge and Marc tribute albums included 🎷
Nice! One of the “cool kids” for sure!
Thanks, man. Now I can put all these blank disks to work.
It was straight to the point! Thank you very much from Brazil!
Thanks a lot for this video. I didn't think it would be that easy so I didn't even look it up for a long time. This made it so easy. Brilliant!
Thank you so much for ur video. Is really help me play my CD on window system. Big thanks! 🎉❤
Super useful!!!! Thank so much for the video!! I was about to scrap my superdrive and buy a new drive!!!
i like john zorn... saw him play with lou reed once. that was crazy!!!!
Wow! That is absolutely epic! You are officially an EXTRA cool-kid. I’m officially jealous!
Very useful thank you!
@@vincentroy3804 Awesome - great that it was useful.
This worked. Thanks
Thank you very much Frank.
You’re very welcome! I’m glad it was helpful.
Thank you! You saved my rainy day!
this video was very useful. thumbs up for you! thank you very much. I hope you have a good week-end!
Thank you Frank. It was such a sweet and simple tutorial!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I was about to throw it away because i couldn't use it
That’s excellent! I’m glad you can now use it - they are really quite good drives!
Extreamly useful, thank you, I am connected !
You're a cool old guy, like me. There is supposed to be a version 6 of the driver, but version 5.1.5679 works fine. Make sure you scan it with Windows Defender or any other anti-virus program to avoid a BSOD.
Thank you so much i can now use my exteenal msc cd drive with my windows laptop! 😊
Thanks!
Great video, helped me very quickly.. Thank you
Thanks for your video. My win 11 system can read the superdrive out of the box (without the procedure you describe in your vid) and it can eject disks on right click. It cannot physically injest a disc into the drive. This action works fine when connected to a macbook, but not when connected to windows. I'm wondering if installing the drivers will help with this trickiness. Would you have any tips? Thanks!!
So I went ahead and installed the drivers and hey presto it worked. Thanks again for the video.
Well, that was easy, thank you so much
I like to hear that!
Thank you much for your understandable video. I got it, so thank you again !!!!🤩
Thanks so much, so easy!
thanks a ton :)
Thanks for sharing! Works well for windowz10 🤘
Thank you! Life saver. Worked perfectly. ☺️
thanks for this, im gonna burn some cds with this for my goregrind band eventually
GREAT INFO! I used this info today. Always thought it was funny that in the universe of Space 1999 The Dreamcast was released just four days before the moon broke away. 😅
Haha - it’s always fun to watch older Science Fiction that predicts the “future” - and then live to see that “future”
Thank you so much, it was very helpful for me.
That’s great! I’m glad it helped.
thank you
@@FraserStoodley you’re very welcome
Thanks for the info. CD Drive works great now!
That’s great to hear! Thanks for commenting!
Good job. Thank you!!!
This worked thanks great video
Glad to hear it! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment - much appreciated
I just subscribed for John Zorn 😆 I don't know him but definitely check it out !
What space 1999 omg. I was may be 5, 6 years old I'm 46 omg. I'm from africa ethiopia and i wached it on black and white 😲
It`s working 🙂Thanks mate
i am a cool kid! hahah love the vid man !!
BRILIANT !!! THANKS ALOT ))0
thanks pal
Hi, Unable to insert DVD in my external DVD player after installing drivers mentioned above . Both apple DVD player and iMac are above 5 years old.
Thank you! I have one question left though how do you eject the cd afterwards because I can’t seem to figure it out.
You need to go into Windows Explorer (the file system), right-click, and select eject.
Let me know if that makes sense
@@LearningandTechnology it worked thank you:)
"This one time at Band Camp"......sir, you have become Knighted for your service. These little drives are quite expensive nowdays but are portable, perfecr, and indispensable. Your guidance was correct and I think Windows Media Player just doesn't jibe with the SuperDrive so I followed in your Boot steps and download the VLC.
Sadly, the VLC is not as clear as Windows Media on my laptop, an HP Elite Dragonfly.
I’m glad it was useful! These drives are a little more expensive, but really useful if you use both Macs and PCs. One drive is better than two!
it is worked well thanks :)
me installs this and gets it working, also me proceeds to watch the entirety of Back to the future on my windows computer
If I can get anyone to watch those classics … my work here is worth it!
Hadn’t heard of John Zorn, so, thanks for the recco. My question though is - does the SuperDrive work with Mac Minis. Have you tried this combination by any chance. When I called Apple Support they said it won’t, as the SuperDrives were designed to work with Macs that once used to have optical drives, and the Mac Mini never had one. Thanks in advance for any tips.
It works great with my M1 Mac Mini
That’s an odd thing for them to say.
@@LearningandTechnology I can’t believe this. I wasted one hour on the phone with those clowns, even their so called senior people, argued that they had to be wrong it’s the same machine etc. You didn’t even have any set up issues, or anything? How is the install process. Is there one at all. (Btw thanks much for the reply.). P.S. Most of the shops and employees here didn’t even know of the existence of this drive. I am in India.
@@accentontheoff I literally just plugged it in.
I even just re-tested it and it’s working great
@@LearningandTechnology Great thanks. You’ve possibly saved my life. I have 400 CDs that I need to extract 😃 although I suspect many of them are spoilt. Also i suspect that many other Optical drive brands work with Apple but this seemed like a good choice. Subscribed.
Gerry Anderson fan too :-)
You are also a "cool kid" :) This is a great example of content that is difficult to find streaming (at least on the streaming services I subscribe to).
Would you mind sharing how you eject the disc from the drive?
Also, Is there any way to uninstall this drive after you no longer need it??
To eject - just go to File Explorer in Windows, right-click on the DVD drive, select EJECT.
You can uninstall the drivers if you no longer need them.
@@LearningandTechnologyeven though you uploaded this a year ago you’re still so quick on responses!
Thank you so much :) Very helpful
@@DecentYam I'm a pretty small channel :) - so I see comments when I'm writing or in my CZcams studio. I try hard to answer as many as I can!
Thank you very much for watching!
@@LearningandTechnologyI’m sorry! One more question.
After installing the drive as shown, am I able to delete all of those files downloaded from BootCamp?
@@DecentYam yes - you can delete them
Nice 👍 thank you
No problem 👍 - it's fun to watch all those old DVDs :)
Hell yeah
Great stuff, thx! ❤️
how do u eject the dvd ?
If you go into File Explorer - then the DVD/Cd drive is there. Right-click and select “eject”
thanks!
Where do you get the files? I need a link. They have old OS drivers at the apple site
They aren’t updating them - the old drivers will work
I tried your technique and everything seemed to be going really well, up to the installer and all, but when I completed all the steps and put a dvd into my player, it just spits it back out after a few seconds. What could be the issue?
That may be the DVD itself - can you try another DVD or CD?
can superdrive be detected in bios as bootable device ?
It needs the drivers to be recognized so it’s not seen until those drivers are loaded. Even if you set BIOS to boot from USB it wouldn’t accept any media - so there wouldn’t be a way to insert a CD
I wonder if it can read blueray CDs or larger form CDs
No - it's a pretty old device and is really just a handy thing you can do if you have one and don't want to throw it away, but use it for light work.
@@LearningandTechnology ahh. I just received one for free so I was curious. Good to know it can do DVDs and CDs. I think I'm gonna grab some highest capacity DVDs and load them up.
I think I’m doing something wrong. I downloaded boot camp and followed all instructions but my dvd drive still isn’t accepting my disk! When I double click where it says DVD RW Drive (D:) it just starts loading something and says please insert disk and has the spiny wheel of death, and stayed that way for like 20 mins. 😔 I noticed yours said (E:) and mine says (D:) and idk what that means
Nvm lol I went back and redid all the steps and I must have missed something. It’s working now!!
After some uses the SuperDrive now ejects disks on it's own, do you know any way to fix this?
I’ve never encountered that - I would try two things:
1) make sure the eject key isn’t pressed or stuck
2) try different disks - if it can’t play/recognize the disk it will reject it.
If possivle could you reccomend me ways to clean the laser inside of the superdrive. I;m guessing it's the laser that needs cleaning since I have brand new disks that eject by themselves.@@LearningandTechnology
Video begins at 2:25
True - but then you’d miss the part about Space 1999 and the “cool kids” part too 😀
Hi, tried this today and it all was going well until I got to the "AppleODDInstaler64", every time i tried downloading it would tell me that it didn't work, not sure why this is happening, is there something I am doing wrong?
Did the download fail? Or, does it download and give you the error when you try to install it?
If it’s the install - try “right-clicking” it and “run as Administrator”
