The world's most feared wave was in a friendly mood for this year's Tahitian Pro, and a team of local legends gave us an intimate look behind the scenes in their French Polynesian paradise.
In case surfing at Teahupo'o isn't intimidating enough, once the Championship Tour hits Tahiti the race for the world title heats up and the stakes are raised in the crucial battle for re-qualification. This year the Tahitian village failed to deliver on the wave front but competition was no less fierce than ever.
Staying with local host Tahurai Henry, our team met the past, present and future stars of Tahitian surfing, with everyone from the legendary Drollet brothers to underground beasts like Tikanui Smith and Matehau Tetopata and young guns such as 15-year-old Eimeo Czermak all scoring big in the swell that preceded the event.
Throw some incredible still frames from ace local lensman, Domenic Mosqueira, into the mix and you'll have to agree this is a pretty complete study of the way things play out in Tahiti.

Interesting, you would expect someone to go from breaking their back surfing to body boarding, not the opposite. Because surfing requires a lot more use of your back, especially when hoping up on your board. I should know because I've had 3 back surgeries. If your back is messed up, it's hard to do anything. Glad to see he's healed up and enjoying surfing.
Ya but bodyboarding is more like gymnastics at that level and you're taking off and riding different parts of the wave. The problem is surfers don't wanna learn or look at it as inferior for some reason. Different skill all together. You're not good at bodyboarding cuz you can surf. Most are terrible. Respect to all who understand the waterman way.

Tahurai is one of them. He's an ex pro bodyboarder who broke his back at teahupoo and decided to go pro at surfing after... Try doing a backflip, Into the flats at 8ft pipe, landing with the lip in ur face, not falling from the impact, turning it around and riding out... But you pop up (like bodyboarders don't dropknee and stand up on their bodyboards all the time, with out skegs) sooo..... Must be inferior cause you got a hurley sticker brah

there are no dangerous sharks in that area afaik. with dangerous i mean sharks that attack people (there's only like 4 shark species that are dangerous). West oz, south africa and the carribbeans are sharky
You learn to ignore but respect where you are. We are not the only creatures in the ocean. Some love to play, some love to prey. Mostly on a accident or curiousity. Respect will always put life in perspective.
