Bought my mx 518 in 2005. Been using it every day since.
I always said that the only way I would replace this mouse would be for another mx 518.
And now logitech answered my prayers.
This mirrors my story exactly. I have also attained and used the Legendary for a couple months. Other than an issue with something on the underside of my example snagging and causing friction (and yes I have kept it thoroughly clean and tried to feel for the exact source and been unsuccessful) and an occasional two stage click feel to the left mouse button, which I may contact support about, it has come to feel just as good as my constant companion of the last 14 years.
Same here friend
For the record the G400 was everything this new mouse is. I think of it more as a G400 with a new sensor, that and the paint is the only change I'm aware of.
Same 'cept I use the G400. I looked around for replacement options just in case but couldn't find anything!
Same here my friend

I still have an MX518.
The case is wearing out, that's the only issue I have with it after 13 years...
It's older than my 4th grade son...
My MX 518 is close to 10 years now, and still works well, it's really a supremely reliable computer mouse. Only issue I have with it is that it's started to emit a low volume high frequency noise lately, probably a capacitor or something that's worn out.
@@hakont.4960 It is probably a capacitor whine
@@rafee9442 Yeah, capacitors don't last forever so that's probably it. It's barely noticeable though and it works well otherwise, so it's no biggie.
Had mine for 14years, only replaced it last year for a Master 2S
Jesus Christ that’s depressingly sweet
I work in a recording studio and edit audio all day. My favorite mice have been the MX510, the MX518 and my now in use G400s. These "classic' Logitech gaming mice were always the best for fast GUI editing
Logic or ProTools? I got the Magic Mouse 2 but I’m always working in Logic what benefits does this pose for a Logic or PT user?
The g400s is such a babe of a mouse !
Man the G400S is such a great mouse, i've had like four of them now
Most definitely. I remember thinking "oh my god they're discontinuing my favourite mouse" and buying 2 extra ones just so I wouldn't need to change my mouse.
@@Sauce.... I've had one, for 5 years of heavy daily use with occasional LAN parties, the thin cable still scares me like everyday.
"with depressions on each side.."
me: *sad mouse noise*
I just bought the G703 wireless, and I'm really enjoying it so far!
Go eat some poop
are you still enjoying it?
Cause mine is all over the place right now with double-clicks and a broken wheel.
I'm using it for about half of year I think.
This thing destroyed Logitech's reputation for me...
@@eshku you must have been very unlucky with your copy. i bought a g403 when it was just released, after a year or so i sold it to my friend, who is still using it as hes main.
@@SilentJoNn well, it doesn't matter anymore , I got new one and realized - big mouse isn't for me anyway , I'll use only small and lightweight ones only from now on.
It feels just so much better ...
@@eshku good for you :)
My first "high end" mouse was the MX Duo as well and I also followed that up with the MX 518. Used it for over 10 years. Such a classic.
I clicked on this video with a MX 518. feelsgoodman
me, an MX510. but still. there's at least something now i can upgrade to :D
My MX518 lasted for at least 10 years. Then the left click finally broke. Never kept a mouse ever that long.
og mx518 crew
I'm still using mine.
Same.
Man, that mouse was so good. I used mine for several years, then boxed it and just recently, when my other mouse broke, unboxed it in a frantic search for a working mouse. Of course the MX 518 still works perfectly, even after all these years.
Always.
The MX518 is my favorite mouse of all time. It was one of my first gaming mice I ever bought and it was all I used for years after.
I still have the Old mx518, and its work perfectly
Me too
I second that.
Me and my wife still use our MX518s, too. They're both 10 years old.
Got mine in 2005. Dropped it on concrete a million times. Still rocking. A lot of stuff is shaking around inside of the mouse, but all is well.
me too !
i would love the G303 comeback with hero sensor.
the g303’s sensor is better than the hero
@@kayra1758 Please explain that opinion. I'm honestly curious as to why you think so.
Wouldn't that just be the g305?
G303 already had the 3360, it's basically just as good as the HERO sensor in terms of performance, just had a worse power consumption, but it's wired so who cares? A wireless G303 wight he HERO sensor would be amazing
@@kayra1758 No it's not, they're basically the exact same in performance, if anything, the HERO is better because it can be used in wireless mice and not take up so much power.
its so wild you guys made a video about this. about less than a month ago i was looking into re-buying one of the old MX 518 mice!
bought this used mouse by a friend for 15 dollars.
Ive used it for 10 years plus now .. always works
Wow that brings back memories!
I still have my original MX518 which I use at work. Best mouse I ever had.
I clicked this video strictly because I am currently still using the Logitech MX 518 from years ago. Still the best mouse I've used. And now I know when this one quits, and I hold a funeral in my back yard for it, that there is something new to replace it.
Now if only there was a keyboard just the same to replace the one I have now...
Same - except I ordered a backup 518 about 8 years ago when one of the buttons on my original got a bit imperfect.
But there's an important distinction, there were at least 2 separate production runs of the 518. It's most obvious on the underside, as the sticker is radically different. The later version has slightly firmer buttons and is a bit heavier. I thought my spare was a counterfeit, but images from Logitech and other sources showed that both were legitimate.
@@chrisedwards3866 mine even stopped working, so I opened it up and replaced the cable which was soldered directly to the board :) still going strong
Awesome. I love your reviews. Keep it up!!
I was on a MX510, MX518, then a G500... loved all of them. I’m now on the G502 Hero and find it quite nice to the older ones. The grip and resting position is slightly different but I think I prefer it. I have all the weights in as I like a heavier mouse.
MX518 and the G400s are some of the best mice ever made, it's good to see Logitech releasing the Legend since I personally know a lot of people who were still sticking with the two prior versions.
My MX518 lasted me damn near a decade, and the G400s was racking up in age, too. Now I got the Legend, I'm hoping to see it last as long as its grandchildren did, since it's still the same exact mouse, just with tiny upgrades
My only gripe with them is that God awful cable. Both my g400 and g400s had their cable break. Luckily replacement cables are super cheap
I had mx510, g5, mx518, g400 all kinds of no names, razers, rocats, microsoft mice, mx518 was overall the best of them for me.
I still have my MX500 & MX518 great mice even though they don't get much use anymore. I just looked up my Newegg account and I purchased my original MX518 10/04/09 for only $39.99 USD.
I never did try the MX518. The first gaming mouse I bought was the Logitech G5. After that it was two deathadders, a ROCCAT Kone[+] and a Logitech G500.
All of them had all sorts of issues, the roccat being the worst.
Now I currently have the G400s and it's been amazing and it's my longest living mouse so far at 6 years on a pc that I use everyday.
The G400s was great. I miss mine.
I learned so much about mice today. Thank you Linus.

I bought my MX 518 in 2007 and have been using it daily ever since.
Just this past weekend it stopped being recognized by my laptop (accidently ran over the cord with a chair wheel.)
Thought I would have to say farewell forever. Instead, welcome back.
Still have mine, used this mouse since Unreal Tournament 2004 clan ladders...Gave me an edge main tanking in WoW, for sure (those extra buttons were for my mount and autorun).
I purchased five, two for me and three for friends and kids.
I'm SO glad you guys did this. I've liked and favorited the video. My friend loves the original MX518 and I'm sure he's excited about this. I linked him this video. Now, can you please get Logitech to update/re-release the G700/G700s? It's the only mouse I like nowadays, with its 4 perfectly-positioned thumb buttons and 3 more index finger buttons for amazing MMO power and comfort.
Cut my teeth play Unreal Tourney "mega Kill" and "Quad damage" Quake III on the ole MX 518. Was the best mouse ever....until now! Ordering..... Now if they could only come back with the Steel Series Merc Stealth.
2020, still rocking my mx518.
Holy moly. I still use my MX 518 ! Glad to see this news, and i think im gonna buy the new one. I was more then once close to buy the original mouse again for 150€ but now i can have it for 60€. Wich is totaly worth it. Best mouse i´ve ever used. Thank you Linus !
TIL the mx518 was supposed to look like a dented helmet. I always thought it looked gross. Like pre ripped jeans.
I always thought they were bullet dents.
You went the whole video not once mentioning the G400, which is effectively "a 518 with no AS and has higher DPI".
Yes!!!!!
The G405 is literally the mouse they sent me when my MX518 died and I asked if they still sold them. Lifetime Customer for that one.
I need higher dpi. Dpi is so important. It's actually the most important detail of a mouse.
@@brett7011
Not really. You'd be surprised at the amount of people that use 400/800 dpi, myself included. The glide and the sensor accuracy is what matters most.
@@brett7011 your reply is so wrong in SO MANY levels
I've had three of these since the late 2000's, absolute beasts. One had a cable issue, one just plain wore out, and I'm still on my last one. Target in the exclusive Red color put them on clearance back in the day, paid $8.
Great video! Well written and very accurate. Thanks!
Viewing the video with the MX518! Using it on my main PC, using a Logitech G9 in my secondary machine! :D
I still use the original MX518. I love that mouse 😍❤️❤️
Me too, repaired the Cable, Gliders and the left mouse button switch, this piece of Equipment will last for a while.
The new version will soon have problems with the switches, caused by the stupid high polling rate
@@herbsl This thing is love ❤️
Same here; I have mine since 2011 and using it daily for gaming.
Mine died after about 6 years of heavy WoW playing (left click switch). Tried two G400s and they died after less than 2 years.
I love the shape so I might give this one another try.
@@bobbytables464 Wow so MX518 is well built
been using the 518 since it came out. repaired them tons of times and have like 4 or them. love them. i bind all the buttons to key presses though. got them for 15 buck on sale from what i remember.
I upgraded to this revised MX518 from a G502 and couldn't be happier. The weight savings helped my aim, a lot. I also love the use of plastic "soft touch" sides, so there isn't any rubber to wear down, like every other mouse does. It makes wiping it down a breeze.
*_“That was more of a bug than a feature.”_*
True for so many tech products.
The optical mice is the only things from Logitech I still get regularly. The MX518 and later versions with similar designs have been my go to.
I bought the original MX518 way back in June 2007 for $40 and it's *still* going strong today (December 2020)! Albeit, the wheel sometimes goes stiff now and one of the sensitivity buttons doesn't consistently register. Still, few things - especially technology - were built to last this long.
Just bought two "Legendary Edition" MX518's from Best Buy for $20 each - one for myself, another will become part of an xmas gift.
Amazing to think that this mouse is now older than most fortnite players.
I had the MX 510 in blue and later on got the MX 518 which still works to this day. Now i have the G502. Never gonna switch to another mouse shape.
I LOVE THIS MY FAV MOUSE IS BACK THANK YOU LOGITECH!!!!
Just the fact that Linus is making a mouse review nowadays shows how EPIC this mouse was!
One of your best back to basics videos. Thanks.
I loved my MX518, it was not only my first gaming mouse but my first optical one too. It served me well for a decade and I only retired it for a G502 because I just wanted more mouse buttons.
The mx518 made me realised how I love big mice. It was such a beast.
I wasn't big... 3.0 was bigger, and wider.
Still using a 518 on my main WS.
With a 510 in the drawer as backup...

Oh hell yes. My 518 died to the notorious cable issue.

I have 2 of the red versions of the MX518. 1 I use everyday and the 2nd is still new in the box in case the other breaks.
Still my favorite mouse to date.
there was no red MX518, that was the MX510.
here is a pic of a lot of MX518's i.redd.it/hky6459lu9u11.png , the only special version I ever saw was a promotional Batman themed mx518.
Still have an original MX 510 and 518. Disassembled multiple times for cleaning. Even soldered new micro switches at some point in time. Both still with the original USB cable. Since I wanted something new, I got a G502 Hero now.
Still running an MX518 on my laptop. I picked it up around 2011 and it still works great. I didn't realize at the time how popular they were, I just picked it up at a local Fredmeyer off the shelf. I was just looking for a decent budget gaming mouse and found it. Never had any problems with it and honestly it fits my hand very nicely. It has been rather difficult to find a new mouse that is as comfortable to use.
Considering the work I do and saving my wrists. Would you all do a video on those mice that are designed to save your wrists?
Watching this with an original G500 laser right in front of me. Don't see myself changing anytime in the next few decades either.
Edit: Reason I love it so much is the location of the sensor, it's directly below the scroll-wheel, between your index and middle finger. So it really feels like pointing, instead of palming-to-your-location.
I hear you on the sensor location, The G500s I am using has the sensor there and it really does help, plus the DPI buttons are on the left side rather than scroll wheel being between them I never accidently adjust my DPI like I did often enough with an MX 518 to appreciate the buttons being moved. Then there's the weights that can be added to make the mouse heavier if you want and more buttons for the thumb.
I picked up my G400 like surely he's not talking about.... That is exactly my mouse with new paint and a new sensor, down to the sensor location, oh they did add one more circular mouse skate around the sensor.
dose it have onboard "memory" so you can save you "dpi" setting ect to the mouse directly....
cuz I hate using "profilers" for input devices... and my G502 lets u write back to the device so one never needs setpoint after the initial setup.
Was using my dads mx 518 from 2007, back when I played club pengruin, until it broke back in 2015, got the new mx 518 and I'm loving it!
I am STILL using my MX518 from 2006. Absolutely love this mouse! I do wish the finish had been left alone. I do like the blacked out indicators vs red and the new log vs old. That soft touch coating is really nice, but after using it for a prolonged period of time it peels and gums up. Hopefully it doesn't do that on the new version. My next upgrade, will likely be this new model maybe, just because I know what to expect.
Me too! Lifelong love :)
Have been here since linus had only under 70 k subs and it's been awesome journey
I recently disassembled and cleaned my old mx518, and it work like a charm while looking nicer than ever.
Instant order. I loved my old 518.
This mouse came out the year I was born but it still looks so damm good. The stiflers mom of gaming mice
I thought that segue was for a squarespace spot :(
luke: build it beautiful.
I bought the MX Duo too, still using the keyboard :D
Every time I clean it it looks brand new still.
I still have my mx518 in use. I've got it about six years ago because my aunt didn't use hers. Got the legendary this week to use a proper mouse with my laptop. Absolutely love this thing.
Now they just need to bring the G9/G9x back, fix the double click issues, and then and only then will I be happy with a Logitech mouse. I'll stick with my Corsair M65 Pro until then. I pulled my G9x apart to install a new cable and switches, but the latch for the ribbon cable has broken. So my favorite mouse of all time just sits, torn apart, in a static bag until I can come up with some genius way to fix it.
THEGHOSTSLAVE See if you can glue a thin piece of plastic to the ribbon cable and just stick it in.

Thanks for this video. I just got mine and it a great mouse. Feels just like my G5, I think I will buy another one...for the future.
I bought the MX518 back in 2005 also and have it till this day on my desk using it right now. I was worried that if something where to happen to it i would not be able to get one again but to my surprise looks like other people and Logitech love this mouse as much as i do an have re released it. I could not be happier that there is a new one but I'm still sticking mine unless it stops working love it too much...
OMG IT RELEASED I WAS WAITING FOR ITS RERELEASE OMG IM GOING TO BUY IT
I started gaming with the MX500 and continued upgrading through 510, 518, G400, 400S, and 5 which were awesome, but I honestly loved the G500/500S the most. I've now had both G502s and they're great too, but I'd for sure switch to a remake of the latter (with new tech).

Same! We are not getting old. Right guys?... Right?
Negative acceleration is for trackpoints, balls, and other non-mouse pointers btw
You may find negative acceleration useful when you need to move your mouse quickly from the edge of the mouse pad to its center during a game. In that scenario most gamers would wish the cursor remain at its original position.
@@ningcheng_shu Nah, that's where you pick up your mouse to avoid cursor movement. For that, you want a short lift-off distance.
A short lift-off distance and a short landing distance are exactly the purpose of the negative acceleration. If set up correctly, the negative acceleration could help greatly in that scenario. Sure, you pick up your mouse to avoid cursor movement, but human hands don't work perfectly as a robot. When you pick up your mouse, and when the mouse lands on the mouse pad again, there will be a sudden jerk of mouse movement registered. Compared with your ordinary mouse move during the game, the jerk of mouse movement in that scenario is much faster and that's the time when the negative acceleration kicks in to help inhibit the resultant cursor move. Every gamer could tell you when you picked up your mouse from the edge of the mouse pad and put it back to the pad's center, bloody hell, the cursor moved, and you had to aim again! Say it again, it's the NEGATIVE acceleration not positive, to shorten what you called "lift-off distance".@@BSEUNHIR
@@BSEUNHIRIf you don't understand or don't agree to what I am saying, that's ok. The best way to sort out the problem, is just turning on "negative acceleration" function of a capable mouse and see the difference during the game. If you are not a gamer, the "negative acceleration" is a complete rubbish and should be turned off, as it may increase the work load of your hand during the daily use of mouse.
@@BSEUNHIRTo clear this out, what positive acceleration does, is when sudden movement of mouse detected, the driver will increase the distance a cursor moves, compared with the situation of no positive acceleration. Negative acceleration is just opposite to the positive acceleration-when sudden movement of mouse detected, the driver will reduce the distance a cursor travels. As not every Logitech mouse is capable of setting up negative acceleration whereas positive acceleration is ubiquitous, with a mouse without the negative acceleration function, the positive acceleration is often simply called “pointer acceleration” or just “acceleration”. Whether or not a mouse is negative-acceleration capable, has nothing to do with the hardware, I think. It just depends on whether the manufacturer bothers to write a suitable driver software for that function. So, if you don't game, you should always turn on the positive acceleration to save your hand. If you are a gamer and have a mouse capable of negative acceleration, you should tinker with setting up the negative acceleration to reduce the unwanted cursor move after you quickly lift your mouse up at the edge of the mouse pad and put it back at the pad's center, during a game. You might like it.
My MX500, at least 16 years old, is still hooked up to my old PC, and despite a couple of missing footpads and some caked lint, still works as well as ever. My one-year-old Razer DeathAdder has a squeaky scroll wheel that sometimes triggers well after I've let it go.
I have my mouse set with a very low movement (negative) setting.
I find it helpful in games were you are placing objects down and want to get it placed exactly right.
The MX518 is my fav mouse of all time, the sides went all gooey though, I was thinking last month I want a new one but I liked the 518 so much.... Problem solved!
Mine got nasty and started peeling off. I ended up taking them apart and peeling/sanding the rubber finish off, good as new after that. Will still prob get the new one on sale as a backup.
Just Use IPA and a lint-free cloth and wipe off that stuff when it starts to perforate! Done! No More Gooey stuff! The Mouse will Be Back to Performance and Comfort! That shape was the best I used! No issues whatsoever! And not HEAVY! That was a Big Plus for Me!

Because it doesn't exist anymore, I had to buy a couple broken ones from ebay to replace worn out parts over the years but it's still going! The most comfortable mouse EVER!

I found that most logitech multiple button mice, game controllers, and flight sticks use the same exact cord and terminal.

Meeeee toooooo
I had MX500 back when it was just released (didn't even have a PC then, just used it for CS in e-cafes), skipped MX518 to G400 and now use G400s. Great news!
7:16 That's so weird. My first decent keyboard and mouse were the Logitech Wireless MX Duo. That is when I first discovered that fantastic mouse shape, which seemed so perfect for gaming.
"With depressions on each side".
Damn, I felt that.
hands down i've had MX 518 and it's till the best mouse ever, if this one doesn't feel the same in the hand i'm gonna be really disappointed
it feels the same, but it's "slightly" lighter. like 3-4 grams less.
@@Traffic-Light G5 was the worst gaming mouse I ever got (from a Mx518), I switched to Steelseries (Xai, then Sensei) and I'm perfectly happy with it. I've never bought any logitech product since.
I loved this mouse! I've been using the Deathadder lately and I also really like it, so I don't think I'm going back, but oh good memories.
Mx510 user here. Very happy with it for the last 14 years. Gonna buy one of these and wait till ol' reliable packs in before using it.
Bought my MX518 in 2009. Still in use in my girlfriend's PC. I wish I could get a MX518 but with the buttons from the G502, I would happy, because I love to have all them buttons at the reach of my fingertips (literally). Oh, and that Logitech would fix the scroll-wheel side buttons! I do, however, miss the mouse acceleration when doing stuff in photoshop. So much easier to do fine movements with it.
I was not aware of the angle snapping. This explains a lot of the issues I had when trying to cut out something in photoshop. And when it felt like I was bad at aiming in fps... Well I am bad, but badderrr. :P)
Also, max DPI settings is amazing for games where you are supposed to move something that is moving slow. I used my max DPI settings in BF Bad Company 2 whenever I drove a tank. At normal sensitivity, it takes ages for the tank to turn its gun (realistic!), but when turning that DPI up to max, you suddenly had a normal FPS-experience - but with a tank gun instead!
Man, BFBC2 and MX518 was my Easter present from my mom back then. Good ol' times. I wrecked everything with that MX518 in every shooter I played, unfortunately, it broke after not even 2 years. Sure gonna try that G MX518 asap.
@@xCrusHxx I am surprised to how you managed to break such a tank-of-a-mouse. :P
I miss Bad Company 2... The time when Battlefield was still fun.
@@Wistbacka Cable broke, lost connection all the time. Didnt think of using a bungee or something selfmade. Could've been repaired for sure.
@@xCrusHxx
I have never used a bungie for anything. Just two years ago, I retired the my old MX510, not because it didn't work, but because the drivers didn't work in a modern system (had to use some third party software to get it working), and since my parents were using that PC, I want as little extra software clutter as possible.
Regarding your earlier comment on you gonna get the MX518 asap. I don't think it is gonna be that special, other than the ergonomics; and for gaming I have now gotten used to a more claw-kind of grip. And for my office work at my job, I want wireless (have a Logitech MX Master) in order to reduce table-cable clutter as much as possible. The new MX518 has the same sensor and precision as other high-end mice, but those will have more functional buttons as well.
But that ergonomy is legendary. Won't deny that.
Just bought it, I had Logitech G5 back in the days and I miss him so much.
When the cord died I got Steelseries Rival 300 - And I hate every bit of it!
It's too long for my palm.
I hope the MX518 will beat or at least be the same as the G5 (Holding fingers)
It is the same?
I love the random sales pitches suddenly in the video :D
I never had the MX518 but I had the office desk counterpart, the MX500 with the solid light gray top. only like 800 DPI but it works well and it's comfortable so I never felt the need to replace it
I'm buying one and putting it next to my still working original maybe they'll mate and make an uber mouse...
Linus praised it!!! huh? That's rare.
Hard not to praise a legendary mouse.
@@TetraSky I used the original like 7 years ago . Every PC at my local internet cafe had this . Amazing mouse , smooth and responsive . To this day I can't find a mouse that I like more . It really is a legend .
I've been using my 518 for a decade. The DPI buttons are a little stiff and the finish is worn down but it still works great. It's hard to find a fault with the product
Gr8 review, is it possible to get a round up of current gaming mice and also an investigation into the "disappearing 650"
The oldie was my first 'high performance' mouse and I've still got the wee beast on my oldest PC. :D
Rocket Jump Ninja:
am i a joke to you?
lol same
This mouse has good specs and is comfortable to just hold, but to game competitively with, it isn't ideal
They should hire him and have him do mouse reviews
@@KingBarney Why not?
His videos target a different audience, both reviews are fine
I got G400 and MX518 since they been released.
Best mouse in the world, they never broke in a decade (MX518)... gaming 4-6h daily more or less.
Buggy ThatShItCray : So true, the mx518 never broke, where as I already finished two g500's in the same amount of years 😠. Luckily my backup mouse is a still factory sealed mx518 from 2007.
@@bloeckmoep At durability nothing beats Logitech mice, razer mice so overrated but they durability sucks ass, the material is cheap asf.
Both look like new... the g400 (2011) rubber, paint, logo are intact.
And In summer (32 C) my hands sweat sometimes.
The MX518 (2009) has only the logo a bit erased, it improved later with g400 and the new ones.
And they were smashed to few times, not intentionally scares / surprised in games.
Wish I get my hands on the MX518 the silver one with bump, but they never on stock (Europe).
I just ordered this 3 days ago. Should arrive by Sunday.
Mine is 15 years old, just cleaned it up after had some trouble with wheel; good as new.
