Lennox was the perfect mix of boxer and brawler. Big and strong, but also technical and smart.
And very determined! Heart of a champion indeed. Just got done watching the Briggs fight.
Wasn't nothing like these fights man. The pre fight commentating. Larry merchant, Jim Lampley, best in the world. These were the best days of boxing in america.

Lennox fought like a machine in this one. Absolutely devastating.
Tommy was just not that good at top level
@@constantine2731I disagree. Tommy beat Foreman in the World Championship title but Tommy did have H.I.V. and still boxed without telling anyone. Tommy's health drastically diminished which affected his speed and endurance.
@@tskraj3190 both are true. Tommy Morrison was a crude slugger with genuine natural talent and power, but he partied too much and never built much on his natural gifts. Then of course the illness that followed.

Lewis is always laying his body weight on his opponent and holding all the time, did it here, with Bruno, with Tyson = no respect
48-3-1 with 42 Knockouts is a hell of a professional career record for any fighter.
Tommy Morrison was a great fighter who had the best left hook in the business. He deserves more respect than he gets. R.I.P. Duke, you are missed. TCB⚡️
What are you talking about???
Smokin Joe Frazier, Henry Cooper, Iron Mike Tyson...all had better left hooks than your boy.
And all 3 losses were to title holders, WBO shure gets more respect these days.
@@kakimuniafu450 Theres more in history of boxing than the big names. I guess he would have knocked you out in 8 seconds.
@@kakimuniafu450 sonny liston, jack dempsey and Cleveland williams had a better left hook imo as well
It is absolutely insane to me that they questioned a fighter's ability after losing ONE fight, being his 1st loss ever in 25 professional bouts up to this point in his career!
25-0 with 23 KOs?!
And you question that guy with that record up until his 1st loss?!
Unbelievable!
What's even more unbelievable are all of the comments that say Lewis sucked, he ducked people, he never fought anyone during their prime etc. These are either people who haven't watched much boxing, or are children who weren't around at the time. Lewis, by far, was the most-gifted, hardest-punching, and most dominant heavyweight of that era. I remember when Lewis fought the giant, top-rated Michael Grant in 2000. Grant looked like the next great big heavyweight at the time, and Lewis destroyed him in the 2nd round. Hopefully the boxing historians give him much more credit than these imbeciles do.
@@itzenormous we all know americans are hypernationalistic, they just can't stand outsiders beating their best boxers specially if they are from the UK like calzaghe or lewis etc..
lewis was a completely different fighter than the man who fought Bruno and Mcall.Steward perfected him Morrison looks like a cruiserweight this fight
It was the time, they were in. Mike Tyson really defined the 90's and after his fall off, people didn't want to see a true boxer like Lennox. He just wasn't impressive because he didn't have that killer instinct but an incredible boxer, especially when you think about the division today.
@@itzenormous he certainly ducked a rematch with Vitali
Damn! Why are all 90's videos so exciting to watch?
It's because they were all fighting each other, constantly trying to move up the feeding chain. The problem we have nowadays is all the rematch clauses have corrupted the mandatory challenger system so the fighters wanting to move up the feeding chain are getting locked out, and the fighters at the top of the chain aren't fighting regularly.
@@ivanjulian2532 hmmm thanks. Nice insight.
Tommy was tough and a great fighter rest in peace champ
What a warrior.
He wasn't man enough to stay away from drugs though. NO sympathy.
I miss exciting heavyweight fights. They just don't happen as often these days.
Lewis fought brilliantly, he totally took away Morrison's one weapon, the left hook, and just went to work on him. This was not Morrison at his best, but it was Lewis near his best. He could have taken Morrison out much earlier, but he fought the smart fight and let the knockout come.
Even Morrison at his best was no match for Lewis...same result quicker knockout.
@@lastdragon820 Oh sure, not even a question, I was trying to compliment Lewis on taking away Morrison's lottery ticket chance of winning this. Morrison was two, maybe even three classes below Lewis at his best, but that's still a really good fighter.
Morrison could have beaten anybody at his peak. He was about a notch below Lewis at his peak. That said Lewis was the best overall fighter of that era, and one of the greatest ever. He is underrated because he was not super exciting to watch. A big guy with a great jab and a good right hand. Tyson fans don't like to acknowledge Lewis. Tommy Morrison was more than a left hook. He had power in both hands, great footwork, and hand speed. His endurance was his weakness, and that was due to his lifestyle. If he had fought Lewis like he fought Foreman, he would have beaten Lewis.
What age is Lewis here ??
@@rhett7716 Lewis was 30 and Morrison was 26
RIP though Tommy, he sure entertained in the ring
He entertained out of it too, himself. Thats why he's dead. No sympathy for addicts.
American indignant towards Lewis in this era and sense, especially within this commentary is an absolute joke. He is the goat and wiped the floor with the lot of them… but because he wasn’t in American heavyweight, they all sooked… man’s still owed the the respect to this day.
He fought some guys later in their life. He didn't fight them in the early/middle 90s when he should have. Plus he got starched in the late 90s when everyone was still young. He avenged his losses though.
Lennox was one of the best hw, and Morrison was just outclassed.
Morrison got lashed all ova off lewis
thank you for this upload bro! Its an interesting one to watch because as we NOW know, Tommy was boxing with HIV in his blood since 1989. With no medication either, letting it run free in his body. Watching his fall from the top, physically and professionally is both sad, and hard to watch, and yet i cant turn away. Tommy is in the ring literally fighting two battles. One against lennox, and one against himself. He would eventually lose both. Very sad.
The number one killer of HIV+ patients is liver failure.
From... the medication.
It's fucked up that he put his opponents at risk due to the risk of cuts and body fluids. At least Magic Johnson had enough respect for his sport to retire.
There is no proof of this. I've read it and heard it too but no proof. Also, no one has ever come forward claiming he infected them. Including g his wives and later girlfriends
The anabolic steroids tommy was taking would have been stopping any wasting
That's debatable though.
Tommy Morrison was fighting on pure heart and guts, he was out distanced, he was out boxed and KD 3 time but still kept going. He is most courageous fighter I have seen. RIP. Duke Morrison.
Absolute warrior and fought with all his heart. But all praise to Lewis, he had practically no trouble against this man.
Tommys own coach said he partied too much and after his win to foreman he just didn't take boxing seriously anymore.. This coupled with the effects of HIV/AIDs is why he couldn't live up to his potential. Same thing with Mike Tyson.
Its almost sickening to hear how Lampley, Merchant, and HBO hated on Lennox Lewis, and Floyd Mayweather through the years. now Floyd is a top 5 ATG p4p fighter, and Lewis is a top 5 ATG heavyweight. And people wonder why HBO boxing is no more

He was right.
Bertos trainer, "be an assisan" 😅
"He is a survivor... peel him up against the wall, roll him over, set him on fire... you just can't kill him". Fateful words about Morrison by Larry Merchant.
but aids did
Morrison is an over-rated boxer. Foreman never gave him much respect in their fight. Foreman was fighting very seriously and cautiously when fighting Moorer cause he knew Moorer was a much stronger opponent. And Foreman almost lost that fight BADLY. Moorer was getting too aggressive and tried to knock Foreman out even in the last round. This is very similar to the match when Pacquiao fought Marquez and got knocked out cold.
" sometimes you have to hit bottom to bounce back " .
If only he knew just how much lower he was about to go.

Lewis's corner man: "Walk straight to him he can't do shit." Daaamn.
I am critical of Tommy as a fighter, while admitting he was exciting to watch at times. I’ve watched a lot of his fights and highlights and during his competitive fights I don’t think I ever saw him enjoying himself, relaxed, in control or even confident. He was always vulnerable, surviving, and you get the sense he was on the verge of getting knocked out. In the Foreman fight and even after Tommy gave Foreman a head thrashing, Foreman was hunting him down until the last second of the 12th round. Foreman ran out of time and at least twice in that last round, Tommy was on the verge of going.
Same with Lennox Lewis. Tommy didn’t want to be in there.
Carl Williams was beating him on points. Tommy tasted a few decent rights and took a knee on the canvas twice in the fifth. This is after Tommy dropped Williams twice. However, he did stop Williams but not in the kind of way one would expect.
With Razor Ruddock. Same thing. Gassed and Ruddock had no fear of Tommy. Instead, while headhunting, he walked into a left hook and was later stopped by an exhausted flurry from Tommy. It’s hard to say a skilled fighter is ever lucky when his number one weapon comes through for him. However, in that one second of his career, I maintain he was lucky that Razor Ruddock had no regard for Tommy at that point in their fight.
Against Mercer, Tommy wanted out of there after Mercer took every missile he had. Tommy knew what was coming. In fact, right before the famous decapitation highlight real, stop it when Tommy’s head is slightly over the ropes before the first big right. Tommy quit at that moment. He gave up and then Mercer finished him off.
The point being is that Tommy didn’t like a fight. He liked to blow people up and get out of there. There were so many times Tommy would drop his hands, turn his back on his opponent, or take a knee to the canvas at the first sign of punishment. He was full of nervous energy and I would even say fear until he exhausted himself to the point of collapse-which was around the sixth round.
Morrison was one of many "good" heavyweights but that's about it.
Well said
You are spot on about the relaxation aspect of boxing which Tommy never quite managed to grasp. He was as you say a very tight fighter and that meant his tank often ran dry very early in fights usually after three or four rounds or so. That and his defense were the main factors which prevented him from reaching a higher level. His stamina was poor that if you watch his fights he becomes a completely different fighter less combinations easier to hit etc etc. His defense too was poor he was always extremely easy to hit and with a bad chin that's a recipe for disaster. I do disagree with you when you question his heart. I think Tommy had toughness he had a broken jaw, broken right hand, cut over his eye against Joe Hipp and kept going and turned that fight around. Against Williams after being knocked down twice he didn't give up he stayed determined and once again pulled it around. Even in this fight he could of easily just not come out of the corner for the sixth round but he pleaded his case saying I have still got my left eye i.e. don't stop it I am still in this. All of those examples show a fighter who persevered when the going got tough he was far from a quitter but was ultimately as you say a good but flawed heavyweight.
@@jakeyb25 asi es era perseverante...
And people say he could’ve beat Tyson if they fought 🤣🤣
K B well, technically Morrison could best Tyson. Of course he could as he was a dangerous and skilled world class fighter. But how many times would they have to fight for Tommy to KO and stop Tyson?
10 times? Does Tommy win one fight out of ten? Better or worse? None would go the distance that is for sure.
Tommy was never the same after Rocky stopped training him
Lol
He fights was always outside the ring in the clubs. With alcohol and drugs...and unprotected enocourse ....
To the Supreme Grandmaster of boxing the late Emmanuel Lewis!
This was a great match to watch
That was a great young man that fought adversity and struggles and desires and losses and came out as a champion in all ways i have the greatest respect.for him and admiration rest in peace till we see you again son
With all due respect to Tommy, it seemed like he was there just for the paycheck.
He just didn't have the passion for it no more and it was obvious.
When it comes to Lennox - he improved a lot since his fight prior to this one; working with Emanuel Steward did wonders for him even in such a short period of time.
What surprised me the most in this fight is the fact that Lewis' left hooks were better than Morrison's (the latter weren't even there that night!).
Drinking and drugs destroy your body. That's why floyd refused to do them and he could still today be a top boxer and hes mid 40s. Tommy also probably had hiv at this time too considering his diagnoses would come like a year later
Dude also had AIDS likely for multiple years at this point, which wasn't helping his cause.
Tommy didn’t even get in range to land the left hook, that jab was powerful

This was when Lewis really started showing signs of greatness. Manny Steward took his raw talent and turned him into a legendary boxer.
Very exciting in the Mercer fight. Blocking those punches with his head. His head was his defense
@@paulj.stavrou4332 Actually he hit Mercer with a lot of good combinations in the first three rounds; most heavyweights at the time would have been staggered and then knocked out from that offense. Mercer just has a chin and the ability to absorb big punches like no other. Tommy's only absolute poor performance came against Micheal Bentt, and that was entirely on Morrison for being wasted from the night before and underestimating his opponent.

The Duke was a hell of a fighter. The Lion was the best of his era, and the last truly great heavyweight.
Lennox Lewis definitely was the "last truly great heavyweight" as you say.
Efficient, precise boxing by Lewis, that jab was deadly.
Lennox is so underrated. He's easily a top 10 heavyweight of all time. And capable of beating any boxer in history. There's not a boxer, dead or alive, that would've had an easy time with Lennox Lewis
Lennox is a problem for anyone.
Think this was a real underrated win for Lewis. Morrison was always dangerous, even when he seemed on the brink of defeat but Lennox just dominated him. Too big, too athletic and too good. That was the end of Tommy as a top fighter.
@kevindlinc Holyfield not smaller than Ali, both 6'3 and holy more muscled. You get away with less skill by having huge height and reach advantage. Holy v Lewis 1 was a robbery by all accounts.
@kevindlinc I thought holy looked steroidal first time I saw him v Tyson. He came out of cruiserweight/ light heavy where he looks natty. I'm just saying close to same height, reach and fight weight.
@@cruiser6260 Holyfield is 6'2" with his shoes on. He looks big because he is so lean. He was at very low body fat, and top heavy, on a narrow frame. He was a small heavyweight.
Morrison was past his prime here. It would have been a very interesting fight earlier in Morrison's career. When Morrison was younger he would have pounded Lennox' liver with left hooks, and worn him down.

Lennox wasn't that good when he was young, but fast forward a few years later he had gained a lot more weight on and became a proper heavyweight beast. R. I. P Tommy Morrison he was no slouch either.
What you are saying is true. But the good thing about Lennox was that even though he was still a work in progress, he was out there fighting. Willing to fight the best out there. And he had Riddick Bowe ducking him. Fighters today want to pad their records with bums, and call themselves the best in the world without fighting the best comepetition.
@Christopher McMillan always wondered this was like 228. Think steward bulked him up a little bit to add power and sacrifice some speed even though he wasnt exactly small for the time. He was quicker for sure but more vulnerable pre steward.

@@teamzawafootball1370 I know, this Smartboy character obviously isn't that smart. if he was, he would know that Lewis fought all of the top heavyweights of that era, and dominated. I don't know how he can say that Lewis fought Tyson past Tyson's prime. First of all, Tyson was always heavily overrated. He never fought anyone but a bunch of has beens and never wases, except a very old Larry Holmes. Michael Spinks was a very small 205 lbs, and was scared to death in '88 when he fought Tyson. Every capable heavyweight that Tyson ever fought, beat him. And, Smartboy also fails to mention that even though Tyson was 35, almost 36, in 2002 when he fought Lewis; Lewis himself was 37 and near retirement. I guess he also missed where Lewis dominated an in-his-prime slugger like David Tua, and destroyed top-rated giant, Michael Grant in 2000. I could list off all of the top heavyweights that Lewis defeated, all in or near their prime, but Smartboy, not knowing much about boxing, probably doesn't know who any of them are, or were.

As a person with an HIV parent, I can see how the stigma and also living with it can affect their whole life, especially when they have self destructive tendencies. A lot of people just mentally fold up and erode. The Meds can also have long term negative outcomes that are still being understood. They do keep the immune system healthy but can also lead to other things. I try to remember Tommy in his younger version. The person he was when he passed was a shell of himself, not just physically but spiritually too. Drugs will do that. I hope he found grace and mercy before he left. RIP Champ!
I really feel for how Morrison's career went. Unfortunately, he listened too much to the wrong people around him, brought into his own White Hype, slid down a razor blade and drowned in an alcohol river.
He did worse than alcohol. I also don't think he bought into his own hype, but he did buy into his power like many punchers do. He wasn't some kind of bum like a lot of those old stereotypical white hopes were. Him and Cooney were better than that. They both had some different, but serious, issues going on. Tommy was exposed to fame very, very early in his life from being such a good amateur. Rather than having people protect him, they let him indulge.

"The Absolute Best Left Hook"
You guys are funny. Tommy sucked! What decent fighter in their prime did he best?
@@sw5401 could say the same for Tyson. Did he suck too?
@@sw5401 he didnt suck but your right this guy is delusional
Wilder, Tyson, tua, ruddock, sanders, foreman, shavers, Liston were all VASTLY superior one punch knockout boxers than Tommy. You don’t know anything about boxing.
Lennox Lewis fought everyone who was around, in the heavyweight division, during the 1990s. And he beat them all too!
Larry Merchant was right-on about Lewis's power too!! He was definitely one of the hardest punchers I ever saw. That right cross put a lot of good fighters to sleep. That right hand even had Riddick Bowe seeing stars in the 1988 Olympics, which is, probably, why Bowe ducked him in 1993. And Lewis's 2 losses, during his prime, to Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman, were both avenged in devastating fashion.
IMO one of the Top 3 or 4 heavyweights of all time ... despite what all of the ignorant naysayers portend.
Bullshit. The McCall ko wasn't devastating at all. Nobody could destroy McCall idiot.
Another question McCall destroyed the glass-chinned Lewis.
Lewis alongside the klitschko bothers is the most boring boxers ever. who fought who. defend and counter is for sure effective . but god how boring .
@Levity Oh dear! You sound like a sad Tyson fan boy. Aren't you going to tell us that Mike Tyson is the greatest heavyweight in historyzzzzz🥱
At last! Somebody giving Lewis his due! Only Muhammed Ali himself could test Lewis. Like Ali, Lewis fought them all, and beat most of them. As for the Tyson fanboys saying Tyson is the best of all time, then how come Lewis beat him up REAL BAD!! Tyson would barely make it onto my top 5.
@@wanderer1955top 5? I’m a Tyson fan and he wouldn’t make it in my top 10. Which means you know absolutely zero about boxing history.
Rest in Peace Mills Lane 🙏🏼
Thank God he wasn’t busted open in the Lennox Lewis fight because if he was and the risk would’ve been substantially higher the Michael Bent fight as well and thank GOD he didn’t fight Tyson because one thing I know for sure Morrison nor Don King would be living in 1996.
OMG the bias against lennox at the start. Jesus
