It's zen. It's not a theory; it's a philosophy of experience based on the assumption that people through socialization forget their own divinity, the result being they feel separate and isolated from the world. The goal is to experience the universe as a baby experiences it: spontaneously and continuously without ego.
"Only thing worse than uncomfortable silence,....small talk" (Lucky. 2017). Big fan of Harry, love all his movies/characters. And I agree with almost all he said here too. He makes sense!.
"I will not cause harm to any vehicle, or the contents thereof; or through inaction, let that vehicle or the contents thereof come to harm" The Repo Code.....Harry Dean, great actor and in this interview he proves to be one of the wisest people you'll ever hear.
God I fucking love this man. So honest, so direct, so simple in all he does. Such a beautiful thing to witness such perennial wisdom, filtered through the conditioned mind of American culture, especially in his work with Lynch this is able to shine through so fully
This interview started off casual but went to some pretty deep places. It was very sweet to hear HDS say "If you talk to Alex, tell him I love him", showing that he held no grudges and still appreciated the people he worked with in the past. An amazing actor and a true American original.
It randomly popped up for me as I was preparing to renew my passport... As a humanist right wind "nihilist" I agree. Everything happens, no matter what. One thing that does worry me though, and that's something where I can vote with my wallet and if everything else fails, my crappy poetry, is the killing of Europe. And don't one dear to tell me everything is fine - it looks muddy. It looks ghetto. It's shit culture. It's mixed race. Social justice warriors become billionaires! Who gives? And fight, do Brexit, whatever... The stink is there and it keeps coming. I pity the next generation of mentally challenged woke under conglomerate brands.
Harry's talk of existential nothingness are such larger than life theories that i'd say perhaps brings comfort to him. Especially in the later years of one's life for many different reasons. Looking at things as pre-destined and so empy sounds like a burial for his own regret. There's always excuses for confusion. Great interview, Harry's a legend and a great philosopher indeed.
Worthy interview despite the interviewers' inability to comprehend where Stanton is at. His use of 'man' at the end was telling. I don't think Stanton fully disputes the concept of 'cause and effect'. Age has the effect of eroding ones' sense of self determination.
Stanton is one of those dude's like Dick Miller, kept mostly in the background with a few starring roles, a true hard working actor who's good at what they do, and yet most can't recall their names when you show them a picture. They know the face, but not the name, or any of their roles. Course, Stanton got a bit more lucky in that regard, had a couple roles people are more likely to know.
O.K.:I-m a south american one what·s in discover of Repo Man movie just today(...) at 4 in cable t.v.;I LOVE that movie .And then I discover the cult about that one Movie. And I love be the one whith that crowd bunch of people .Nice work Harry, wherever you are!
Downtown Lexington got infinitely cooler when it became the final resting place of Harry Dean Stanton. If I ever find myself down that way again, I'll say hello to the winds that carried him down the stream...surrender to it, row your boat. Finest man Kentucky ever gave us next to Dr. Hunter S Thompson.
A Nihilist sage. A guy who embraced the void and smiled at it and carried on regardless. I disagree with him personally that the future is already predetermined. I doubt that that is true. But I can respect how he seems to have arrived at that solution. If you think about it, if the future is recorded, then anxiety is totally irrelevant. What will happen, will happen with or without you. So why worry about it? If life is but a waking dream in an instant before waking; just row that boat gently down the stream. The stream goes without you, or with you. Don't think, just do. And see what the next scene of this movie holds in store...
This interview from 2012 was fascinating to listen to because I just finished watching the movie ‘Lucky’. All the ideas beliefs he brings up here are addressed in this wonderful movie. I think he may have finally accepted that life is more about the love and joy we create than the black fatalistic and ultimately meaninglessness of what he lays out in this interview.
I was a good friend and co worker with his son. Man he left much trauma for him. Was absent till he was 16 years old. Offered no help. Absolutely a piece of shit Dad. Even in later years didn't provide any financial help. I think Harry was a fucked up dude and that brought what we observe as raw and real acting.
It’s interesting that HDS said he never procreated in the interview. I didn’t think he had any offspring. But, it also appeared that he didn’t completely understand the question or maybe he didn’t hear it properly. Does he have just one son, then?
Hey kids, Harry played roles in so many films through the 60's and 70's - Check them out. He always swipes the film, even if just for a few moments. RIP Harry.
Whereas the interviewer asked some bone-headed questions and at times seemed almost antagonistic, i think the interview brought Harry Dean Stanton to a place that perhaps he wouldn't have with another person. Mr. Stanton simply rocks.
A lot o' people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch o' unconnected incidents 'n things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice o' coincidence that lays on top o' everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.
To quote Harry he said everyone sees themselves the way the script was written. Reminds me of " nightmare alley" with Tyrone powers..."Every boy has a dog" " stock reading"
It's uncomfortable and twitchy watching how irritated Stanton is with this annoying interviewer. I'm amazed Stanton didn't say "get the fuck outta my house." Still a good interview.
I love HDS's acting, such great memories, REPO MAN & COOL HAND LUKE are two of my favorites. His philosophy (even tho he says he has no philosophy) is nuts though. Humans have choices, choices have consequences, choices matter.
The truth seems to be that no one knows whether reality is one of libertarian free will, clockwork predetermination, or some version of compatibilism. I understand it's often useful or necessary to "pick one", but it's really annoying to hear people come down on one absolute belief without at least attempting to provide rational justification for it.
Life just is as Harry Dean says in the ancient japanese poem ( written by Basho) : "Silent pond. Little green frog jumps.......Plop! That's all there is.....the elusive obvious. No big deal and of awesome beauty.
Loved (and still do) his work. Would have been nice if the interviewer asked him *how* he "knows" that everything is predestined and that no one can affect the outcome. *That* is the interesting part. Don't care what people believe as much as *why.*
