You should have referred back to the Bob Mortimer vid Arms out front, thumbs either side of the stalk. Twisting equals tears. Pull, I'm going to say east to west. Apply stress equally to top and bottom. Well done. So happy you succeeded.
I tried Jodi's way, as soon as I unfocused the camera I was able to break the apple.😇

I'm exhausted watching this but it was fascinating. Watching someone have a full on breakdown over an apple is not something that I thought I'd be seeing this morning. Congratulations on succeeding.
I had forgotten about breaking apples. I used to do it when I was a teenager 50 years ago. I just got a Gala apple from the kitchen and I can still do it... DON'T DIG YOUR THUMBS IN!😁
The secret is localised downwards pressure with your thumbs while using your wrist and arms in a splitting motion. Jodi's method was pure determination.

That was one of the funniest videos I’ve seen for a long time! 😀. Well done Jodi !! You moving around the Supermarket reminded me of visiting Albertsons in Las Vegas some years ago when I was on vacation with the family. You guys do just the best carrot cake! I find that the hardest part is to get the first crack in the skin. If you already have a tiny rift in the skin it goes much easier, so if you just make a tiny rift with your nail on both sides of the stalk you can do the rest without ripping. Technically it is about just pulling the juicy cells of the apples away from each other, but I think the first rift in the skin can vary from apple to apple. Maybe Bob has some more information about how to get the first crack in the skin, so it can be done without "cheating"?

Next… try a phone book! If you can find one anymore. It’s not quite as difficult as it may seem, so long as you get one with a firm spine. The trick is to *snap* the spine from the side… once it breaks, the rest is (relatively) easy. But not all books will break firmly, some get twisted up and it won’t happen. It can be a workout, depending on how thick the book is. The paper is super thin and tears easily. Work with one about an inch thick. It’s worked about 4/5 times.

Now you have perfected the technique we need you to go back to the store walk up the the apples and start tearing them in half saying "no this ones no good" every time you break one in half.At least you wont have to worry about filming because that will not be why people are looking at you.
