How Your Gut Bacteria Controls Your Mood

  • Your intestines has about 39 trillion microorganisms in it. And yes I said trillion. We call this collection of organisms the microbiome and it consists of mostly bacteria, but also viruses and fungi. Collectively it weighs about 3 pounds which is about the same weight as your brain.
We feed these organisms and they produce chemicals that we need. They send messages to the brain through the vagus nerve.
Several factors determine whether or not your have good vs. bad bacteria:
    Diet
    Medications
    Age
    Sleep
    Activity level

I've been irritable and moody all my life and suffered from depression and anxiety but did not want to go on meds. During the start of the first lockdown, I upped my cooking skills and gave my diet a makeover. Then, I slowly added exercise. I've never felt better in mind, body, and soul. It really is just small lifestyle choices that build the way toward a happier and healthy life.

After a lifetime of vague anxiety and depression, I removed sugar from my diet and eat whole foods, only. This had nothing to do with mood. I'd accepted that this was a fact of life... I was very wrong. It's gone. All gone. Life is good and I'll never go back.

  • @ralfshmartinfinitewaters4278

That makes sense. Ever since I’ve made lifestyle changes incorporating a healthy diet of more vegetables, fruits, probiotics and healthy fats, daily cardio and quality sleep, I noticed significant improvement to my mental health. I’ve been suffering severe resistant treatment depression for over 8 years and nothing helped except for a healthy lifestyle.
10 months later I feel great. My enthusiasm for life is back, I’m more productive at work and feel well rested. As a bonus my IBS symptoms disappeared.

@@onceupon5145 hello there, I did consult a nutritionist to assist me with my dietary approach. She said it all depends on people and how they feel after eating. Some do well on keto, fasting and others prefer plant based. For me personally it’s intermittent fasting and a balanced diet with lots of vegetables and fruit. I ensure good hydration and include protein from quality seafood, eggs, chicken and occasionally beef. I consume probiotic rich food like sauerkraut, kimchi and yoghurt. I drink kombucha after dinner and it’s helped my digestion. I don’t do well with extremes like keto, vegan or high carb-low fat, because it’s too restrictive. To be at my best I need variety of carbs, fat and some animal products in my diet. But everyone’s different and you should find what works for you. You will need to try a variety of approaches and note how you feel. I kept a food journal and wrote down what I ate, and how I felt- for example I noted too much dairy caused me bloating and catarrh, white bread makes me sleepy. It will be a journey where you’ll learn how to best nourish your body and mind. It’s hard work but it will be worth it.

This is very true. I recently lost a bunch of weight. Before that, I was drinking 7-10 diet sodas per day. Not only was I addicted to the aspartame in them, I was literally flooding my gut with candida, a very bad gut bacteria. It significantly changed the shape of my gut and had me in a near constant brain fog. Since cutting out the diet soda and losing 40 pounds, and feeding my gut with green veg every day, I feel so much sharper and am more easily able to remember things... it's a great feeling. Listen to this advice. Eat spinach, arugula and kale every day.

Everyone was anxious at some point. All humans have so kind of insecurities and we are afraid not to live up to other's expections of us, especially people at the top. And depression.. is a lack of power. Because that's what's life about, giving power and getting power. But if you keep giving power and don't get it back, obviously you end up depressed. My recommendation is if you are at the bottom of the hierarchy then don't give people above you the power if they don't give it back, try to climb the ladder or find a job that allows you to be in a position above others and you end up getting power and start respecting yourself again and do the things that are good for you and that's the end of depression... but if you lose the power again, you will fall deep. because the more you have, the more you can lose.

As a clinical microbiologist, this video made me SO HAPPY! Thank you for sharing this information and giving gut bacteria the credit they deserve--you cannot be healthy unless your microbiome is healthy! Remember that your gut bacteria also produce about 95% of your body's serotonin (source: APA). Diet and lifestyle are SO important to keeping your gut flora happy. Don't just feed yourself--feed your microbiome too :)

    • @vvortex2931
      @vvortex2931 Před 2 lety +2

Yeah, but this serotonin is working in the guts, not in the brain though. There are no mechanisms that are able to transport serotonin to the brain, and the relationship is much more complicated. Ofc you would feel better if you start eating better, replenishing deficits. It's not magic and has little to do with "gut microbiome" because science does not even know what the "healthy microbiome" is. Additionally, the individual's microbiota is thought to be in the state of equilibrium, therefore only prolonged changes (months or even years) in lifestyle may somehow influence its composition.
Bottom line, if you're a scientist indeed, you shouldn't sensationalise the information.

When you mentioned the relationship between circadian rhythms and gut bacteria, it was like a missing link clinked into place, and everything I already know about the importance of diet in bipolar disorder and mental health in general, was amplified. Thank you so much for the work that you do.

And none of my drs would give me a newer mood balancer like vraylar. I feel so robbed. Most of my life is gone- all that time spent in the bed, wasted. I can’t even believe it. I feel so cheated.
Thank you so much for your videos Dr Tracey. I get defensive and don’t want to watch them, but now I’m hooked because I want to get well. I’m not going to fool around anymore about exercising and getting my proper sleep hygiene - I’ve been working on the sleep for about two years now - still have revenge bedtime procrastination, but I’ll kick it. At least I can fall asleep if I get into the bed.
Thank you Dr. Tracey and I thank God for you and your videos. I’m going to start all over again and this time, I’m going to make it. I can’t smile about it yet, but I know I will, because I’m going to get my life back. 6 good months out of 59 years is not enough. Thank you 🙏 again ❤

Research supplements like L-glutamine, slippery elm, aloe vera, Colostrum (only if you know you dont have intolerance to dairy). I personally recommend trying a supplement from the brand ancestral supplements. They make supplements from almost every animal organ you can think of and the idea is that consuming animal organs can heal the corresponding organ in your own body.. I take the prostate supplement and it amazes me how fast and noticeably it worked.. for people with crohn's I'd go with the intestines and or the collagen. Your breath is directly related to your mind causing negative thoughts-anxiety-stomach problems. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 10-15 minutes or more. Let thoughts come. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Whenever you are free sit still for a few minutes and observe your breath. Being still reduces negative thoughts. I've been eating clean and less processed since the end of October. So far I've lost 10 lbs on my own without exercise. I'm about to start going on walks once it gets warmer. I literally feel the happiest in my life.

Keto and intermittent fasting are the top two “medications“ that help me to remain stable. I have bipolar 2 and complex PTSD.

@@jlockwood65 I try to fast at least 16 hrs with 8 hr eating window or shorter, with longer fasting times periodically. I do have coffee with some whole cream though. I try to stay under 20 grams of carbs however I do not count the carbs in leafy greens like salad, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and avocados. I do not eat starchy or “colored” vegetables. I only add flavor and/or cook with butter, pork/beef fat, olive oil or avocado oil. I eat a lot of beef, pork, fish and cheese. If you are disappointed no need to count calories. I am not I can still over eat on good food as well, so I count carbs and calories but not at a major deficit, so I don’t get frustrated or hungry. I do allow myself cheat days like holidays and when someone offers to buy my lunch. I do not go out to eat very often since it can be hard to follow keto but it is possible. I also try to maintain a schedule when I eat and when I fast as well as when I go to bed, how long I sleep and when I wake up. Anything else?
