  • I have a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland (WK2) and I started smelling a weird "burnt oil" smell in the cab. Usually I would smell this if I had the heat on. Also if I was driving on the highway and then came off the highway and stopped at a street light I would smell it very strong. The weird thing is that there wasn't any oil drips below the car. I looked all around the engine and couldn't find any oil leaks. I did some research on the Pentastar 3.6L V6, which is what is inside my Jeep, and discovered that it has a common failure point, the oil cooler. When the oil cooler starts to leak, it pools up in the engine and when the engine gets hot can cause a burnt oil smell. I also noticed that my Jeep was burning oil. I was checking the oil level and periodically I was having to add more oil to top it off. Which I've never had to do before. When I looked down in the engine I could finally see that the oil cooler was leaking and was causing my loss of oil as well as the bad smell. I made a video of the step by step instructions of what you have to do to replace the oil cooler. Below is the list of parts and tools that you will need to do this job. This job is labor intensive, but it's not hard. Just a lot of screws to unscrew and some awkward positions you have to contort yourself in order to reach some of them.

Seem like it was just started to leak coz the knock sensor were not flooded that high, is it not the 5 seals oring gaskets just wearing out ? My JGC have 76k miles and considering to replace the spark plugs might as well do the 5 orings,if it leaks then I will definitely buy the aluminum housing cooler, very informative video .

I just changed a oil cooler. Don’t forget to “burp” the system. After I finished it was still running 230 I burped it replaced the antifreeze now I’m at 204-210

Hi. GC 2015 here. Did you drain the coolant and/or the oil before replacing the oil cooler ? How do you "burp" the system ? Thanks for your reply!

Great video! Thank you. Any problems with the sensors it came with? I read it was recommended to the OEM sensors.

    How’s the cooler holding up?

Year and a half and no leak and is holding up great. Glad I swapped it out.

Right now my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee is only worth $ 1600 - according -- NADA book value, no matter how high they say used car prices are. It has over 250,000 miles but the engine runs strong and quiet. It does produce some engine oil smell inside the cabin of the jeep when hot or driven on the road for over 1/2 an hour. The cost for a mechanic to change the cover and or gaskets is over $800 to $800 NOT worth the cost at this time since the vehicle has high mileage and probably won't get no where near $2000 if I sold it today. My idea was to just hit t he manifold with a degreaser every so often which makes the smell go away for almost 2 weeks. If this Jeep didn't have such a good engine I would have gotten rid of it a long time ago.

Gaskets are cheap. It's the labor that makes the job expensive. You should just take a weekend and do the job yourself.

How has this new one been doing I’m getting ready to do the same

4 months in and no leaks. It's been working great so far. Had a valve gasket and PCV valve leak, but that's a different issue.

Hi there I was wondering if you could get back to me on this question but anyway how did the oil cooler effect the performance of your vehicle did it run like a coil pack went out and spit and sputter when it finally went out bc mine never over heated or anything it just started with a slight miss and I realized that there was oil in coolant and had been smelling burnt oil on and off for months I thought it was a blowed head gasket and checked that and it wasn't so at this point I'm thinking oil cooler I'm just not sure since the vehicle just started running like crap

Hey! My Jeep was running fine. No sputtering or performance issues. I started noticing that I was losing oil and coolant. That was my first indication I had a problem. Then I looked down where the oil cooler attaches to the block and I could see oil pooling down there. Once I replaced the oil cooler the oil at the base of the cooler was gone, I'm no longer losing oil or coolant.

Check out 0:57 into the video. You'll see the oil pooled up at the bottom of the cooler. The burnt oil smell hasn't completely gone away. I think I have a bad PCV valve and/or valve gasket leak. I think I've found where it's leaking and that's next on my list to fix. At least now the burnt oil smell isn't coming out of my heat vents and it's really faint and I can only smell it occasionally. And I'm not topping off the oil and coolant every so often.

I’m in the process of changing it on my challenger… how’s it working out for you? Tired of replacing the plastic one every 6 months or so

So far so good, but it's only been a couple of weeks. I'll post again in a few months and let you know if it's still working.

Seems like a bad design, here of them going bad early and often.

Totally agree. While I love my Jeep, I also love working on cars. This engine has several poorly designed parts and this is one of them.
