It must be acknowledged that this wasn't the average drum solo. There was a unique use of independence, subtle, nuance-like creative moments, reserved from animation and theatrics, with the mild inclusion of chops, but clever in its own carved-out direction. Plus the low-pitch-tuning of the drums allowed his eccentric voice to hold the melody intact for the listener--classic jazz elements at work here folks.

Lenny said that he did this when he was extremely sick and also had something going on with his hands.

According to the description in Vic Firth’s video, he had food poisoning, a sprained thumb, and a broken stick to deal with so that was a one-take performance. You can also see that a piece of his hi-hat broke during the video if you look closely.
