Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a video game series and media franchise created by the Japanese developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega. The franchise follows Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who battles the evil Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist. The main Sonic the Hedgehog games are platformers mostly developed by Sonic Team; other games, developed by various studios, include spin-offs in the racing, fighting, party and sports genres. The franchise also incorporates printed media, animations, feature films, and merchandise.
Naka, Ohshima, and Yasuhara developed the first Sonic game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, to provide Sega with a mascot to compete with Nintendo's Mario. Its success helped Sega become one of the leading video game companies during the fourth generation of video game consoles in the early 1990s. Sega Technical Institute developed the next three Sonic games, plus the spin-off Sonic Spinball (1993). A number of Sonic games were also developed for Sega's 8-bit consoles, the Master System and Game Gear. After a hiatus during the unsuccessful Saturn era, the first major 3D Sonic game, Sonic Adventure, was released in 1998 for the Dreamcast. Sega exited the console market and shifted to third-party development in 2001, continuing the series on Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation systems. Takashi Iizuka has been the series' producer since 2010.
While Sonic games often have unique game mechanics and stories, they feature recurring elements such as the ring-based health system, level locales, and fast-paced gameplay. Games typically feature Sonic setting out to stop Eggman's schemes for world domination, and the player navigates levels that include springs, slopes, bottomless pits, and vertical loops. Later games added a large cast of characters; some, such as Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Shadow the Hedgehog, have starred in spin-offs. The franchise has crossed over with other video game franchises in games such as Mario & Sonic, Sega All-Stars, and Super Smash Bros.
Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega's flagship franchise and one of the bestselling video game franchises, selling over 140 million units by 2016 and grossing over $5 billion as of 2014. Series sales and free-to-play mobile game downloads totaled 1.6 billion as of 2023. The Genesis Sonic games have been described as representative of the culture of the 1990s and listed among the greatest of all time. Although later games, notably the 2006 game, received poorer reviews, Sonic is influential in the video game industry and is frequently referenced in popular culture. The franchise is known for its fandom that produces unofficial media, such as fan art and fangames.

Honestly, considering how well they cast Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, I'm willing to give Keanu the benefit of the doubt as Shadow.

Considering Sonic secretly watched a Keanu film with Donut Lord in the first film and mentioned his name, I'd love it if he tells Shadow "you sound a bit like Keanu" and Shadow's just like "Kean-who?"
Keanu Reeves does have experience with playing characters with a tragic back story.

This early on, it's certainly difficult to guess how much of SA2's story will be adapted into the film. But I'd wager it's got a better chance of being more faithful to SA2 than the previous films were to previous games simply because of the more "realistic" setting of SA2.
What's more, I think it's entirely possible we could see the Space Colony ARK despite the fact that the last film didn't feature locations like the Death Egg. Aside from the fact that the Death Egg is an obvious ripoff/homage to the Death Star from Star Wars and couldn't be taken seriously as a threat, having the Death Egg in Sonic 2 and then following it up with the ARK in Sonic 3 would be seen as insanely repetitive.
Therefore, leaving the Death Egg out as a location makes sense if they were planning on adapting SA2's story this entire time. Only time will tell how close it is to the game though.

Same this is another one where I did not care if the current va was'nt hired for the movie the other being Roger Craig Smith. And while I would've tried to get ahold of a previous voice actor or even his prime va, I do not mind a celebrity voice in this case.
Given the types of characters Keanu is known for playing and how big his Hollywood star is, him being cast as Shadow tells me that the filmmakers are taking this very, very seriously. It's Shadow's big-screen debut and they're clearly not messing around if they're gunning for someone as high-profile as Keanu Reeves.
I think this film is going to be something to behold come December.
My only real concern with this 3rd Sonic movie is the potential for it to get bogged down with too many characters and plotlines, especially if they include Amy and Rouge. This could work if they lessen the roles of the human side characters, (Donut Lord, etc.), but if they have to have them be a major focus, I feel Rouge, Amy, or even Tails might have less of a role in this movie if they go that route.
Apparently they filmed during the strikes, so it should be predominantly the characters rather than any humans

Honestly I was hoping for Shadow to be Voiced by Jason Griffin, Robert Pattinson, or Hayden Christensen, Keanu was the Last One of my List, then again I wasn’t hoping for Shadow to be Teased for the Third Movie in the Second Movie so who am I to Judge, my only hope is that they do Justice to the Ultimate Lifeform, plus we need Amy and Rogue in the Film.

Personally i was hoping for John Boyega. He as a deep but still youthful sounding voice that doesn't sound overly tryhard but Keanu isn't a bad alternative. i look forward to seeing what he brings to it

I'm hoping we get Amy and Rouge too, especially Amy. I don't want her replaced again in redeeming Shadow at all. And it's feeling like a "boys only club" RN without Amy too. Plus, if they wanna do Shadow justice for real, they need him to be like Game Shadow where no human can redeem Shadow at all. Only someone specifically NOT human but like Maria can do that. And Amy fits Maria to a T while specifically being NOT human at all. And Amy could have grown up in Japan like Sonic did in America. Both as a parallel to Sonic, and help bring the Sonic series' Japanese side to us in the west. Besides, Amy's very character is full of Japanese tropes, she's a Genki girl full of the eastern kind of love tropes after all. And she could copy Japanese magical girls like Sonic copied western superheroes. Amy was based off Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura after all. So if we can get the west to see how Amy's based off Japanese tropes, I think that could really help her in the Sonic fandom. We got Knuckles done justice, so Amy can be done justice alongside Shadow too.

I hopped on around 06-Unleashed, so I was surprised to hear SA2 Shadow vs 06.
Definitely Jason for me, but that first VA wasn’t a bad choice.
Shadow’s vocal tracks sound like the VA too, similar to most of Sonic’s themes.

The Hayden Christensen rumours were always super weird to me. Those Star Wars movies were like 20 years ago. Where are people digging him up from, that they think he would be A) up for a big movie role in 2024, and B) a recognisable enough name in 2024 to make him a realistic choice?
Sonic fanboys are very picky on who acts what role, even though paramount has proven to be trusted with their choices so far.
Plus, they did mention they want actors who care about doing the role well. Is that guy at all involved in any films that have genres that overlap with this? Animation? Kids? Family? Video games? Keanu has that link, which is what the people responsible for casting clearly wanted

I think the ARK is a true possibility because we do have Alyla Browne as Maria, which means we will see some version of Shadow's backstory in Sonic 3, and Shadow's backstory takes place over 50 years ago when he was living in that space colony with her and Gerald Robotnik. It doesn't bother me that Paramount chose Keanu Reeves, I was hoping that they could manage to bring back David Humphrey, but I do believe that Keanu Reeves is a good choice. I just really hope that Shadow will get justice in Sonic 3 by acting like the emotionally sympathetic antagonist that he was in SA2 instead of being an annoying gun shooting, and swearing edgeloard who can't have any friends! He's been mistaken to be that for too many years, and I 'm fed-up with it, so may the Ultimate Lifeform get justice by being shown hating guns in that movie because one of them was used to kill Maria and use his unique Chaos abilities in battle scenes instead of doing bullet shooting!!!! The G.U.N. military agents should be the characters who will use loaded guns in Sonic 3, NOT Shadow!

I agree with what you said about Knuckles. Despite being shafted in some games with his dialogue reducing him to a meathead with no brains, he’s my favourite character. Of course, with a professional A list actor and real film screenwriters, it was going to be pretty hard to NOT make this the best interpretation of Knuckles, and imo thats exactly what happened. his tone, personality, flaws and strengths were all so well done.

See, the thing with Movie 2 was that it could get away with making major adjustments because those games aren't exactly story focused. Sonic 2 is just stop Eggman just with Tails with you, and Sonic 3 was just stop Eggman with Knuckles against you. Angel Island is a core area, but it doesn't contribute anything really story wise. Same with the Death Egg. We still got the Death Egg Robot.
Maria getting shot would need to happen because that's what fuels his anger. The loss of his family. They don't need to show the bullet flying through her, but the event needs to happen. Rouge also needs to be there to help pull him back, and Amy needs to be there to snap him out of it. There's more overall story importance in SA2. You can get rid of Angel Island, but you can't remove the Ark.
He is correct in that this movie does'nt need to be a 1 to 1 adapation of Sonic Adventure 2, they can even move roles meant for Amy and Rouge onto other charachters so long as it makes sense. Honestly Tails could fill Amy's role of being the one to talk Shadow down and Rouge's when it comes to finding out the background of Shadow and the colony. There's going to be alot of charachters in this movie already plus needing to introduce Shadow into the mix. Not to say this is for sure what will happen and it's very likely they decided to take on that challenge to introduce one or both of those girls movie's already in post production after all.
However Maria's death is not just a throwaway thing but the core reason for why Shadow hates humans so much that he set's the whole plan in motion to wipe them out. The impact of that NEEDS to be left intact and I'm sure the writers and Jeff Fowler will have understood that. The connection between him and Maria matters to his choices as a villian but also explains why he'd switch sides as well.
I'm so glad we didn't get Robert Pattinson.

People getting worried about him not being the right pick need to chill tf out. Knuckles doesn’t sound anything like how he does in games and with the power of pro actors and pro screenwriters, they pulled him off better than any game ever did. Sonics VA isn’t like the current one, and he’s a bit corny at times, but the performance itself is good. Even the new characters they created for this series like Tom and Agent Stone are well-liked.

I believe the film goers are going to make it similar to Scott Pilgrim takes off even though that had similar adaptations, they pacifically wanted to remove expectations. They wanted to go in the opposite direction and with the leak animatic. That I believe is probably real. This is going to be a time travel plot. And I'm gonna leave it at that.

I actually always thought that Hayden was the weakest choice or at least where I'm the most mixed at. His voice is too flat for me too carry Shadow's more broodier and deeper voice even for David's standard. Cause David still manage to pull off the deeper voice. So far, all the performance from Hayden is either too softspoken or too growly but still on the higher registry tone. Essentially made his sound too young. And similar to Keanu Reeves, he's only a popular choice cause of his recent comeback as a Shadow's adjacent role as well with Darth Vader. Robert though, he's definitely my favourite choice cause of his range as an actor and a voice actor. He definitely has the voice inflexion to be able to pull off crazy voices like his performance in Boy and the Heron. But that's not a necessity for Shadow's voice. Keanu is my second choice, cause he's the closest thing to a real life Shadow himself.

I feel the need to point this out that shadow is mentally probably younger then 10. There are two reasons I believe this;
1. shadows growth cycle was probably accelerated as is common with experimentation of this nature. I would be super surprised if it wasn't
2. More importantly he was UNCONSIOUS for those 50 years. Oh sure his body is 50+ but every one seems to forget that his mind isn't!

Saying Keanu Reeves who is basically shadow in real life is a mid choice to play shadow is a form of psychosis. But given that this guy hasn’t seen John Wick I’ll give him a break. But he doesn’t even need to try to voice shadow. I’ll respect this opinion but it’s a bad take none the less.
For me, there's no doubt in my mind that whoever plays Maria in the movie will die 100% now whether its just by just old age or actually being shot
I didn't have any major preference for who should play Shadow, but Keanu and the rumored actors were good picks.
I've heard people say a legacy actor like Jason Griffith should play him, but while I like the legacy actors, I feel like it's just weird to have legacy actors in an adaptation that isn't majorly legacy actors. Colleen being Tails, while a great performance, did feel somewhat distracting to me given she was the only actor to be in both the games and the movie. It'd be like if in the Mario movie, rather than Charles Martinet cameoing as the brothers' dad, he played Luigi while everyone else is new actors.

I need to hear it through paramount if keanu is really going to be shadow. Because I can't picture him has shadow. I just looked up some of the stuff he played in voice acting, the closet I can possiby hear shadow is "Duke" from toy story 4, when he was talking about his back story. I need to see the trailer however, so I'm just giving my speculation

To be honest, the english dub comes second with poor translations/localizations applied, the japanese dub with the subtitles directly translated tell a better less edgy/cringey story for shadow.

As much as I would have loved for Hayden Christensen to be Shadow (kind of bummed he isn’t) but Keanu Reeves is an absolutely perfect choice. He’s going to kill it. He has the voice down to a tee.
I feel Amy's role in the movie could be done by other characters. Specifically Jojo is who I had in mind. However if we are getting more movies I would be happy to see more cast members involved. We need them for future plots anyway

Jojo is a cute character and i loved the fact she is the one giving the shoes to Sonic, being one of the first to welcome him into the family, but i think more than being the human cousin of the trio she doesn't need to be more. I fear they might end up Chris Thorndyke her... And no thanks, he was a thorn in the side whole series and stole many characters roles, Sonic fans already hated the idea of humans stealing characters roles (like people Fear the gun agent played by Kristin Ritter might stole Rouge's role and they are not happy already) and I'd hate if they did the same mistake to Jojo.

Robert patterson or literally any batman actor would've done a great job.
But there's one actor who's been fancasted for the role for a pretty long time ever since shadow appeared in the end credits of sonic 2. The most popular choice for the character. And that's keanu reeves! The reason they went with keanu is because they're not trying to get a voice for shadow that sounds exactly like shadow in the games. You can't expect for movie shadow to sound exactly like previous versions of shadow because this is most likely gonna be a different version of the character. Sonic and knuckles were greatly changed for the movies, from their voices to their personalities. And I've heard some people complain that keanu's voice is too raspy and too deep. But if you ask me, it's just perfect for this version of shadow. I don't think the point was for them to get a voice actor that sounds like previous versions of shadow. That's why keanu is perfect.

I'm happy you also had hayden christensen as a top pick and for a lot of the same reasons. Love how you describe David Humphrey's voice as a "Prepy school boy brat" I 10000% see the vision. When I was describing Humphrey's SA2 performance to a friend I used similar language. "Theater kid who's trying VERY hard to get the lead roll of Hamlet." And hayden christensen from starwars is absolutely got that Shakespeare tragedy wannabe. (In a good way)
Shadow is just a little too theatrical in SA2 to be robert pattinson who has a bit too much "sad boy" energy.
Not the biggest fan of Keanu, definitely my least favorite pick. But the memes will be crazy funny once we get to hear him and make an informed decision on his direction.
I love keanu Reeves dont get me wrong but his voice acting is very flat just has very little real emotion to it. I dont think it'll be bad but I think they could have found someone better.
But Shadow's voice isn't exactly known for having much emotional range. It's usually either a soft-spoken, mildly raspy, brooding monotone or just pure rage. That's right in Keanu's ballpark.

I agree that people might be setting themselves up for disappointment. ARK, Rouge, Amy, Maria getting shot? Chances are NONE of these will be in the movie. And Paramount might be popping themselves in the foot by framing it as the SA:2 movie if that's not what they're delivering.
Why would people call it woke if they add Amy or Rouge into the mix of the cast? If it done well, no one should complain.

I'll be honest, I'm aleady setting my expectations that, whatever we may get Amy or not, she WON'T be the one getting through Shadow.
They need stuff for the human actors to do so I'm already seeing that they may go Sonic X's route and have a human be the one who gives him the speech, and I feel a lot of people won't be ready for that.
when it comes to sonic movie hype, people always forget that whatever idealized ver. of a movie that manifests in their heads HAS to accommodate the human actors's presence besides just Robotnik and Agent Stone
I feel like no one should do the talking to Shadow and instead have a secret final video diary of Maria be the one to redeem Shadow similar to a cutscene from Shadow 2005 before he fights Devil Doom.
