Such a lovely love letter to Quentin Crisp.

Sting's first two solo albums were very much jazz inspired.

That’s Quentin Crisp in the video, the British-born writer, raconteur and actor who found fame at 59 when he published ''The Naked Civil Servant,'' an account of his openly homosexual life in London, and who found happiness when he moved to New York at 72..His life story was turned into a film many many years ago.

OMG I'm so glad you did this one! Sting is an amazing lyricist as well as a brilliant musician and vocalist. This song is about what Quentin Crisp, an openly gay British man who lived in NY. He went through a lot of discrimination and hence the verse "Takes more than combat gear to make a man
Takes more than a license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk but never run". Basically saying that he put up with all the insults with dignity and fought his own battles in his way.
My favourite Sting songs apart from this one are:
Russians, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Spirits in a Material World and Fragile although some of these are by The Police and not just his. If you can watch the videos with subtitles as Sting's lyrics are always so clever; he was an English teacher b4 he became famous.

The person you see walking in the video that looks like an elderly woman is Quentin Crisp. Very interesting character.

Oh this is such a cool song! I always forget how it makes me smile! The start is a soprano sax and stings plucking. The song is about how Quentin always faced discrimination and ridicule for being gay yet he smiled and stood up tall in the face of it all. Much respect and love to him!

For his first couple of albums, he used jazz musicians. The guy on the sax is Branford Marsalis younger brother of Whynton and he's playing the soprano saxophone.

That sound you were wondering about it the plucking of a string instrument. Violin or Chello perhaps. Sting brings his reggae roots from the Police into his newer sound. Shape of my Heart is another classic

As an immigrant living in Canada for almost 14 years, everytime someone asks me “where you’re from”, I want to sing them this chorus . I’m a legal alien.
Yes, it takes more than a licence for a gun.

So the instrument in the beginning of the song is a Soprano Saxophone, it's played exactly like a saxophone but it can reach higher octaves than a regular Alto or Tenor.

  • @dr.winstonoboogie7302

He started out with Police, a reggae-influenced british punk band, and then he moved to this. Now he plays in live shows all over the world, although he is based in Italy.

Another banger from Sting! One of my favourite songs from the 80s. Sting has most of my favourite songs from all of the decades since he started, with and without Police 😂 He has not even a bad song, like Coldplay and Carrie. He is in the excellent category of artists if you ask me. And if you check out his new songs from 2010 till now,you will see he is one of the very few artists who don't fall down as the time goes by,like most of the new artists! He still makes as amazing songs as he did in the old music! You need to react to Shape of my Heart, his best song if you ask me,Desert Rose, one of the best songs of the 2000s,and most of his songs of his 2019 album,it is so original and amazing in general 👌

"I know what every other genre sounds like, but I've never heard this before so it must be from the 50s." 🙄 There were no "genres" before 50s? Do you know all the "genres" around the world? That's something only American would say. How proprietary.
