Such a lovely love letter to Quentin Crisp.
Sting's first two solo albums were very much jazz inspired.
That’s Quentin Crisp in the video, the British-born writer, raconteur and actor who found fame at 59 when he published ''The Naked Civil Servant,'' an account of his openly homosexual life in London, and who found happiness when he moved to New York at 72..His life story was turned into a film many many years ago.
I remember watching it years ago and always remembered it.
@@annesmith2259 oh god we’re old LOL
He was destined to live in NYC and NYC benefitted as well. I wish I could have met him.
Nice trivia.Loved to see Him.
OMG I'm so glad you did this one! Sting is an amazing lyricist as well as a brilliant musician and vocalist. This song is about what Quentin Crisp, an openly gay British man who lived in NY. He went through a lot of discrimination and hence the verse "Takes more than combat gear to make a man
Takes more than a license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk but never run". Basically saying that he put up with all the insults with dignity and fought his own battles in his way.
My favourite Sting songs apart from this one are:
Russians, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Spirits in a Material World and Fragile although some of these are by The Police and not just his. If you can watch the videos with subtitles as Sting's lyrics are always so clever; he was an English teacher b4 he became famous.
The person you see walking in the video that looks like an elderly woman is Quentin Crisp. Very interesting character.
Oh this is such a cool song! I always forget how it makes me smile! The start is a soprano sax and stings plucking. The song is about how Quentin always faced discrimination and ridicule for being gay yet he smiled and stood up tall in the face of it all. Much respect and love to him!
For his first couple of albums, he used jazz musicians. The guy on the sax is Branford Marsalis younger brother of Whynton and he's playing the soprano saxophone.
That sound you were wondering about it the plucking of a string instrument. Violin or Chello perhaps. Sting brings his reggae roots from the Police into his newer sound. Shape of my Heart is another classic
I really enjoy the live version of Englishman In New York when he played a concert in Central Park NY. The Audience reaction and energy is awesome.
Fortress Around Your Heart
Moon Over Bourbon Street
If I Ever Lose My Faith
❤ so much talent! Sting hot as hell then as he is now 🔥
I love this one and also like Message in the Bottle & Every Breath You take (both Police) & Desert Rose. Russian Love Their Children Too is also beautiful. And Sting with Eric Clapton - It´s probably me. And Roxane!
Russians is the name of the song.
I’m from Paris and i’ve heard this music in my english class in middle school, this music brings back such good memories :)) ❤️
Favourite Sting/The Police songs: Every breath you take, Fields of gold (much maligned), When we dance
I saw Sting on his Dream Of The Blue Turtles tour back in October of 1985. He was an Englishman in Atlanta that night haha. But seriously, you should check out that entire album, it is phenomenal, and the concert was too.
Love this song. Love Quentin Crisp. Before his time. A pioneer. Iconic.
Everybody loves Sting!
So many great sing songs (both with Police and when he went solo) to cover."Every Breath you take" is probably my favourite Police track ,and this one my favourite Sting.
As an immigrant living in Canada for almost 14 years, everytime someone asks me “where you’re from”, I want to sing them this chorus . I’m a legal alien.
Yes, it takes more than a licence for a gun.
Be myself, no matter what others say.
So the instrument in the beginning of the song is a Soprano Saxophone, it's played exactly like a saxophone but it can reach higher octaves than a regular Alto or Tenor.
He started out with Police, a reggae-influenced british punk band, and then he moved to this. Now he plays in live shows all over the world, although he is based in Italy.
I’ve always been a big fan of The Police and Sting
Desert Rose, Fields of Gold, Fragile
I still wish The Police had kept going, but this song would have never been part of their catalog, and it's epic.
''Be yourself no matter wath they say'' from the brave and beloved alien Quentin Crisp.
OOK, now:
Shape Of My Heart
Fragile
Fields of Gold
Sting was really something else back then
Intro sounds like a Clarinet and Harp.----- Jazz & Hip Hop are VERY NYC.
so many people didn't identify this original song. but after remake come out they all rush to find original one
Classic! Great voice. Perhaps a little jazzy a little reggae, i think
/Do you know Kate Bush "Wuthering Heights"? maybe you are interested.. .
Bring on the Night, Nothing Like the Sun are absolutely amazing albums.
Another banger from Sting! One of my favourite songs from the 80s. Sting has most of my favourite songs from all of the decades since he started, with and without Police 😂 He has not even a bad song, like Coldplay and Carrie. He is in the excellent category of artists if you ask me. And if you check out his new songs from 2010 till now,you will see he is one of the very few artists who don't fall down as the time goes by,like most of the new artists! He still makes as amazing songs as he did in the old music! You need to react to Shape of my Heart, his best song if you ask me,Desert Rose, one of the best songs of the 2000s,and most of his songs of his 2019 album,it is so original and amazing in general 👌
sounds like Clarinet
Sting and Police I like ,more Sting :Fragile ,They dance Alone ,All this time ,Fortress Around, if you Love somebody,If I ever lose my faith ,they are sooo good songs ¡
This song came out in the 80s and it still sounds timeless.
Jazz, raggae, soft rock.. That’s The Police and Sting- So creative! Go on and review his LIVE!! He sounds so much better. More raspier.. so beautiful
Featuring the great Branford Marsalis on sax
Branford Marsalis, on the 📯
Branford Marsalis in sax is fucking transcendent
That sound is "pizzicato"
String instruments
The Jazz world actually accused Branford Marsalis (brother to Wynton) of selling out for recording with a pop artist.
ska jazz
I don't do discord. Too bad. Do you like Ren? he does this song also.

No es Jazz … es Reggae❤️❤️❤️❤️
"I don't know what Jazz sounds like" wow. I have seen a ton of reaction videos from people who were clueless about artists and their songs, but this comment tops them all.
silly comment :)
Sting - Russians.
"I know what every other genre sounds like, but I've never heard this before so it must be from the 50s." 🙄 There were no "genres" before 50s? Do you know all the "genres" around the world? That's something only American would say. How proprietary.
JAZZ…..smh
