That guy who runs a family hotel makes USD$4000-5000 a month! He said he used to grow vegetables and it only brought him about USD$1200-1400 a month. Still pretty good locally.
A correction, the guy said he used to grow vegetables to make $1,400/year, not a month. The family hotel does make him $4,000 a month, that is a huge leap on income for him.

Thanks, Raz. This is the Xinjiang I saw when I was traveling there in Sep 2019. I am baffled by what I read from western media about Xinjiang; "Genocide, ethnic cleaning, slave labor, and even apartheid". These are crimes committed to Jews by Nazi Germany. It takes a lot of chutzpah for the west media to apply the terms on Xinjiang.
I love china too! I'm amazed by its rich heritage, landscape, culture, etc :) but at the same time I think we can consider the possibility that both BBC and this video/what we experience is true. Just like how visits to Tibet (at least back in a few years ago) and North Korea has to be brought around by an official tour guide, we may only be presented with the glamorous part of Xinjiang/have the opportunity to be in these areas. both what BBC reported and what we see here & your real life experience can be true, I believe they can coexist. no doubt china did well in elevating a part of xinjiang, but it doesn't mean elsewhere where it's not film, the not so good situations doesnt exist. hopefully, China's programme in Xinjiang turns out well at the end of the day, wishing them the best

In our culture we need to sacrifice ourselves to inhance the whole groups‘ future. Beyond being a Han or a Hui，we are Chinese first，we are brothers and sisters，so such kind of policy can be followed over 30 years. We are another civilation. Don‘t imagine us in the westerners’ way. If the U.S. did something bad to their people，doesn‘t mean we Chinese will do it. And after Xinjiang Cotton issue happened，the fly tickets from shanghai to xinjiang are almostly sold out…… Lots of my friend are planning to go to xinjiang for holidays to support the local community‘s small tourism business in Xinjiang，including myself. Boycott will harm xinjiang people’s living. But we Chinese will unite together to solve this problem.

Officially, when one child policy was in effect...
1. Urban Han could only have one child
2. Urban minority can have 2 children
3. Rural Han could have 2 children
4. Rural minority can have 3 children
However, birth control on minority, especially in Xinjiang, is loosely enforced and likewise the central closed an blind eye to it while only actively censored any big family photos on the china internet thus one can find families having more than what legally allowed. It doesn't mean is legal though, it just isn't enforced, much like how conscriptions isn't totally enforced.
Since 2015, the one child policy has shifted to two-children policy and by 2017, it become a universal policy which means minorities have to follow it therefore there won't be anymore minority privileges.

Minorities can have as many as they want is acquiescent. And minorities in China still have lots of privileges as lower test score needed in Xinjiang，Tibet province when you wants to apply for college inside China. And every minority can have a score added to their test score just because they are minorities. And may other privileges. If a han and an minority get married in China，when they choose race for their child they will choose to write minorty most of the time. As my sister （my mother‘s sister’s daughter）married a minority，she chose to sign her son as minority. Consctriptions in China is performed as every male adult need to fill out an registration form when he is 18 and say if i want to be a sodier or not. If you want，you will need to pass lots of tests and compete with others. We only have 2 million sodiers，and only a part of them are new sodiers. But from 1985 to 1999 China have over 19 million new borns each year. And China doesn't bomb other countries that the sodiers are mostly quite safe. So it is not needed to force any body to be a sodier.

In recent years it has become home to over 1,200 penal camps―modern-day gulags that are estimated to house three million members of the Kazakh and Uyghur minorities. Imprisoned solely due to their ethnicity, inmates are subjected to relentless punishment and torture, including being beaten, raped, and used as subjects for medical experiments. The camps represent the greatest systematic incarceration of an entire people since the Third Reich.
