I think the theme is one of the best! For me, this has the best production values of all the Connery Bond films. This isn't the best Bond film but I think it's up there among the best and its probably my personal favourite. You Only Live Twice would be my Desert Island Bond DVD!
Excellent review guys. As a Fleming purist myself, I couldn't agree more with practically everything you said. I have a soft spot for Pleasance's Blofeld, even though he is a bit of an anti-climax and very unlike Fleming's character. I'm sure you're both aware that he was a last-minute change in casting, after they shot some scenes with their original choice, whom they decided, farcically resembled Santa Claus.
Good review but I can't agree with any of it! The plot is completely implausible but I think the filmmaking is good enough to allow viewers to forget that. Other films like Die Another Day have ridiculous plots but that film just isn't good enough to get away with it. I didn't think Connery looked bored in this, I thought that became apparent in Diamonds Are Forever. I thought Pleasence was an excellent Blofeld, very creepy and sinister.
