- The 50th Eurovision Song Contest took place on 21st May 2005 in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. 24 countries participated in the Grand Final.
Many happy returns
The 2005 contest was seen by many as an open competition with fans and pundits divided over which country would win.
The 2005 contest saw many previous participants return to the stage. Helena Paparizou, who represented Greece as part of the group Antique, returned to the contest with the song My Number One. Chiara, who finished third for Malta in 1998, returned to the contest as did Constantinos Christoforou who represented Cyprus in 1996 and in 2002 as part of the group One. Annabel Conde, who represented Spain in 1995 was a backing singer for Andorra and Selma who finished second for Iceland in 1999, failed to qualify from the Semi-Final with her song If I Had Your Love.

It is imposed as if we do not like the Greeks, but in fact the peoples do not have a problem with each other. When i watched it back then as teenager, i totally loved this performance and especially The Drum Mama. She was so adorable.❤ And Zdob și Zdub are still one of my favourite ESC-Bands of all time, even 17 years later. They rocked Kyiv, Düsseldorf and Turin! And hopefully a 4th time soon.

One of the best years of modern Eurovision. Many memorable, iconic songs: Helena, Vanilla Ninja, Zdob si Zdub, WigWam, Nox. Israel and Croatia also presented good songs. Songs from Ukraine and Latvia hit so different today. Great show and so ethnic. And nearly everybody brought drums.

The year when my country won... I still remember myself and my family screaming in suspense through the whole voting. And when Helena raised the award with her hands, she made a whole nation proud.
Anyway, the Greek victories in both Euro 2004 & Eurovision 2005 are the two biggest memories which defined me as a kid. If these had never happened, I would not be a Eurovision (& football) fan now.

Also she said that they sent an assistant to buy the giant platform shoes in a market in Kiyiv because Shiri saw them and wanted to be as tall as possible, but when the assistant arrived with the shoes they discovered that the shoes were different sizes, and the seller was nowhere to be found since. Being from the UK I voted for - Switzerland :) Sod the UK music I want the best song to win, which was Vanilla Ninja singing 'Cool Vibes'. Still love it today, and the group is amazing. After spotting them here I bought all the albums and am now the big fan. If you want to hear a quality sing search 'Lenna Kuurmaa', she is one of the best singers in the World today.
@@ChrisScott0 I found Vanilla Ninja to be just generic middle of the road pop-rock. Not for me, but i appreciate that you like them and discovered them through the competition. I've found some artists that resonate with the sounds I enjoy and it's a great way of discovering great world music/artists you wouldn't normally get in the UK.
