I'm so lucky that my rent is fixed as it was social housing from when I was a child (Parent's now moved out), I pay £780 (it rises but just with inflation) for a 2 bedroom in London, near a Victoria Line station. Without this I'd be finished fully. They've built flats right next to the station that go for £2k a month for a 2 bed, insane. Buying somewhere in London is going to be near impossible, I feel that doing a buy to let somewhere cheap and just live here still could be the move.
Now with the Elizabeth line, Reading is looking decent as well.

I'm in northwest London. Council tax is £170 per month. Rent £600 per month (social housing), Gas and electric £150 per month, travel £120 (bus only as it's cheaper with the hopper fare). I used to spend £100 per month on snacks like sandwiches and drinks but now I make and take my sandwiches and drinks from home. I don't go out socialising much but when I do it's usually to a karaoke and I can't drink alcohol so I just stick with cola or when finances are really tight cordial.

Move to Luton or surrounding areas, I pay £425 a month on rent (for a decent place) and the train into central takes 20m. Depending on times that costs £11 or £17 with a return ticket. If you did that 5 days a week thats 5x17 = £85 a week x4 = £340 a month at most. Going out here is cheaper, no where near as good as London but my local spoons has a deal on this month for a 99p pint of doombar. Furthermore, I assume you would need to get on less tubes so you would also be saving money there. I will admit I am biased as next year I will need a flatmate and who wouldnt wanna live with the legend himself but honestly mate if nothing else its food for thought.

London is not so expensive if you go for social housing, if you can't do that then I guess you will have to pay alot more. Alot of people's choices make their lives more expensive than they need to be and they convince themselves they need to pay for alot of stuff that they really don't need at all. When I go out and socialise I never do something because the rest of the group are doing it, I always make very individual choices for myself like paying for my own drinks/food. If the group really wants me to try something that I don't want, they sometimes pay (It is not my choice so I think thats fair). I always think about things in terms of whether they are worth the price and If I don't think so then I don't pay it's as simple as that. My essential expenditure is less than £900 per month and non-essential less than £100.

If I was just able to live on 120 pounds for food a month... (:
Living in Munich and definitely one of the more expensive cities, here in Germany the most expensive one. For my last flat I paid 40 Euros per square meter, I am down to 30 Euros now but still too much compared to what you can get for the money elsewhere. Generally, socialising is very expensive here but still kind of worth it, I would say

Well hard to say, most students have less than I do but with driving license (140€ for 90 min) and my Institute I was at least at about 2500€. These costs fall away in September so I guess I could survive in 1500€ but with further subscriptions such ad my gym I would say I might need 1700€ to live kind of comfortable (shopping etc not included). But that definitely is not what most students have, which is why most oft them live in shared flats, have loans or live at home :)
